I was surprised that children were encouraged to act like children of the opposite sex. In Sweden, the tables are turned. Women are dominating society and are extremely successful. They have surpassed the goals of feminism, and are going beyond into an unhealthy territory. Feminism is simply the equality of men and women socially, politically, and economically. Sweden achieved its goal of being the top gender-equal country in the world, but are they truly successful?
\n
\nIt was interesting that in America, boys and girls played with opposite sex toys in "gender-acceptable ways." Men continue to dominate society despite women's efforts to gain equality, but slowly women are gaining footage. It is clearly apparent that America, ranked 31 for neutrality, isn't nearly as close as other countries at reaching gender equality, but should Sweden, a highly pro-female society, really be ranked number one?
\n
\nMen in pro-female countries are exemplifying signs of discontentment. Similarly, females in pro-male countries feel the same way. Sweden is too pro-female while countries such as America are too pro-male. It is unhealthy for any gender to overpower the other. The delicate balance of gender equality is achievable, yet difficult to attain.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"13963329","dateCreated":"1252057693","smartDate":"Sep 4, 2009","userCreated":{"username":"kenziesato","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/kenziesato","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/13963329"},"dateDigested":1532141303,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Anti-Sexism in Sweden...","description":"In response to this article, I have to say that I had no idea that there were such anti-sexism programs. I think that males and females should be treated equally (they're both human beings!!!), but it seems that the anti-sexism training in kindergarten where teachers "deliberately attempt to switch traditional gender roles" is a bit out of hand. Giving a child of a certain sex a toy that is normally associated with in the opposite sex doesn't seem like it's teaching a child to be equal to the other sex. Also, how is a kindergartner to understand this concept of equality? I would assume that at such a young age they don't even think about sexism. I think that by teachers treating all the children equally regarding gender, is a way to leaving a impression on the kids through growing up.
\nAlso, I think that the main section of inequality of sexes is not in kindergarten, but with adults. Perhaps because this effort for equality is being enacted by adults and supported enough to be put into schools, it is kind of telling that the attitudes of adults are also leaning toward equality. It is the grown people that have to change their attitudes in order to become the most, "advanced country for women." I think that it is not terrible to let people know that it should be equal for man and woman, but forcing kids to play with certain toys is not necessary. Also, the whole idea here is EQUALITY, which means the anti-sexism programs should not be "pro-women" in attempt to balance things out, but emphasize that they should be equal.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"13963029","dateCreated":"1252055141","smartDate":"Sep 4, 2009","userCreated":{"username":"africanqueen","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/africanqueen","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/pic\/1251186290\/africanqueen-lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/13963029"},"dateDigested":1532141304,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Anti-sexism program headed in the wrong direction","description":" When I first started to read this article, I thought that this may be a really good way to equalize the sexes but it really didnt. I believe the Nestor is right to concur for really this method only raises the women and boggs down the men. I thought it was quite interesting when someone said that boys are guilty just because they are boys. It seems that Sweden has really focused too much on helping the discrimination against women but have unfortunately turned it around on the boys. Although there is good intentions behind this approach, the result is not what was expected.
\n I think we really need to appreciate what each gender excels at. The fact of the matter is that everyone wants to be recognized on the same level as everyone else. These people had the right idea about starting early but really we should be pointing out positive qualities about the other gender and then about our own gender. We need to practice real feminism, not pro-female.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"13962723","dateCreated":"1252052833","smartDate":"Sep 4, 2009","userCreated":{"username":"TawniMurphy","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/TawniMurphy","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/13962723"},"dateDigested":1532141304,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"hmmmmm... One thing that surprised me was that many people in the US consider themselves to be feminists, why would anti-sexism matter in the education environment.
\nWhat struck me the most was that many things in the US, such as school, are trying to combine the sexes so that they are able to integrate more easily. Parents and teachers alike are trying to raise their kids the way that they want them to, and majority is to be integrated with the opposite sex because that is the way that it is in "the real world."
