I always thought they were about equal since each movie usually involves some type of romance between a male and female. However, thinking back, movies do tend to focus on the male perspectives and never the female version of it like in the recent film, That Awkward Moment. The directors could have easily conveyed the perspectives of both genders, but instead they mainly discussed men and how women are a major contributing factor. Also I realized that I tend to watch more movies with females leads like The Hunger Games, The Blind Side and much more. I don’t do that instinctively, but I feel like I can somehow relate more to women’s perspectives of the situations and therefore, it seems more appealing in the previews.
Honestly woman rule the world, if given the opportunity. Media is a one of the greatest molds of our day and age and half of the people in the world are women. So imagine if women ran the bloodstream of media. Pumping in and out new ideas and hopefully even feminist traits in movies, TV shows, and social media. But it sick because that's not what is going on at all. Woman don't even hit the half way mark in lead protagonist and speaking roles. They are seen and used as objects. With the use of objectification towards women in media, women in reality try to mock the same behaviors. Honestly why is there such a big fuss between women and men? Why can't we all just be treated and treat one another equally?
I never realized how many movies had male protagonist or lead roles. It is shocking to see how female protagonists in movie are very rare. Thinking about it, I don't really have a favorite movie that has a female lead in it. The movies mentioned that have female leads, to me, are really good, but it never hit me that there are so little female leads. It's shocking to think that males seem to dominate the film industry and I would think that females would dominate but from the statistics I guess not. I've recently thought a lot about women in film due to Netflix. I watch Netflix a lot and when I'm looking for a good movie to watch, I scroll through all the different genres. Recently, I've started to go directly to the genre labeled "Independent Women Lead" and watched movies from there. I found that within the last month, I am done with almost all the movies in that genre and it's not like I watch movies 24/7. So after that, I started to realize that in movies, women tend not to be the lead. If women were the lead character, then who would the men save? Would men start getting saved in a burning building from the women? But if I think about what's popular, and what's socially "right" in society, I think that women are always pictured to be getting saved. So movie producers, writers, and everyone who helps make a movie, has to think about the public. Will the public pay good money to see a movie where a women actor to plays the lead role and isn't saved by the male?
This current event topic is very unique. It definitely isn't something that I've ever thought about before. However, I do see the point in this argument. Men are very dominant in the Hollywood acting business and are given the best roles and lead roles in almost all movies. Despite this fact, some of my favorite movies star females as the main roles. Being a guy, my favorite movies are mostly action films and so when I see a strong female doing things that most guys wont do it definitely attracts my eyes and peaks my interest. For example, I really enjoy the movie "Wanted" and the movie "Mr. & Mrs. Smith." Both of these movies star Angelina Jolie as a very important character. I think this appeals to many men because of the fact that she is very pretty, but is also very masculine in the things she does. I feel like more and more movies today are developing like this because Hollywood directors realize what type of female characters appeal to the audience. By making movies with females playing girly girls, it may only be appealing towards the female audience, where as a female protagonist that is both pretty and masculine can appeal to both men and women and will help them sell more tickets.
I totally agree. We don't see many female actors with too much dept. I feel like these days, actresses have to have a nice figure, and a beautiful face, not so much award winning acting skills. But I also agree that girls are making a come back. There are still many pivotal female actresses that can do better at leading a role then men. Movies such as the Hunger Games, Frozen, and Gravity, all portray women in a good light. The difference in the amount of women and men protagonists may be due to the popularity of action/adventure movies where a men are more likely to be seen blowing things up, fighting, or killing. There are movies where women are in these types of roles like Tomb Raider with Angelina Jolie Raider, and I find that Tomb Raider is still as enjoyable as Mission Impossible with Tom Cruise. I mean, I mostly watch movies with leading ladies anyway. However, as I read more and started to think about some of the biblockbuster movies, I started to notice he gap. Every movie that is extremely popular or the best movie of the year always has a man as the protagonist. I mostly think is due to to directors appealing to the male gaze. Men want to see men being manly and buff, and women want to see men being sexy and strong... So basically a male dominated movie appeals to everyone, right? This is only half true. Not all men and women are into action and suspense thrillers. But it seems like movie producers don't think that men will enjoy movies only about women's issues. Could this be because they don't like dealing with their wife's issues or girlfriend's feelings and problems in real life? Not all movies featuring women are romantic comedies and this tends to be the general assumption.
Before reading this article, I didn’t notice the off balance ratio of male to female protagonists. It’s crazy to look at the stats and see that there were only three major films that featured female protagonists! The article made me think of my favorite movies (Fight Cub, Titanic, Now You See Me) and shockingly they all feature male protagonists.

I think that movie writers and directors should read this article because it is basically telling them that female protagonists are their tickets to fame. People want to see more women as the center of the story line. But even if movie writers and directors read this article I doubt that they will take any interest of it. Hyper-masculinity occurs mainly in media, and most people are afraid to break away from this notion of male dominance. But I can protest and say that I went to see the Hunger Games not because of the cute guys, but because I wanted to see Katniss kick butt. I think that having the main character as an independent and successful woman can send a powerful and positive message to not only girls, but to everyone.

People want a change from the overdone and cliché male protagonists. The people, including me, want more Katniss Everdeens and Queen Elsas.

To be honest, the fact that only fifteen percent of films contained a female lead. We really still do live in a male dominated society which is filled with inequality. What surprised me, though was the fact that the percentage of films with a female lead had not changed in ten years. This was the most alarming thing for me. The lack of progress in the film industry demonstrates an unwillingness of the people in control to change and adapt to the new standards that the world lives by today.
