It is just so crazy to think that this isn't happening because i think that if we really think about it we all know someone that thinks this way . I think that it is sad that the media thinks its okay for models to be that skinny when it is very unhealthy. We should promote good health instead of skinny. I think that the adds and videos put a lot of pressure on young women to look and be like the women they see in the magazines and on TV. What is even more scary is that I don't know if you can ever reverse the media's idea about being skinny even though everyone knows its wrong.
I thought that this Youtube clip was really disturbing. The statistics given in the clip are very hard to view being that I can't believe that women are so affected by the images that are in magazines that they would go and alter their own personal image based on what they see.

It's hard to believe that a little girl has fears of being fat fom the age of 10 years old because of the things she sees on television, internet or magazines.

What is even more shocking to me is that although majority of the people who are affected by the media are aware of the fact that pictures are altered, and that the celebrities we see maybe aren't really that flawless, they still have the urge to strive for unrealistic body figures, facial features and silky smooth skin.

I find it extremely fascinating how someone, women in particular can just see something from the media and have an entire view of the way that they want their appearance to look like. I find it ridiculous how people actually work towards perfecting their bodies hoping to look like their role models on the cover of Vogue. The whole idea of media having such a huge affect on everyone seems quite extreme to me.
Wow. I feel too fat, too short, not big enough, just a typical teenager. However, I don't refer to the media about the ideal body type. I think that beauty should refer to each girl differently. That every girl should be skinny in proportion to her body size and bone structure. I believe that is beauty, and not reforming to the exact image of a model. I would not read a magazine if it had retouched pictures of models. I would think the models pretty and interesting, but I would rather see real teens because that's the reality. Not something artificial like models.
To be honest, I’m not one hundred percent comfortable with my own body. I am not sure whether or not the media is the sole influencing factor of my body image, but I know that it plays a large role in what I perceive as pretty or beautiful. I think that reading magazines and watching movies and commercials has instilled the sense that thin is beautiful, though in reality this may not be the case. I would still read magazines if it did not contain retouched pictures, but I would find it strange if a magazine depicted women of a more normal heights and weights. I think that the more seductive body image portrayed in many advertisements and other forms of media is has different effects on men and women. I think that men would be compelled to buy the product because they would unconsciously and automatically relate the product to sex and “beautiful” women. As for the advertisement’s effect on women, I believe that the advertisement is meant to make women admire and even envy the model, thus compelling the viewer to buy the product. I thought that the images of emaciated models were extremely disturbing. I feel that it is truly sad and irresponsible of the media to rely on people’s insecurities in order to make a profit.
The idea of the media influencing women and their body image today is a very important issue that is overlooked by females around the world. Over time, the media has created the standard body type of women to be sickly thin rather than porportional. When most women look at themselves in the mirror, the thought of being fat automatically pops into their mind. Why must we conclude to such an extreme that it just makes us look ignorant. Rejoice in your body type no matter what it may be and realize that pursuing to be attractive is not something that should dominate one's lifestyle. What I also found interesting was the statistic regarding the average number of advertisements that females view in a single day. I began to think about what would happen if less than 10% of those ads focused on normal women who are happy and content with themselves. My guess is that it would have a large impact on our superficial society and would ultimately condone body images that create weak women both physically and mentally. However, we are to be partially blamed for our vulnerability. I look forward to the day when we realize that these women are just icons and should not pursue to be like them.
supposed" to make them look skinny and flawless. It is bad for girls who are insecure about themselves to look at media, seeking for a solution to cover their flaws. Instead of improving their own being, they are changing things more drastically; and it is in a bad way. Yes the women we look at in the magazines and adds are skinny and are very attractive and their images are eye catching. However, when average women try to resemble these models, their images are distorted and sick, not pretty. And to normal people, this type of beauty is looked down upon. They are not only making their image worse, but also destroying their strength, confidence and good health. Trying to be skinny can result badly and people think that it is unattractive; the opposite message you were going for. We are normal people who do not have the fabulous, rich life of those pictured on the television and magazines. We cannot live in a fantasy life and ultimately something will no go right if you try to copy that. I think that this video was very impressive and it made me think deeply about the song playing in the background and the intense pictures. Women today need to realize that people do support and love average, middle sized women and girls. The media is not here to judge how we live life, its just suppose to be a means of communicating products for sell.
The media encourages many women to be like the models in magazines and makes the average female feel insecure. The advertisements take advantage of the insecure women and sell many different products. I was really astonished at how much the diet industry makes…$1oo billion! The advertisers make the physical appearance important than personality. When I saw the anorexic looking models, I was disgusted and it definitely did not make me want to buy things to be like them. I strongly agree that larger women represent the ability to reproduce the next generation. Even though I know this and agree with the sentence before, I am one of the many influenced women who think that the models look attractive and have the need to make an effort to look like them. But in beauty, looks is not the only factor. Personality and character of a person makes women “beautiful.” It is unfortunate that most of the female population does not have the ability to be like the models, but I think models are merely images that make products look better. In fact, the media has so much power it dictates the way we think, speak, act and even the way we see ourselves. Media has changed America’s view on what beauty is. Now beauty is considered tall and stick-thin, but no one in the real world can look like that without causing themselves harm. The media is like poison. Everyday it corrupts the minds of little girls and it leads to a future of self-hatred and disappointment. It has taken me years to become more comfortable with my body and sometimes I still wish I were a little bit different. But strong figures in my life like my mother, my grandmother, and close friends have told me otherwise. The media may never change, so it is up to parents, close relatives and friends to tell their young ones that they are beautiful everyday. If we instill high esteems into our children, perhaps they will learn to value themselves for other qualities besides their looks and maybe they won’t let the media brainwash them in the future.
I enjoyed this video, because I felt that I could relate to it in many ways. I often do feel self-conscious when viewing advertisements that promote the unbelievably skinny body type. I have felt that need to lose weight and be skinnier, but I would never do anything that would risk my health in anyway. I have a friend who is especially concerned about her body image and her weight and often tells me that she is heavier than the models in the media or begins comparing herself to other people she knows. The media has been a huge factor in this, because she often compares herself to the celebrities in both America and Japan.

I enjoyed reading the statistics about what women think about themselves. I found the statistics about the average female and the models interesting, because it shows that not everyone is like the models. Our society is so focused on being of a certain body type that we all think that only that particular body type is beautiful. I also thought that the part about the college students and their attempts at losing weight (excessive exercise, fasting, etc.) was interesting, because I will be going to college this coming up May. My dad always tells me that I am going to gain the Freshman Fifteen if I do not exercise and do this, that, or the other thing.
