First off, I didn't realize that even though these women were participating in sports they still had to wear there head scarves. However, I do understand that it is a part of there culture and religion. Secondly, it disturbed and saddened me to see that these women were forced to forfeit because of there own culture and practices. Although it makes me question the authority of those who made the decision about there forfeit and whether that had anything to do with the decision. I think that people around the world judge to quickly on appearances and various cultures they do not believe in. These women worked just as hard as any other team and are forced to not play for something so simple. Imagine if all the USA players wore crosses around there neck because it was apart of our culture, would they be forced to forfeit as well? It makes no sense to me and continues to disturb me. However, I am glad they are trying to find justice within this situation","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"51810068","dateCreated":"1331926743","smartDate":"Mar 16, 2012","userCreated":{"username":"jolike","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/jolike","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/51810068"},"dateDigested":1532140122,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Jona's Response :p","description":"I thought that this article was very interesting and a tad bit shocking. Shocking to think that FIFA hasn't allowed women to express their culture and religion through soccer on a international stage. I found that it took the FIFA board a long time to allow women the freedom to be liberal in the sense that they are allowed to wear headscarves. However, I do believe that headscarves may play a disadvantage in playing soccer I also believe that it is important for women to show their independence and loyalty to their culture and religion.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"51768104","dateCreated":"1331846052","smartDate":"Mar 15, 2012","userCreated":{"username":"cacaron","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/cacaron","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/51768104"},"dateDigested":1532140123,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Camille's Response :)","description":"This article was interesting to me because I never realized that head scarves were banned. I just figured that they would be difficult to play with so no one did. I think it is smart to finally becoming up with a solution for these women so that they can both play and honor their cultures and religion. As an international organization, it is important for FAFSA to make the effort to include any country willing to participate.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"51768030","dateCreated":"1331845914","smartDate":"Mar 15, 2012","userCreated":{"username":"esarslan","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/esarslan","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/51768030"},"dateDigested":1532140123,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Esma's Response","description":"The article talks about a recent break from the ban on headscarves that FIFA imposed on Muslim women in 2007. The article shows Iranian women rejoicing in a victory over a Syrian women's soccer team. Personally, I find the ban very offensive. And to blame the reason for the ban on safety issues is even worse. You don't have to use a pin or needle when wearing a headscarf. In fact, most women don't. And even for those who do wear a pin, like me, it's not a safety problem. I play sports and I've been wearing a headscarf for years. It has never been a safety issue for me. I think that FIFA is making excuses saying things like religious symbols are banned from uniform. I like to think of the headscarf as an accessory. Would FIFA ask me to remove my cross necklace if I was a Christian? They are creating double standards not only against women, but also against an entire religion. And the most shocking part of it all is that we are talking about sports. Sports is a world where every person should be able to compete on fair grounds. If anything the headscarf is a disadvantage so I don't think FIFA has to worry about Muslim women using the headscarf to gain any sort of upper hand.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"51767600","dateCreated":"1331845204","smartDate":"Mar 15, 2012","userCreated":{"username":"hpup17","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/hpup17","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/51767600"},"dateDigested":1532140123,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Hunter's word","description":"I understand why FIFA was concerned about headscarves and safety pins and I see the reasoning for opposing displaying religious symbols. However, I do not believe that FIFA responded appropriately to this problem. Banning the women all together was simply unfair. The headscarf itself may seem like a religious symbol but it is much deeper than that. I can't imagine how FIFA couldn't understand that. The discrimination was questionable and I think they really crossed the line. I'm glad they found a way to sort it out but the conflict along the way was poorly handled.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"51767410","dateCreated":"1331844937","smartDate":"Mar 15, 2012","userCreated":{"username":"kichock","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/kichock","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/51767410"},"dateDigested":1532140123,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Kamea's Response","description":"It's part of their tradition to wear the scarfs, why ban them from playing sports for simply following their tradition.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"51765456","dateCreated":"1331842155","smartDate":"Mar 15, 2012","userCreated":{"username":"nisteine","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/nisteine","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/51765456"},"dateDigested":1532140123,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Nick's Response","description":"I feel that the issue of permitting Muslim players to wear headscarves during soccer games and in sporting events in general is a difficult issue to address. On the one hand players should be allowed to express their religious beliefs and practices freely; however, it seems these athletes should not be competing while wearing things like the headscarf if it is deter mental to their health. Ultimately I feel that it should be the athlete's choice whether or not to wear the scarf. I think that muslim women should be allowed to wear headscarves while playing soccer. However, I understand the concern. The headscarf is a safety issue because of the safety pin that holds the scarf together. If all the women are required to use velcrow instead that would be a great alternative. I do hope that the muslim community realizes that soccer is a confrontational sport and the velcrow may accidentally come off from bumping into another player. As long as they understand this risk, there is no reason for muslim women to be excluded from playing soccer.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"51739652","dateCreated":"1331804769","smartDate":"Mar 15, 2012","userCreated":{"username":"nickisilva808","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/nickisilva808","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/pic\/1337203052\/nickisilva808-lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/51739652"},"dateDigested":1532140123,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Nicki's Response","description":"This article is so upsetting. First of all, I don't understand why people are making such a big deal about the head scarf. This is honestly the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard, and I just can't believe that something so minute, is getting this much attention, because it shouldn't even be an issue at all. It's not like the people wearing the head scarves are getting some type of advantage. Why can't people just play the sport to play and have friendly competitions? By not allowing Iran to play because they are wearing the head scarf is such a joke. Not only does it cause religious controversy, but just makes the Olympic committee look like idiots. Sports and the Olympics should be about providing an outlet for the whole world to come together to have friendly competitions, but instead, they're bringing up issues that could potentially cause outbursts and political drama. This issue is such a joke. That is all.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"51737394","dateCreated":"1331793214","smartDate":"Mar 14, 2012","userCreated":{"username":"tiareyes","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/tiareyes","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/51737394"},"dateDigested":1532140124,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Tiare's Response","description":"After reading this article, I was glad to know that women from all around the world are slowly gaining more rights.
