I could not have imagined being sold to a brothel or being pysically abused or being married off as an eleven year-old. It is heartbreaking to think women and girls around world are being treated this way.But then it is amazing to see these women turn such a negative and poor life into a positive and sucessful one for themselves and their familes. I t must be such an empowering moment for these women know they prove everyone who ever doubted them by becoming the sole providers of their families. All the people to beated her, took advantage of her and ridiculed her. These success stories were abosolutely incredible to read.

Through the triumps of strong women exibited in this article it is obvious that women are just as vauable as men. With that I definitely agree that aid given to countries afflicted by proverty should have more of a focus on education esspecially with girls. Educating girls could be the solution to the economic and social problems of these poor countries. Maybe with educational oppertunities, something that the women in this article did not have, other women and girls can create success stories of their owm. Possibly preventing abuse and the need for traficking. And most importantly, these educated and powerful women passing down their education to their children boy or girl. Ultimately leading to vast opportunities to sustain an living environment suitable for all of its family members and the opportunity for education for everyone.

The answer to the problems of those poor nations is no to end the thought of male dominance and give girls a shot at an education. We might be surprised.
The harsh circumstances that women are placed in around the world are very disturbing. I knew that in some countries women are treated much worse than men, but I had no clue about the degree of pain some suffered. For example, in Pakistan, Saima was treated as an object rather than a human being. She withstood daily beatings from her husband and verbal abuse from her mother-in-law. Not until she started a successful embroidery business from a small sixty-five dollar loan did she begin receiving humane treatment. Saima’s husband stopped beating her, and her mother-in-law discontinued talk of divorce. It is sad that Saima had to prove to be a powerful individual before being treated in a humane manner. Also, in India, Abbas Be was kidnapped to serve as a prostitute. She and seventy other girls were forced to watch a pimp torture and murder a girl for fighting off clients. An event in India known as “bride burning” takes place every two hours in which a wife dies for insignificant reasons such as a man wanting a new wife. Women should not be treated as worthless objects whose lives can be terminated for a minor offense.

If women are empowered globally, the economy can be successful. Saima accomplished so much with so little money and became the head of the household. If Saima can succeed, other women could do the same if given the opportunity. In other countries, women go over and beyond expectations to prove themselves to be as worthy as men. Women and men are equally capable of carrying out jobs. The economy would run more smoothly through the additional help of women. Throughout the world, women should be empowered and given the chance to thrive.

President Obama is attempting to help women globally, but there is always more that can be done. Money should be sent to foreign countries to pay for women’s scholarships to college. The United States could send troops as a security to protect women from atrocities such as “bride burnings.” Foreign countries need money to support women, but the United States has to make sure it is going to the right people.
My initial reaction to this article was complete shock. Although I knew that women through out the world were facing discrimination and abuse I never understood how poorly their conditions were. I knew that women were denied education and many girl babies were dying because of the discrimination against women, but I did not know the extremes of it all. For example, what really shocked me and hurt me the most to read was the young girls who were taken and locked in brothels and beaten with a cricket bat if they were to show any resistance. The thought of having to see a young girl being "stripped naked, hogtied, humiliated and mocked, beaten savagely and then stabbed in the stomach until she bled to death" just made me completely sick and heart wrenched. It just is so sad to hear that these are REAL situations happening to women all over the world. I could have been one of those girls if I was born in another country.

I understand that women are the key to poverty in the very poor countries. I believe this to be true because like Bill Gates said, they are basically wasting half of their population's intelligence. Women can do great things and with the initiative and drive they have to make their lives better, they will bring those countries out of poverty. Women in countries like India, China, Africa, unlike men, are more concerned for the welfare of their children and their grumbling stomachs than drinking beer. Like men, women have just as much potential to succeed.

I completely agree with projects for women because it will not only help the people of today, but also their posterity. It was more shocking that these have been ongoing crimes directed toward women, yet the rest of the world seemed to have just brushed it aside as unimportant or not worthy of being reported. However, this article shows that the current awareness and response to these injustices gives women, especially in these impoverished countries, hope and optimism for the future.

Empowering the women worldwide, as the article suggests, can initially help boost the economies in their own nations and then later positively affect the global economy. Definitely by empowering women and educating them helps the economy because they add to the work force, which enables a country to utilize their resources making production more efficient and thus either stabilizing or boosting the economy. Also, by empowering women, we are building the future generations because mother's tend to look after and care for their children a little better than fathers'. Also, the article implies that with more women, there will be less extreme violence and terrorism. Its sad that women and girls have been marginalized, parents and people looking at them more as a cost (pay for their health, food, clothes)than as a benefit. However, women have been steadily proving that they can definitely make a difference and that "they're the solution."

The United States has already established programs to aid these countries through different projects. I had never put them all together and actually considered what it would be like to live as a woman in a poor country where my life was threatened every single day. Empowering women around the world helps with education, healthcare, and helps increase the labor force. People are finding that they can get the most benefit from their aid dollars by helping women since they tend to spend their money on the family instead of wasting it at the bar or something else like the men do. Since many women are suppressed, there is lots of room for improvement in many of the poorer nations. I think the United States should decrease their donations that end up decreasing the incentive for poorer countries to work, but should concentrate more of that money on trying to help the people in poorer nations become able to work and live in safety. Proper hospitals, education, and capital for women's business ventures would seem like it would help the most.
After reading this article I was very shocked. It made me feel naive about things going on around the world because I had no idea that women like Saima, Abbas, and Tererai have had experiences like the ones written about in the article. Reading their stories also made me feel sad because of what happened to them, but happy and proud at the same time because they were able to overcome these difficulties and accomplished more than what they sought out to get. Each one of them also help others in the process of helping themselves, which was a good thing to see. I liked the statement that Bill Gates made in a conference in Saudi Arabia. He said that Saudi Arabia wasn't utilizing half of the talent in the country and the women's half of the room broke out in cheering and applause.