\nI think that a child should be who they are, no matter of their sex. Although parents, friends, peers, society, adn the media set "standards" for each sex, that doesnt mean that we have to listen to and follow those standards. The final choice on who we are and who we become is entirely up to us. It is our own decision. I cannot believe something like this is done anywhere. But I was thinking maybe there is some logical explanation. Why would children be under Anti-Sexism Awareness Training starting from kindergarten? Maybe the country feels that being a male or female and doing what the opposite sex usually does, the people will understand more about the opposite sex as the children under this program grow older. Or, maybe because the man have been the dominant sex for an extremely ong time, (as you can see in historical events like the women suffrage; only men can vote) they want to switch the role of men and women. Like the men will do the typical female job and the women will do the typical male job. It is kind of ironic that the program is designed to eliminate sex inequalities yet it seems that countries like Sweden that use this program want the women to be more dominant. There is nothing wrong with that but the only thing that screws this whole program is that there will not be sex equality. Even though they are trying to achieve equality, this way clearly is not the best.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"13962031","dateCreated":"1252048068","smartDate":"Sep 4, 2009","userCreated":{"username":"kekaneta","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/kekaneta","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/13962031"},"dateDigested":1532141304,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"i think your scale is off balance.","description":"When I first looked at this article by Sara McGrath, the opening couple paragraphs seemed to put Sweden and the other Nordic countries in a positive light for ranking so highly in the 2005 Global Gender Gap Report. I felt the need to commend them for putting so much emphasis on anti- sexism training, although I did not completely agree with the methods they chose in order to do so. Forcing children to play with toys which are not truthfully aimed at their demographic seems like tricking the children rather than educating them. However, when looking at the world today, gender gaps are ever present, making me think that these means may be necessary. When I came across the part which stated the failure of such programs in the states, I was not surprised that they not work like they do in Sweden. The US is built upon a collaboration of cultures and beliefs. Just because a child may be taught one way at school, does not mean that they will not pick up on outside practices\/beliefs which are exhibited by their surroundings. This in turn is why parents want their kids to pursue gender defined professions; because their culture and upbringing makes this seem like the logical and right choice. These beliefs then ultimately leads to discontent which the article makes note of. Although anti-sexism programs in theory are enacted to promote gender equality, it has become a means to reverse the gender hierarchy. If people feel otherwise, that by putting forth anti-sexism programs they are promoting gender equality, their scales are obviously off balance. These programs have turned countries to be pro-female ones, going completely against the hopes and goals of feminists worldwide. I can understand why men are growing unhappy with the current situation concerning anti-sexism training, which is why I agree with McGrath when she says that instead, parents should take alternative approaches when raising their children, thus, fostering an environment where kids can grow to be true themselves and their gender.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"13961963","dateCreated":"1252047601","smartDate":"Sep 4, 2009","userCreated":{"username":"dekristin","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/dekristin","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/13961963"},"dateDigested":1532141304,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"ironic??","description":"After I read this article, I think I was more in shock that the US was ranked so low rather than being shocked about the statistics of anti-sexism. Because it seems like there is a big push for women's rights, I had expected to see results through these statistics, but instead, I was rather disappointed. In my opinion, the term "anti-sexism" is often commonly understood as "extreme feminism," and is used in a derogatory way. People are using the word more as a way of pushing for female domination in all areas rather than the equality of the sexes. If anti-sexism programs are used in the American educational system, I think that this might actually help and hurt all students. The pros are that girls can have an equal chance at a good education and getting good grades, as boys can, but the con is that if the trend keeps increasing, boys may not have an equal chance because the girls will be surpassing them in academics, which I find ironic. Overall, I think that anti-sexism programs are NOT equivalent to feminist programs, and this is where the misconceptions arise. Girls, boys, women and men should all be equal in rights, but they should also be equal in their chances to compete for good grades, and not feel inferior.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"13961331","dateCreated":"1252043169","smartDate":"Sep 3, 2009","userCreated":{"username":"spluther","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/spluther","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/13961331"},"dateDigested":1532141304,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"The Two Poisons","description":"I was wholly surprised by the article's opening. the article seemed to support the gender-neutralization programs, which at first seemed like a novel idea. The statistics put the countries under such program in high light according to the "gender gap report". It would seem that system is ideal and advisable for all countries. This system is much preferred to the system of exploiting differences in the sexes.
\n Yet this system is reported to have different problems. The system does not neutralize gender, but become a pro-female society! I am not surprised by this - it seemed to good to be true. It is interesting to think of oppression in terms of female over male - something that is not normal. The fact that the children boys were actually being held down shows a great deal about the weaknesses of this now seemingly detestable system. The article mentions the obvious solution: do not hide gender differences, but use them to help promote children of different genders in their own ways.
\n But wait - didn't the world already try this? Is this solution not what is going one in America? As a result of this system, it is impossible to remove all gender restrictions on females. The entire idea has gone in a circle, from one failed system to another new, yet unsuccessful system and then right back to the old unsuccessful system. It might be arguable that both systems are not failing, but have equal success rates - but in different categories. As a result, countries who want to be progressive will have to pick between their two poisons: anti gender, or gender individuality.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"13961119","dateCreated":"1252041986","smartDate":"Sep 3, 2009","userCreated":{"username":"nipeltze","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/nipeltze","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/13961119"},"dateDigested":1532141304,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Ironic Anti-Sexism","description":"These anti-sexism program seems to be targeting children who are more impressionable than adults. The program's plan is to promote equality but it seems more pro-feminism rather than pro-equality. The program attempts to switch gender roles in hopes it will help eliminate anti-feminism. The American parents seem less willing to have thier children "switch roles." And it seems they teach their children traditionally at home, opposed to the teaching of the program. These sort os programs might help, yes, but new and more effective ideas that promote equality between the genders rather than just females should be thought up.

Yet, have they gone too far in shifting the dominant gender role from male to female? Throughout the article, Sara McGrath repeatedly said that women in Sweden outperformed men in many aspects. Yet, is this not the case in other countries such as the United States? If the outperformance of women in Sweden does in fact have a direct correlation with these switches in gender roles, does that mean that the males in Sweden are declining in performance? Although I disagree with having a country that seems extreme in its favoritism of women over men, I think it is refreshing to see a country that recognizes the prominent issue of gender roles in a society. Yet, men should not be penalized for the fact that they were born as males.
