In some ways I agree with keeping the pageants strictly natural born women but at the same time I agree that this is discrimination against transgenders. Honestly I think that the reason that I struggle so much with this is because I never really have understood the point of beauty pageants. I really just don't get the point, it seems like such a shallow event. I don't think that we should celebrate beauty by making it a competition because there are so many versatile types of beauty in this world that I don't think it is possible to pick one over another. If I could say something to the transgender community on this issue, I'd say don't waste your time with something so frivolous.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"52964886","dateCreated":"1334647122","smartDate":"Apr 17, 2012","userCreated":{"username":"hpup17","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/hpup17","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/52964886"},"dateDigested":1532140237,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Hunter's Response","description":"I remember reading this article a while ago after discussing it in advanced creative writing class. It was brought up as a controversial issue of whether or not transgendered people should be allowed to compete in these pageants. I think analyzing it in women in lit class was different in terms of perspective because we tend to relate these issues to feminism. When looking at the topic from an outside perspective, it is appalling to think that such discrimination takes place not just while taking a women in lit class. It is universally accepted that equality should reign over any barriers whether that be gender or otherwise.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"52955728","dateCreated":"1334621141","smartDate":"Apr 16, 2012","userCreated":{"username":"jolike","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/jolike","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/52955728"},"dateDigested":1532140237,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Jona's Response","description":"The first thought that came to my mind was disgust and awe. I can't believe transgender people are even being considered in pageants because not only they are males but also because that is straight disgusting. Im not against transgender people because I feel like people should express their sexuality however not be placed in pageants. I throw up a little when i read this article due to the complete awkwardness of this situation because women unlike men have many things they can compete with each in. And when transgender people enter pageants I feel like they are going to ruin the integrity of the pageant the the title of Miss Universe. Its horrible to think that a man can someday become Miss Universe.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"52955440","dateCreated":"1334620836","smartDate":"Apr 16, 2012","userCreated":{"username":"heyjordan","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/heyjordan","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/52955440"},"dateDigested":1532140238,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Jordan's response. However another part of me is totally against the fact. I'm on the fence. I appreciate the overwhelming support for transgender equality, but a beauty paegent is a contest in which flawless individuals grow into spectacles of the female image. I think they bring out some of the worst qualities in people. It gives people the opportunity to criticize others on things that they can't really control.
\nWomen should be accepted for who they are even though they might not exactly have been women when they were born.
\nPageants shouldn't be solely based on appearance because people are more than that. People are smart and funny and maybe we should put more of an emphasis than that.
\nPeople are only blowing up the situation because they have nothing better to do.
\nPageants just encouraging women to be mean to each other and they don't make someone to be feminine or masculine but plain old mean.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"52953566","dateCreated":"1334617688","smartDate":"Apr 16, 2012","userCreated":{"username":"kichock","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/kichock","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/52953566"},"dateDigested":1532140238,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Kamea's Response","description":"I don't agree with allowing transgenders in the pageant. And second, my standpoint is from the religious point of view, and therefore reflect my Christian values. I support Miss Universe Canada's decision in telling , that the women who compete should be "naturally born" a woman. I believe that God made each and every one of us the way that we are, and when people go out and alter their bodies to completely change their sex, is offensive to God and the gifts that he has given us. It may be naive of me to believe that people should just be themselves, but I strongly believe that God has made each and every one of us in his image, and changing ourselves and our bodies is selfish and shows that we are not thankful for what God has given us. Although, from this perspective, because I do not agree with beauty pageants and do not support transgenders, I do not necessarily disagree with the fact that they are trying to allow equality in these types of competitions. I think they are just trying to be fair in allowing transgenders to compete, which is totally understandable and I can see where they are coming from and what they are trying to do. I just do not support the idea that people would want to alter their bodies, when God has made us all unique and beautiful people.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"52943008","dateCreated":"1334601671","smartDate":"Apr 16, 2012","userCreated":{"username":"midang","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/midang","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/52943008"},"dateDigested":1532140238,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Michael's Response","description":"","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"52917352","dateCreated":"1334557181","smartDate":"Apr 15, 2012","userCreated":{"username":"Alicalho","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/Alicalho","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/52917352"},"dateDigested":1532140238,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Ali's Response","description":"In my honest opinion I HATE beauty pageants as popular as it is I can honestly say they are based solely on looks and the occasional personality. I think pageants discriminate against different women whether they like it or not. I believe every women is beautiful, however, if the contestants don't have the whole package they most likely won't succeed. The main aspect to this "package" would have to be how someone looks and if a contestant doesn't have the "beauty" the judges are looking for then it doesn't matter how smart or how good of a personality the contestant has which is so corrupt. That's why I believe transgender contestants should be able to participate in pageants just like every other female should be able to. I know I got off topic in the beginning but just as I said before beauty pageants don't praise women but ultimately degrade them if they aren't skinny enough, or pretty enough, or don't have the best talent. I think all women no matter what size, sexual orientation, gender, or anything should be allowed a chance to participate and have a shot in pageants.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]}],"more":true},"comments":[]},"http":{"code":200,"status":"OK"},"redirectUrl":null,"javascript":null,"notices":{"warning":[],"error":[],"info":[],"success":[]}}
