When I first heard about the article from the Honolulu Advertiser via Twitter, I was astonished on how little was done on the school's part to protect thier students. I think that Kamehameha went against state law in this situation because maybe their reputation was more important to them than the protection of thier students. I think that students protection is more important than anyone's reputation becuase a school doesnt have to worry about their reputaiton if they do not have any students.
\n
\nOne thing that I didnt understand about the situation was why did she only tell on the third time that she was sexually assulted. The only reason that I was able to come up with was that maybe she was kidnapped or being held hostage in her room, and therefore she wasnt able to contact authorities. But I dont know. Or maybe it was because she was afraid to go to the autorities and by not letting people know what had happened, they boys thought that maybe she was okay with it.
\n
\nI am really good friends with a guy who used to be a bording student at Kam, but has recently graduated, and my mom and I would drop him off at the campus after we finished work (we used to perform at the Hale Koa Luau Show). The campus was only protected from the outside. People werent allowed into the campus after a certain time, but that was the only security on campus.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"14143937","dateCreated":"1252660178","smartDate":"Sep 11, 2009","userCreated":{"username":"neagbaya","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/neagbaya","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/14143937"},"dateDigested":1532140256,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"...","description":"After reading the article, I did not just feel appalled and sad about the whole incident, but I actually clenched my fist, wanting to beat the crap out of those three kids. One of my main principles in life is to never hit a woman, or put them in an uncomfortable position (it's actually the topic of my 'Gender Lessons Paper'). The fact that the victim is a twelve year old girl makes it even much worse.
\n
\nFirst of all, to the ladies: please don't judge the whole male gender by the actions of those types of idiotic men. These kids are probably desperate cowards who can't get girlfriends. Second, shame on Kamehameha for not doing quick legal action. Protection of reputation is much less important than the protection of the twelve year old girl. Shame on Kamehameha also for arguing that these types of incident are for the family to deal with. If the administrators of the school had any sense of decency, even the slightest of it, that argument would not even have been brought up.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"14143829","dateCreated":"1252659219","smartDate":"Sep 11, 2009","userCreated":{"username":"dekristin","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/dekristin","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/14143829"},"dateDigested":1532140256,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"oh dear.","description":"first of all, not to sound mean, but Kamehameha has a way to always get around the law. They're special. I think that they chose to do so because of the doubt that the parents of students, or even the general public, would have concerning the safety of the children. Kamehameha, I would think, is a pretty safe school considering there are always security people walking around and guard houses are everywhere. Though this may seem like enough, people can only be watched over to a certain point, otherwise that would be a totally different issue. I believe that Kamehameha is ashamed that they did not respond as efficiently as they should have, and also for bringing shame upon the victim and the families involved. At that age, if it were to happen to me, I would be afraid to tell someone. As a girl, there is always the fear that people will think of you in the wrong way, or label you as something that you're not, and for the victim, I think this was the case as for the reason why she did not tell anyone what happened sooner. Many women and girls are afraid for the very same reason, but should not be scared to take action, before something tragic like this happens again.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"14143651","dateCreated":"1252657667","smartDate":"Sep 11, 2009","userCreated":{"username":"bryap","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/bryap","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/14143651"},"dateDigested":1532140256,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Surprised","description":"I cannot believe this would ever happen at Kamehameha Schools. I was totally shocked when I read the article. It was extremely surprising that the police was not contacted when the authorities of the school knew about this situation. Even though the police was not contacted, maybe the authorities of Kamehameha Schools took into consideration that she is already defeated, and she does not want to be embarassed even more. Another surprising factor was that she did not even tell people after she was sexually assaulted for three days straight. After this incident, her parents, actually all parents in general, are probably now thinking about the safety and worry if their daughter is boarding, can this happen to her?","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"14143441","dateCreated":"1252655413","smartDate":"Sep 11, 2009","userCreated":{"username":"kenziesato","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/kenziesato","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/14143441"},"dateDigested":1532140256,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"WOW.","description":"I heard something about this happened at Kamehameha School, but after reading about it, I can't believe it was so out of hand. First off, it is astounding to me that this happened for three days in a row without anyone finding out about it! Second, these two boys are so young. It's really disturbing to me that such young people today do such things. Most importantly, I don't agree with the way that it was handled and how the police was not immediately contacted by the school when they found about because it is a very serious offense. I think that since this happened because of Kamehameha School's policy, then that policy really needs to be changed because sexual assault is not something to be taken lightly. First of all the fact that Kamehameha, a school who is known for rich traditions and that is repected among the entire oahu community decides to do nothing about this except make a measly investigations raises a lot of questions for me like is the school board making good decisions on who is running the school? or do the people running the school understand their responcibilities? Secondly these are students attending the school, not just some random rape which is very disturbing. All I can say is that i'm very dissapointed and I hope other schools learn from this and be more involved in these kinds of cases if it ever happens and not just leave it up to someone elese to get their hands dirty.