I think that it is a bad thing to many teens look towards the media as role models. I also cant believe that there are many teens that want to grow up to be what they may see in gossip magazines. I think that it is a bad thing becuase many of the things that we see arent what is actually there. Many of the things are products of an orginal photo and a large amount of photo editing.

Imagine yourself being the same weight that you are now, but 6 inches taller. Scary isnt it? That cant be healthy. The media runs society, something that should be changed, or even reversed, but isnt. Its interesting how women are seen as the minority in certain areas of society, but are the majority in others. In nearly every college handout Ive seen, women make up more than 50% of the student body, but in video games, the men to women ratio is 5:1? Its reasonable once you think about it though; games such as Mario have mostly male characters, the only females being princess peach, and maybe toadette. I also think its true what has been said about women's clothing, because ironically, there is little clothing on them at all. Women in undergarments fighting crime seems a bit rediculous, right? It makes no sense. Let women be women, and I mean realistic, honest women.
Reading this article reminded me on my mom telling me she was hired as a flight attendant right out of college because she was "pretty". It was written in the job description, and flight attendants were weighed annually and fired if found to be overweight. The company told my mom she would be fired after reaching a certain age that men found less attractive, so she had no job security. Fortunately, her union did a good job of gaining benefits for the women in the company but it was a long and hard battle. The media still enforces the "pretty, skinny" stereotype of women. It is hard to say where this started, because it seems there has always been a perfect "ideal" for women to strive to. Even in Ancient Greece, women prayed to Aphrodite for beauty.
It is really scary to see the effect of media on children and teenagers. One of the disturbing facts that the article mentions is women are viewed as “objects” rather then a human being. Now that I think about it, the relationship of a woman to a man is like a bait to a fish. In media like music videos, women are portrayed as a toy that satisfy men and get the men hook on. Also, it is shocking that women are the ones producing and distributing the unhealthy magazine images. I think the only reason is because when women are pretty and skinny, they feel that they are in power. Men will admire and follow them around. Even though we all know looks isn't important compare to personality, I think having a good appearance is at an advantage as it creates better impression and more attraction. However, I still believe appearance should not be the determining factor of a person. Inner beauty is more important in the long run. It takes both males and females to stop the spreading of the deceiving media. Men need to learn to appreciate inner beauty so that women will have the courage to neglect watching their weights or beautifying themselves in a certain way.
It is amazing how influential and big the media is in this day and age. It’s everywhere! It can’t be avoided. I think that everyone is influenced or affected in one way or another because of the submersion our society has had in it. It’s kind of crazy to think about actually. I mean, this influence basically tells us and makes many believe what is beautiful and what is not. The images, often photoshopped or fake, are made to what one wants it to look like. Girls today are very set on the fact that to be beautiful, popular, likable, and such things, that they need to be thin. Only because of the media we think that this is what an ideal person should look like. Because many strive for this so-called “perfection”, things can get very dangerous and bring a rise to eating disorders and other harmful effects.

Something that I didn’t really notice that was mentioned in the article is that even though there have been big gains, American women are still “absent” among the media watched by kids and teens. To me, I didn’t really notice that there’s a lack of women. Another thing that is mentioned that I agree with and that I think is a bad influence on women, especially young girls who are in that stage of fitting in and such, is the kind of person a woman portrays. It says that in storylines, women are often concerned with their looks more than anything. That’s not what’s important! Or what girls should be thinking is important. It also says that animated figures are not sending the right images, with things like unrealistic waists and shapes of the bodies. I thought that this was an interesting statement: “Such disfigured dames have little room for a womb or any internal organ.” Thinking about it now, this is true.

