I know that to some extent, girls can over board with school and the way that they show up. I think that if they want to dress in tight uncomfortable clothes then that is on them. For me, I like to wear clothes that are I comfortable and sometimes they are against the rules. I feel like the rule that slippers are out of dress code isn't fair because I don't think the back of a girls ankle is distracting to anyone. However, I do think that midriff can be a distraction. This article does a good job with talking about a topic that is talked about throughout all schools.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"65895106","dateCreated":"1391029387","smartDate":"Jan 29, 2014","userCreated":{"username":"HoakaleiDawson","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/HoakaleiDawson","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/65895106"},"dateDigested":1532140291,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Dress Code CE","description":"This article not only touches on but hits a many good points of dress code. I feel like some of the teachers in this school are like predators looking to bust someone for dress code. Some teachers even go out of their way and take their free time to go to senior benches or walk around to give out dress code slips. I understand that some girls do wear clothes that aren't always appropriate for school but I feel that they should know what is appropriate to wear; this is the point of dress code but the way it is being reinforced is uncomfortable for many. Like the article mentioned, society does not give girls many choices of what to wear. I didn't realize how much the dress code discriminates girls. Boys are allowed to workout shirtless while girls are encouraged to keep cloths on at all times. At 'Iolani I can think of a few teachers who could be considered a predator because he\/she goes out of his\/her way to look for girls with too short skirts or low cut tops. I understand that administrators want dress code so visitors on campus don't see anything "inappropriate." I have never liked dress codes and I feel it's very limiting in my clothes which makes it hard for me each morning to get dressed. I feel that it is very difficult to follow these rules and I have resorted to wearing long jeans everyday at school. I have "long legs" and when I buy jeans that come to the knees, they don't exactly make it all the way to my knees and therefore I can't wear it to school. I don't think it is right to have these rules because I think it is very demeaning and unnecessary. When I dress myself for non-school days, which would not be in dress code, my mom wouldn't scold me or say to change. But sometimes in the mornings she'll ask "is that in dress code?" not because she thinks I shouldn't wear "inappropriate" clothes but because she doesn't want me to get in trouble. These rules make it hard for me to go shopping and my mom is often baffled at these rules questioning why we can't wear a simple t-shirt. I don't think they should have rules like this at schools and I hope in the future they will change these rules so they won't be as demeaning.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"65891394","dateCreated":"1391017490","smartDate":"Jan 29, 2014","userCreated":{"username":"suyamada","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/suyamada","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/pic\/1390454468\/suyamada-lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/65891394"},"dateDigested":1532140292,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Dress Code CE","description":"I have found the dress code at Iolani puzzling and frustrating over the six years I've been here. At first it didn't bother me because I was a little naive and oblivious to why we even had one. As I started to get older, the dress code became more strict. The length of bottoms went down to our knees and our tops were raised to the collarbone. What was the purpose of this? Will fabric that covers four more inches of my body automatically desexualize me? I don't think any girl should have to feel insecure or uncomfortable when she walks around campus. Some of the ways teachers bust students is also absurd. One teacher actually gave me a once over and then walked away disappointedly. At that moment, I felt like an object. I felt like the only think that mattered was what I was wearing and if it was appropriate. The teacher didn't say hi or greet me, he just looked at me and walked away. If a boy is attracted to a girl, or if a boy to a boy, they are going to stare at them. They will become distracted regardless of what they're wearing. I agree with the article in the sense that girls shouldn't wear what they would wear to a concert or to the beach, but if schools start letting girls make their own decisions and shape their own filter of what is appropriate and what's not, then we'll be better off in the real world. I don't want my daughter to feel objectified at school. I don't want her to walk out the door and feel like she will be judged by administration and her classmates for what she wears. Dress code itself is a blurred line and I hope Iolani will learn how to respect girls more.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"65884976","dateCreated":"1390989153","smartDate":"Jan 29, 2014","userCreated":{"username":"frpaulo","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/frpaulo","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/65884976"},"dateDigested":1532140292,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Dress Code CE","description":"For starters, I dislike dress code. Not because I've been sent to the office multiple times because my camisole was at just about the same height as the girl next to me or because my skirt was one centimeter above my knee... To me, clothing is a form of an expression. By limiting the ways in which girls can express themselves while they are in school, they are essentially telling us how to act and how to live. I agree that there is a line of decency (don't show up to school in your underwear), but that does not mean that teachers have the right to ogle adolescent girls to check if they are "indecent."
