It was disturbing to know about this happening in Hawaii and I can't believe that humans are capable of doing these things. At first human trafficking started off by selling slaves, but in this century, people are sold to prostitution. The fine for these initiators is incomparable to the acts that they have committed.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"61626002","dateCreated":"1362771226","smartDate":"Mar 8, 2013","userCreated":{"username":"kylieokamura","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/kylieokamura","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/61626002"},"dateDigested":1532140391,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Kylie's response","description":"I thought that this article was very disturbing and really opened my eyes to the reality of the community that we live in. Prior to reading this article, I was not aware that Hawaii is currently one of 5 states who hasn't passed a human trafficking state law. It's devastating and scary to know that we have little to no protection from this problem. This quote struck me the hardest of the whole article, "Without legislation, Hawaii will continue as an international hub for sex crimes. Young girls will be trafficked throughout Honolulu, and what was once a family-tourism destination will become a sex-tourism destination." After reading this article, I really hope that our government really takes action to help prevent and solve this growing problem.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"61625532","dateCreated":"1362768352","smartDate":"Mar 8, 2013","userCreated":{"username":"keoshita","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/keoshita","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/61625532"},"dateDigested":1532140391,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Kelis' Response","description":"While in down town I have seen prostitutes and my parents never allowed me to wait outside because of them. I am, however, surprised that Hawaii is one of five states that does not have a human trafficking law. It is a shame that Hawaii is not doing anything to help these children and women because these pimps and johns are harming physically and mentally. I feel that this is a black and white issue, and that there should be no sympathy for these pimps. The pimps have complete mental control over the women and the women don't think there is a way out. SO, they are obliged to do as the Pimps say. Yes, I have seen prostitutes on the streets in Hawaii, many of them. I have driven through the back streets of downtown where they all line the streets. Yes, I do think that women are naive to travel alone to a different country to find work because they are so alone and helpless. Although in a utopia there would be nothing wrong with what women are trying to do, in today's society it is very unrealistic to travel alone and be safe in an unknown place. I honestly do not know a completely safe way for women to flee from slavery because its so undercover that many people do not even realize what is going on in the world. They need to speak out to get help from others that they can trust. I think once the abuse has been done, like a scar it will always be with them. There is no truly escaping all the memories and truth of what happened to them. However, they can still forgive and try to move on with their futures.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"61622272","dateCreated":"1362726487","smartDate":"Mar 7, 2013","userCreated":{"username":"Madimada","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/Madimada","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/61622272"},"dateDigested":1532140392,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Madi's Response","description":"When I read this article I was very surprised to see that human trafficking occurred here in Hawaii, not that it is acceptable in other places. I think I have seen prostitutes in Hawaii before in China Town? But being a prostitute is not the same as human trafficking right? It is sad that girls are brought into this business at such a young age with no way out. In Hawaii, I sometimes see prostitutes late at night on Kuhio Avenue, and it is sad to think that sex trafficking is so prominent in Hawaii. When these women sell themselves, they are either willingly or unwilling allowing themselves to be treated as animals. It is also horrifying to think that while the women are being put into jail and juvenile detention centers, their pimps and John's are getting away unpunished and continuing their degrading crimes.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"61613842","dateCreated":"1362647074","smartDate":"Mar 7, 2013","userCreated":{"username":"Masalex","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/Masalex","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/61613842"},"dateDigested":1532140392,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Alex's Response","description":"When I read the article, I was completely surprised that sex trafficking even happens in Hawaii because either I've been oblivious to the fact that there are prostitutes out on the street or I just don't recognize one when I see one. I think the pimps and the John's control these women through violence and threats, otherwise i don't see why not the women don't just leave and get a different job. I think these women are definitely naive and don't know what they are getting themselves into when they travel to a foreign land to find work because I feel that people, at least in this country, know\/are aware and understand what sex trafficking is, unlike foreigners. I feel that people get into this type of work because they are promised something or are extremely desperate to make money. I think the women can recover slightly from this abuse, but not fully. They are mentally and physically scarred from this experience. To decrease sex trafficking, the issue must be addressed to the youth to prevent future problems from occurring.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"61613550","dateCreated":"1362639297","smartDate":"Mar 6, 2013","userCreated":{"username":"allau","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/allau","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/61613550"},"dateDigested":1532140392,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Alyssa's Response","description":"I was surprised that sex trafficking is legal in Hawaii! I think that "pimps" control these women by threats, and these women have to comply in order to be able live. It's sad because I think that these women will not be able to recover from this abuse. It must be traumatizing to be used for sex not just once, but multiple times. These women are so young! This experience will effect them forever. I think that lots of these women turn to drugs to cope with the experience. I think in order to stop sex trafficking in Hawaii there needs to be a law to make it illegal. I think that it continues and is starting to become a problem because it is still legal. I also think that the people who order these girls must be arrested and not the girls themselves.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]}],"more":true},"comments":[]},"http":{"code":200,"status":"OK"},"redirectUrl":null,"javascript":null,"notices":{"warning":[],"error":[],"info":[],"success":[]}}