The women as objects is something that is sadly portrayed. This is true, but I think that it should be changed for the better and empower women more. The idea that you need to be a size 0 to be pretty is absurd, and it is greatly affecting teenage girls today. What media portrays is drastically unrealistic, and extremely unhealthy. There are so many touch ups in magazines, you can't believe anything you see. The concept that both boys and girls draw from it is crazy. I didn't realize that men are shown more often in movies than women. I think I will notice it more often now that I have read this article. It's sad that men make more than women money wise for doing the same job. This happens everywhere, not only in the entertainment business. I'm glad that articles like this are being published, and hopefully many people read it and realize how crazy it is to get sucked into the media whirlwind.
Every time I hear about this topic, I just feel a sharp pain because I know how true these facts really are. Today in our world we are so influenced by the media that it takes control of our lives. Many people trust what they seen on the screen or hear and live life that way. But unfortunately most of the "information" is not true. As mentioned in the article the body image of women has been badly influenced by the media. I constantly hear my female peers or even myself complaining about the flaws of our body. We compare our real selves to that of the touched up images in the media and take the difference to heart. Women beat themselves up everyday because they do not have the "perfect body." The media also influences the image of women to men. When men see these images of the media women they start to believe that we are really suppose to look like that when really it is impossible.

The media also degrades women by presenting them as objects. we are constantly beaten down my tv, music, and video games because we are not the perfect media girl. But what people have really failed to see in the past generations is that we are people who are all different which makes us beautiful. My generation has sadly lost the love and respect for themselves all because of media.
After reading this article, I became aware of many lopsided statistics, but the facts did not surprise me. Media has become a driving force in today's society and along with it, comes unfortunate biases and skewed thinking. I'm not sure how these issues can be solved. I think that although stick thin women are definitely not the norm, this body type has become idealized in recent times and have been incorporated into the word, "beauty." I don't think that this perception will change soon, but I do believe that with more women in executive, writing, or producing positions, the ways which women are portrayed on screen will change and within time, the public will react positively to the idea of a healthy sized and respectable woman. I think that these stick thin women are still used widely in the media because the force behind this business is to get their stories heard, obtain a large following, and mainly, to make money. It is a very competitive industry and industries are willing to promote unhealthy body images because they feel that by doing so; by showing their new fashion line on stick thin women, they will increase their sales. But skinny does not equate to flattering and I think that if people continue to respond negatively to these decisions (as in the Ralph Lauren story), unhealthy appearances will fade. I think this sexy look began when women started to step out of the house. Although this does not sound great, I think there is some truth to it because before, women were only in the house and were in charge of indoor chores. But as they broke out into new fields, they gained a sense of liberty as well as a new confidence. This along with the recent eras and fads, popularized the idea of a sexy woman; in my belief. Finally, women are portrayed negatively not only through the media, but also through stereotypes and mindsets of different cultures and of the past. A lot of people are set in their thinking and unfortunately there is an unfortunate result.
This article mainly focuses on statistical research which shows that women in the media are viewed in an objectifying and sexy manner. Yet, I believe that these statistics (some of which seemed like undeveloped research) were completely unsurprising. If one were to look at almost any media portal that exists, he or she would find some way in which woman are regarded in lower regards than men. How did this start? For the most part, since early civilizations, woman have been portrayed as a powerless. gender. This may be due to the more sensitive and compassionate traits of a typical female. Nonetheless, I believe that this "weak" image of women translated into a female media character that is always under male power. Somehow, this image changed into an overly feminine, thin and still sometimes helpless character. I believe that many girls in this day and age are more aware then before about the influence of the media. Yet, I don't believe that being aware of this fact has made much of a direct influence on the use of the media. Being aware of a problem does not prevent it. Therefore, I believe that we as a society need to figure out alternative or additional tools besides (or along with) media literacy. Yet, restricting television and magazines on what they are allowed to show goes against the constitutional rights of freedom of speech/press. So, what is the solution?
Bias in the media exists. I do not deny this. However, I think that this article is more sensational than accurate. True that there the ratio of men to women is high in some areas today. But look at the past! It is much better than views expressed in the past. In times such as the fifties, women were objectified as subservient to men to no end. And yet look how far we have come! The article seems to imply that there is no hope for ever making women more equal! I firmly disagree with this - I believe that the equality between sexes will continue to reach until it has reached its semi-utopianic level.

It may also be noted, in my opinion, that although youngsters are subject to these ideas, the aging class will gain more sense, and so to will the young of today become the wise of tomorrow.