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"14142099","dateCreated":"1252648620","smartDate":"Sep 10, 2009","userCreated":{"username":"rachelkaya","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/rachelkaya","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/14142099"},"dateDigested":1532140256,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"whoops.","description":"My subject is supposed to say DISGUSTING.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"14141717","dateCreated":"1252646484","smartDate":"Sep 10, 2009","userCreated":{"username":"kellyho","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/kellyho","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/14141717"},"dateDigested":1532140256,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"disturbing","description":" The news of a twelve year old girl being sexually assaulted by two thirteen year old boys in the Kamehameha dormitory was greatly disturbing to me. The fact that made this incident even more unbelievable was when Kamehameha didn't immediately report the assault to the police. By doing so, Kamehameha violated the state law. Not to say Kamehameha, but any school will be embarrassed to have such a scandal happen on campus. As the wealthiest school in Hawaii, Kamehameha feared that the student's misbehavior will damage its reputation. Personally, I think sexual assault is the matter of not just the family but also the school. School is supposed to be a place to learn knowledge and the ability of differentiating what is right and wrong. If the school doesn't even show enough immediate concern to contact the police, then the children are likely to think that the conduct of sexually assaulting another student is not that big of a deal. The school should definitely set a good example on dealing with this situation.
\n On the other hand, instead of telling her parents or the school immediately about her situation, the victim waited for three days. I am sure the girl wouldn't have told anyone if the assault stopped after one or two days. She would have just let the incident passed because she was scared and embarrassed to stand up and tell the truth. From this, I think it is important for women to learn to stand up for their rights and justice no matter how bad the situation might be.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"14141617","dateCreated":"1252646007","smartDate":"Sep 10, 2009","userCreated":{"username":"rachelkaya","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/rachelkaya","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/14141617"},"dateDigested":1532140257,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Disusting.","description":"I am disgusted with the way Kamehameha Schools handled this issue. I cannot even imagine how the parents of this young girl feel, to know that their child was assaulted, and the school she attends cares very little about her safety and well being. They are furious, and rightfully so. I think women and girls do not always speak out when they are sexually assaulted because they are afraid to do so. Maybe they do not think anyone will believe them and it is a possibility that they were threatened by the assaulter and frightened out of reporting the assault. This is probably the case in many assaults, but the fact that this girl gathered the courage to tell someone, and then her school does nothing to back her up is outrageous. To feel unsafe in your own school, and for this girl, her living quarters and second home, is an unimaginable feeling, and it is so much worse that Kamehameha Schools took no action to discipline the two boys who violated her. I think the lack of supervision is probably a prime factor in this sexual assault, but at the same time, this could have happened anywhere, you just never know. The assault of this girl is a matter of not just the family, but also the school. I think it is crazy that the Kamehameha Schools even considers that it is not a school problem. Simply the fact that she was assaulted by other Kamehameha students makes this the school\u2019s issue, but even more so because the victim was on campus and she was supposed to be under the supervision of the school. I cannot fathom why the school would not take responsibility for this awful doing, but if it would not even protect its own student who was violated on school property and by fellow classmates, I think it is a potentially dangerous environment. Overall, I am just sickened by this entire situation. It is so twisted that a twelve year old was sexually assaulted by her own classmates, but everything is just raised to something much, much worse because her school took no action. This could have been prevented with proper supervision, and the school would not take do anything to make up for its mistake.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"14141069","dateCreated":"1252643254","smartDate":"Sep 10, 2009","userCreated":{"username":"nipeltze","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/nipeltze","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/14141069"},"dateDigested":1532140257,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Atrocious","description":"This happening at Kamehameha is shocking! Usually, one reads about a girl alone in an alleyway getting raped at two in the morning, but in this case it was in the school dormatories; furthermore, three nights in a row! What I have trouble understanding is how nobody heard or suspected what was going on. Dorms are closely packed together, and the walls are definitely less than soundproof. Also, why would the girl not report the boy's behaviors until the third happenning? I also do not understand how two thirteen year old boys could preform such an act. They are so young, yet by eighth grade, I believe you are fully responsible for your actions.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]}],"more":true},"comments":[]},"http":{"code":200,"status":"OK"},"redirectUrl":null,"javascript":null,"notices":{"warning":[],"error":[],"info":[],"success":[]}}
