First I feel that marriage should be between a man and woman that is it. However, I do believe gays and lesbians have the right to be together also, just not in marriage. They can be together in civil unions. Since the justices seem like they do not think that this case was proposed in too short a time, I wonder if gays and lesbians want the right to marriage for the financial benefits. There are many of those for and against the ruling that same sex partnerships should be allowed. However, I am a person that believes either gays or lesbians should have the ability to marry whom they wish. It is a given that maybe in a perfect society everyone would be attracted to the opposite sex, but it is widely accepted that this is not a perfect world. In fact, it is far from it. Also, people seem to think that gays and lesbians can choose which gender they fall in love with but this is not always the case. Think about it this way. Guys, if you are attracted to women, do you ever remember deciding that you wanted to fall in love with a woman rather than a man. And the same goes for the women out there. Do you ever remember choosing to be attracted to men? Could you change to be attracted to women instead? Im pretty sure the answer to both questions is no. Now that you understand this a bit better you can imagine that it must be the same for those who are gay or lesbian. Majority of them did not choose what gender they feel attracted to; it biological. In fact, there are many gays and lesbian that are bullied and tormented everyday. Some even commit suicide because they cannot handle the teasing and comments that are constantly subjected to. Don't you think that they would choose to not be gay\/lesbian if they are going through such torment? Who would choose to be tormented or treated like an outcast? Overall, although society seems to be uncomfortable with the idea of domestic partnerships I believe it is mostly because it is not a normality. However, I believe that gays and lesbians should have the right to marry who they want.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"61765412","dateCreated":"1364494733","smartDate":"Mar 28, 2013","userCreated":{"username":"kechoy","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/kechoy","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/61765412"},"dateDigested":1532140226,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Response","description":"The gay marriage case has been an issue for quiet sometime. In other words, I don't really care. If two men or women love each other, why not let them marry and become legal parents? I don't see what's a big deal about it. I don't think gay marriages are going to affect regular marriages. The reason why I can't say I'm fully for gay marriage is because I don't feel comfortable around gay couples. However, I think it's really selfish to not let them be with each other just because the sight of them makes me uncomfortable.
\nLike the judges in this case, I think it's too soon to make a national decision for gay marriage. Our culture is too against gays to make a rational decision about the topic. What if the decision made is to ban gay marriage across the entire nation just because many people are homophobic? That'd be extremely unfair toward the gay couples. The case came to a point where the judges were deciding on a law that could affect all 50 states rather than the few 9 that are ok with gay marriage. I believe that not taking into account of what the 41 other states want would be highly impartial and controversial. With that being said, with the dismissal of the case, the country as a whole has more time to experiment with what it wants.
\nI personally support same sex marriage. I believe that if an American citizens love someone of the same sex, that he\/she has the right to express their feelings and marry. Many if not all gay couples want to marry because they truly love each other and are willing to fight for it, and their compassion for marriage really shows all American citizens what love is and what marriage should be all about.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"61760926","dateCreated":"1364464709","smartDate":"Mar 28, 2013","userCreated":{"username":"1kristinas","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/1kristinas","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/61760926"},"dateDigested":1532140226,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Response","description":"The gay-marriage debate is a relatively new and fast-moving issue, and for these reasons, it should not be rushed. I do not understand how the justices came to the conclusion that revolved around the all-or-nothing concept. The Founding Fathers, when creating the foundation of America's government in a time period when the states treasured their sovereignty and were wary of a stronger national government, decided that the issues that were not addressed in the Constituion were left to the states. (Article X). For this reason, I feel that the states, individually, should continue to experiment with the issue. On another note, although I have not taken a clear stance on the issue personally, I believe that the key to marraige is for social stability, as opposed to Mr. Cooper's belief that marriage is for procreation. It's truly a difficult subject to touch upon because in response to what Mr. Cooper said about procreation, "Justice Kagan asked whether the government could ban a man and a woman who are over 55 from marrying because they would not be able to have children." In my opinion, Mr. Cooper could similarly respond to those for gay-marraige and ask, "If states decide to change the definition of marriage, where is the line drawn?" Meaning that, can someone decide to marry their car? Denying someone the right to marry their car can be seen as unequal and not okay. From this, you can see that there are many valid arguments, but also many valid attacks on these arguments. That is why the issue is such a pressing social issue today.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[{"id":"61466094","body":"**amendment X","dateCreated":"1364491988","smartDate":"Mar 28, 2013","userCreated":{"username":"1kristinas","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/1kristinas","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"}}],"more":0}]},{"id":"61760876","dateCreated":"1364462574","smartDate":"Mar 28, 2013","userCreated":{"username":"laaurenh","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/laaurenh","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/61760876"},"dateDigested":1532140226,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Response","description":" I do not think that this decision should be rushed in any way, however I believe that the love shared between two men or two women is the same and just as powerful as the love shared between a man and a woman.
