As she was going through her slide show I started to become more and more appalled at the fact that this is happening everyday in Hawaii. I knew that human trafficking happened, but I wasn't aware of the number of trafficked sex slaves. The thought of trafficking really makes me sick. I can't even wrap my mind around the fact that there are disgusting 50 something year old men that rape 13 year old girls. I know it's not all men, but the few make it harder for girls to trust men. I think that since I'm more aware of the signs of sex trafficking I might be too untrusting. It's awful to think that in the UK there are so many sex slaves being brought into the country. I agree with what Mrs. Falk said that these people who are educating others are actually really brave. Hearing about all of this is really inspiring and makes me want to help in any way possible.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"65415444","dateCreated":"1386893390","smartDate":"Dec 12, 2013","userCreated":{"username":"Kleein","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/Kleein","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/65415444"},"dateDigested":1532140198,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Human Trafficking ","description":"SEX TRAFFICKING IS A HUDGE PROBLEM THAT NEEDS TO BE STOPPED! This isn't the first time I heard about brothels and sex-trafficking, the first time was in my Econ & Entre. class. When I first learned about this, my heart dropped. Some victims claimed that they would take up to 40 'clients' a day. My hearts drops at these types of topics because our lives could be entirely different if we did not attend Iolani or if we lived in a third world country. I do not believe that anything is being done right now my police because I don't think they understand how traumatic of a situation it is. They probably assume it is just prostitution and these women give themselves up. If they were connected to these women personally, then they would care. Robbing a bank or killing the president may seem a bigger deal then sex trafficking because the idea of rape has been around so long that sometimes its a lost cause to save EVERY woman in the world. Material things seem more important but they are not. I'm not sure if sex trafficking can be stopped but we can't just sit around and not do anything - we have to try.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"65413100","dateCreated":"1386881047","smartDate":"Dec 12, 2013","userCreated":{"username":"staceyleee","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/staceyleee","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/65413100"},"dateDigested":1532140198,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Human Trafficking","description":"I didn't realize how prevalent human trafficking in today's society. Human trafficking has a lot of different parts to it and it's hard for the law to cover all without any run-a rounds. This helps paint a better picture because there is really nothing being done in legislation. Not only is this a problem in the United States but in the entire world! If the world became educated about the topic and really realized all the underlying problems, and what it's actually doing to society, only then will we be ready to change. Until then, the world doesn't really realize how bad the actual issue is. I don't think society cares more about material things, I think it's just that they aren't fully knowledgeable about the situation. Also, people don't know how to become directly involved, so it's hard to do anything about the topic.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"65402934","dateCreated":"1386836580","smartDate":"Dec 12, 2013","userCreated":{"username":"Courtkennedy","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/Courtkennedy","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/65402934"},"dateDigested":1532140198,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Human Trafficking Response","description":" After hearing from the speaker that came in today and reading about human trafficking in multiple articles, including this current event topic article, I have come to the conclusion that human trafficking isn't taken seriously as a crime. Human trafficking affects many peoples lives. They stated in this article that it hasn't become a law because it would take police away from burglaries and theft in communities that help the whole public. But what they don't understand is that if human trafficking is cut down then the victims can be productive member of our society.
\n Just like we learned today from our guest speaker, there are ways to help the victims of human trafficking. I think that it is important to be on the look out for possible situations that could become human trafficking, but also just as important to help the victims reset abolish their lives. The ways we can help are limited, but getting the word out about this horrible crime I think is the best way to decrease the amount of human trafficking we have. The numbers and percentages for different statistics revolving around human trafficking were astonishing and provided me with the knowledge of how serious of an issue human trafficking is. For these numerous reasons I think every state should create a law that makes human trafficking a crime, because it is.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"65402694","dateCreated":"1386834619","smartDate":"Dec 11, 2013","userCreated":{"username":"sakim4","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/sakim4","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/65402694"},"dateDigested":1532140198,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Human trrafficking","description":"I was aware that was a problem with human trafficking but I never knew the magnitude of the situation. In fact, I am more surprised by the fact that very few people actually know about human trafficking. Not only is the low awareness within society disappointing, but the little action taken by law enforcement is disappointing. Sometimes that is the problem with law enforcement. If a case or incident is too difficult to solve or perhaps difficult to spot, then the case is no longer a leading focus. I agree that the police need to be more attention to human trafficking and they need to be more persistent. Also, like the speaker said, creating new laws would help. I do not think shame is the only reason why women are afraid to speak out about being victims of human trafficking. I think they are also afraid, because right now, according to the law, they would be int trouble too,","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"65402380","dateCreated":"1386829493","smartDate":"Dec 11, 2013","userCreated":{"username":"sabrina_gouveia","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/sabrina_gouveia","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/65402380"},"dateDigested":1532140199,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Human Trafficking Worldwide","description":"The problem of human trafficking spans so large that there is no way that it can be tackled all at once. When I hear the term human trafficking, I immediately think of the sex trafficking aspect. However, there are many more categories other than sex trafficking which I am glad the article spoke about, since it needs to be brought up as well.
\n
\nThe hardest part about thinking of this issue is coming to the realization that the kids who are being trafficked are our age or younger. The role of gender also plays a big factor since there are so many more girls than boys who are being captured and sold (in the sex trafficking industry). I believe the problem stems from economic problems. Families who are in tougher situations seem to be the victims of this horrible industry.
\n
\nIn order to promote awareness, education is key. Media and advocates can expose this terrible practice, and educate females to stay away from and recognize the "signs". This article does a great job stressing the importance of education. Furthermore, movies such as Taken will also promote awareness. Before I saw Taken, I had only known about sex trafficking by watching Crime series, which means many people out there do not even know this problem is happening. By making movies and documentaries, people will be able to sympathize and empathize with these girls and help to fix the problem.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"65402144","dateCreated":"1386825615","smartDate":"Dec 11, 2013","userCreated":{"username":"kathrynteruya","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/kathrynteruya","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/65402144"},"dateDigested":1532140199,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Human Trafficking","description":"I think that this was a great article to have since we had a speaker in class who focused on this specific topic. Human trafficking, I have learned now is a huge problem that is ignored. From this article it really emphasized the fact that the government does not address human trafficking as a huge problem. This upsets me because based off of what has been displayed as statistics, this is a growing problem world wide.
\n
\nWhen it comes to the role of gender, this whole situation is geared strongly toward objectification. It is demeaning to both females and males. I understand that most victims are female; however, it is interesting that we never hear the story of the male victims faced against human trafficking.
\n
\nIn this article it expresses the fact that the government and population do not see human trafficking as big of a problem as knife crimes. I guess it would have to do with the lack of education to not grasp the fact that this is a growing problem that needs to be addressed. The world becomes more dangerous as knives are only objects that people take advantage of, the story changes when people are the ones who are used and taken advantage of repeatedly.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]}],"more":true},"comments":[]},"http":{"code":200,"status":"OK"},"redirectUrl":null,"javascript":null,"notices":{"warning":[],"error":[],"info":[],"success":[]}}
