Due to the nature of the religion, ideology and state of mind of the people of the middle east, social progress for women is nearly impossible. The fact that honor killings have survived past the bronze age shows that no matter how far the "western" world progresses the middle east will remain barbaric unless an influence from other countries pushes countries such as Egypt towards a more progressive view. Until then, women will continue to suffer, because in a country where men are given absolute power, the women will need outside help to stop horrific acts such as honor killings.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"42944074","dateCreated":"1316672879","smartDate":"Sep 21, 2011","userCreated":{"username":"carinada","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/carinada","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/42944074"},"dateDigested":1532140168,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Current Event Response","description":"This article made me extremely scared and sad for the women who are suffering and being punished and even killed for having an abortion. I don't understand how a human can kill another human to begin with and especially if that human being killed is your sister, daughter, or niece. It is very frightening to know how other women live in other parts of the world. I find the lifestyle of the people in Egypt disgusting because no one should have the right to take the life of another. I'm also confused because if they are so religious, I don't understand why they would find it justifiable to take another persons life when my understanding is that God is the only one who is allowed to make the fate of each person. I also found it disturbing that the women of Egypt are some what "brain washed" to think that it is right for them to die if they have to have an abortion or if they become pregnant before they are allowed to. It scares me to know that women in other parts of the world would want to be thrown in the Nile to hide the "shame" that they brought on their family. This article made me extremely grateful to live in America because such actions are not justifiable.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"42941214","dateCreated":"1316665787","smartDate":"Sep 21, 2011","userCreated":{"username":"Kylietakafuji","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/Kylietakafuji","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/42941214"},"dateDigested":1532140168,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Current Events response","description":"After reading the article I felt disgusted because I couldn't imagine killing someone from your own family. It was weird imagining that family pride and honor was superior to the life of someone you loved. I think that it is morally wrong for the lady having the abortion to be killed because, sometimes the circumstance might not be the right circumstance to have a baby. Even though it may say in their religion that having an abortion is wrong, I think that they need to reassess whether or not they are doing the morally right thing. I believe that it is unfair that the males are not judged as harsh as the women. The women should have as much freedom as the men.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"42915402","dateCreated":"1316639966","smartDate":"Sep 21, 2011","userCreated":{"username":"sacarlil","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/sacarlil","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/42915402"},"dateDigested":1532140169,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Current Event Response","description":"This article was very eye opening for me. I had no idea that women in Egypt could be killed for shaming their family. That is inhumane and unfair for women. I find it hard to fathom that someone could kill their own family member because they have brought some form of disgrace to the family. Also, it isn't fair that only women are being killed for shaming the family, and not men. Men make mistakes as well, and they should be forced to take responsibility for their actions too. Unfortunately, in this case, men are given more power than women and are allowed to control women. That goes against the philosophies that all people are created equal. It is sad that women have had to turn to lying and abortion because their families would kill them if they found out. I hope that these families in Egypt will begin to realize that justice should be applied to all people, not just women; and that people shouldn't be killed because they brought shame to the family.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"42874216","dateCreated":"1316598690","smartDate":"Sep 21, 2011","userCreated":{"username":"saphyre_rezentes","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/saphyre_rezentes","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/42874216"},"dateDigested":1532140169,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Current Event Response","description":"The article was not a shock to me. Many places, especially in places such as the Middle East, focus a lot on religion. Many people live based on their religion, and so it's not a shock for those who are familiar with the culture and life style's of those around the world, not from America. As far as the article goes, I strongly disagree with the Egyptian Parliament. They should have no right to kill a woman because they went through on an abortion. Yes, they themselves may have technically killed a "soon to be" human being, but that does not mean the government can do the same thing. Two wrongs do not make a right. Furthermore, if they do feel like it is "right" to punish or kill the woman then why not the man as well? It takes two to make a baby does it not? One is not more important then the other because both male and female is needed to make a baby. It just comes to show that men do have "more rights". Men have more leeway when it comes to a lot of things. It's just another example of how women, til this day, remain oppressed.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"42873202","dateCreated":"1316595133","smartDate":"Sep 21, 2011","userCreated":{"username":"abjohnsonedwards","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/abjohnsonedwards","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/42873202"},"dateDigested":1532140169,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Current Event Response","description":"The things that I read in the article shocked me. I cannot believe women are getting punished for something created by both sexes. How can a religion put that kind of burden on females when males are the sourced of making the baby? In some cases though, women want to abort their child because they have been raped or because their child was an accident. Depending on the circumstances, i believe women should have the freedom to make their own decisions. I strongly believe that the punishment for getting an abortion is not necessary. Instead of worrying about the loss of an unborn child, they should focus more on the reasons the women get abortions in the first place.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"42872872","dateCreated":"1316593939","smartDate":"Sep 21, 2011","userCreated":{"username":"chbueno","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/chbueno","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/42872872"},"dateDigested":1532140169,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Current Event Response","description":"I think it is always a conflicting decision between following the rules of your religion and survival. The 2010 Egyptian Parliament is a giant step towards giving women more rights as well as giving them the courage to make a decision that involves a life and their own flesh and blood. It is true that honor is something that cannot be taken likely. However the people in Egypt go to extremes to keep that, at the cost of their family\u2019s lives. Killing a pregnant wife who is suspected of abortion is two times worse than going through abortion because you not only kill the child, but you also kill the mother. Of course a religion is a guideline to how one should live their life, yet if you kill all the mothers there soon becomes no people to preach the religion the extremists tried so desperately to follow.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"42872836","dateCreated":"1316593852","smartDate":"Sep 21, 2011","userCreated":{"username":"mieminami","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/mieminami","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/42872836"},"dateDigested":1532140169,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Current Events Response","description":"Although I know life and laws in Egypt are a lot harsher, this article surprised me. I thought it was harsh that families would put their family's reputation before their daughters. Here we see the horrible effect of rumors, but on a larger more serious scale. I feel this is ridiculous and in no way should be okay in Egypt. While I do feel abortion can be bad I still feel that every women should have the choice of keeping a baby or getting an abortion. Being a mother is not something that every girl is just ready for. In foreign countries many times women do not want to keep a child from a rape because it would bring a huge shame to them and their families. Making it illegal takes away a women's rights and control of her body. Also, men are also responsible for the pregnancy so they should also be punished if women were to be. A man should not be superior in this situation because they both had to make the baby. It only gets harder when you bring the topic out of the country, where many different factors could affect the decisions that are being made.
\nThe horrifying case of the girl being murdered as a result of a mere rumor is, albeit extreme, an example of the unfair treatment that women are subject to. The strong belief of family honor causes such horrifying acts in hopes to preserve that honor.
\nStories like Amira's where she is able to escape provide the insight that we need to help aid and prevent these heinous acts.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]}],"more":true},"comments":[]},"http":{"code":200,"status":"OK"},"redirectUrl":null,"javascript":null,"notices":{"warning":[],"error":[],"info":[],"success":[]}}