\nIt is difficult in the current day and age to shop for clothes that are actually in dress code. Fashion changes with the generation and it seems that fashion is always out of dress code. Find something that covers your collarbone? Oops, it's a T-shirt and you're out of dress code. Go to Mr. Brown.
\nAnd the notion that girls are the only ones that can be distracting? I always thought that schools enforced dress code to avoid distasteful or inappropriate outfits, but Chemly argues that while it\u2019s important to dress appropriately according to the event, women shouldn\u2019t have to worry about whether others, especially men, are distracted by their clothing. While I agree that she makes a good point that there are much more important issues that society neglects, I think she over analyzes the idea of dress codes. I automatically feel judged when ridiculed on something that I'm wearing and even worse when disciplinary action is taken. It doesn't matter what gender the teacher "busting" me is, it is uncomfortable. I do agree that girls should be aware of their environment and dress themselves accordingly, like the article said, you wouldn't wear sweats to a wedding. Making the dress code crazily strict, is only drawing more attention to girls and their bodies. It seems to only bother certain people who go out of their way to spot collarbones. I've even heard some teachers say that they only really bust students because they worry that a teacher will criticize them for not taking action and correcting the student. I know some girls that can make trash bags look good, would we have to eventually put a bag over their faces too? When the author reported that one of the 13-year-old girls had said she did not like being inspected at school, I automatically empathized with her. On a daily basis, whenever I see a teacher that I know is looking for dress code violations, I have a tendency to out a binder in front of my chest to block their view. I can never feel comfortable around certain teachers because I know that they are inspecting me. This is the sad truth that I know many other girls face every day as well.
\nAlso the part about how girls don't really have a choice as to what to wear spoke to me. We are all limited to what the department stores choose to sell. Nowadays for girls the most populus clothes are high waisted jeans, crop tops, leggings, etc. which are all out of Iolani's dress code. I'm sure for many other girls and including myself it is a struggle finding in dress code tops and pants when 80% of the clothes are out of dress code.

Being out of dress code at a school with a uniform is impossible because you stick out like a sore thumb. I guess I can say that being in dress code has never been a problem for me or any other boys because its always been quite easy for us to follow these simple rules. For most boys, making a fashion statement isn't that big of a deal. We wake up and put on the things we know we are most comfortable in with no thought of how we look towards others. Most times i just throw a sweatshirt on if I don't exactly like the shirt I'm wearing. On the other hand, girls are much different from boys in this sense. Many girls enjoy being fashion forward and being in style with the latest trends. However, keeping up with whats "in" often causes girls to cross the lines of the dress code. I feel that if a school truly wants to enforce a dress code, and they feel as if the dress of females is really affecting others then they should enforce a uniform. Although everyone knows that uniforms suck, it's the only way to enforce a dress code in which everyone will be looked at equally because either you're in dress code or you're not, there is no area for debate. My opinion is that dress codes are quite pointless. Girls are different from boys for a reason. We shouldn't be treated the same when it comes to dress code because we are all different. Girls are much more expressive human beings than boys and so we should allow them to show their expressive side. However, good taste should always be taken into consideration.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]}],"more":true},"comments":[]},"http":{"code":200,"status":"OK"},"redirectUrl":null,"javascript":null,"notices":{"warning":[],"error":[],"info":[],"success":[]}}