There are many advantages to empowering women globally. The one that I find most important is that they can influence others around them and make real contributions to the communities in which they live. Even if they inspire one other woman to stand up and change their situation, it will be worth it because it will be like a chain reaction.

I believe that the United States can play a huge role in this situation due to the fact that there are many American women who have high powered jobs and who provide for themselves. In most places in the United States, women are seen as equals. We can be an example to many women and men around the world because our system works. By having women and men equal in workplaces, others will see that having females in a work environment and having females in powerful positions is actually a benefit. I think that we should have a positive role in inspiring and influencing others to follow our lead.
The Women's Crusade" was at first, pure disgust at the way developing countries treat their women. I have personally never heard of Indian bride burning, and I have been too ignorant to learn of the massive sex trade in Asia. I cannot even express how disgusted I was, there really is no other word to describe the feeling. That, and just an overwhelming sense of shame because to read about women fighting to get an education when I complain about how much homework I have is so horrible, I just feel so undeserving. However, after the initial overpowering sickness, the rest of the article was truly inspiring. To finally see women recognized for the strong, capable human beings that, now formally stated, may actually be, do I dare suggest, better than men in some aspects. It made me proud to be a female, and the simple yet brilliant idea of focusing on those who want to learn and want to strive helping the whole world and economic situation is uplifting to read about.

I now understand that by helping women receive educations or some money to start a business, families thrive as well as women’s statuses are raised. I have heard that foreign aid up until now has been unhelpful in many parts of the world, and this article points the finger at men who throw the money away for alcohol and prostitutes rather than their families. After reading “The Women’s Crusade” the answer is so clear (I know, hindsight bias). Women’s maternal instincts, and let’s face it, more practical approaches will go towards feeding and caring for the household and the children. I am truly one hundred and twenty percent behind this new approach to ending world poverty while at the same time protecting and promoting women’s strengths and positions.

I know the US is in some hard times itself, but if it can spend so much for Iraq who I’m not even sure if they want us to help them, why would the US not help those who want the aid so badly? I know some will argue, and I partly stand with them, that the US cannot go around helping others if it cannot help itself. I don’t mean to say that the world’s problems are not as important or that the US economic situation takes precedence over women being mistreated, but it would be irresponsible for the US to focus too much on “putting out fires on its neighbors’ roofs while its own burns” as the Chinese say. However, by helping women rise in society, not only are we fighting poverty and abuse of women, the article also mentioned terrorism is less likely if more women are educated and the testosterone is balanced. Therefore, I suggest perhaps using some of the money the US keeps for national security to help these women. Plus, if I remember correctly, after 9/11, a whole ton of money goes into protecting the United States. It will be dually stopping terrorism (its original purpose) as well as helping women and developing countries in general. In that way, Americans cannot complain that we are using money on helping others without helping ourselves, and yet they cannot complain that we are indifferent to the global suffering of others.
Upon reading this article I had two separate and distinct feelings in my inner gut. The first reflects upon the atrocities that were committed. The latter feeling emanates from simple inspiration. I never knew true horrors like this were such a prevalent problem in other countries. I knew I was sheltered, but I never knew I was this sheltered. Possibly the saddest part of the facts in this article is that these types of immoral actions are only the tip of the iceberg. However, these heinous crimes were only a small part of the article. The way she overcame the strife was truly amazing. With a mere $65 loan she was able to turn her life around. That definitely takes resourcefulness. It is somewhat humorous how her husband has learned to respect her. However, at the same time it is important to note that against the odds she was able to surpass him economically. She proves to these close minded societies that women are definitely equipped with enough prowess to shine above man. The fact that she even started her own business is inspiring because most people would have given up after being beat almost daily let alone ridiculed by their own family members. The emotional scarring of such acts are not mere trifles. There are many advantages to empowering women globally. Rather than lame a women, why not allow them to have more power when they clearly are as capable as men. I think that the world should realize that women can and will prove that empowering them is only to mankinds benefit. Although it would be a good thing for all women to have rights, I do not feel that the United States of America should directly intervene in the rights of women around the world. At this moment in time, the tensions between nations is growing, and the United States' display of power will definitely not ease the tensions. If anything at all, maybe the United States could use the media to uncover the immorality of the lack of women's rights throughout the world. There have been many news specials talking about women's rights. I do not feel that it is the United States' responsibility to take up the White Man's Burden and help these other countries with their problems. History shows that the hearts of mankind are full of deceipt and lies. If the United States does try to help another country, there will be an underlying cause such as an interest in oil. This would be similar to Great Britain's role in Iran's old government. The government of Iran is still in turmoil today. I think that taking a risk and intervening more into foreign affairs will simply run the risk of making the United States more enemies. George Washington's Farewell Address warns the United States not to get too caught up in foreign affairs. I think he was right because the world is definitely connected with all the technology that exists in the world. The media plays a big enough role in society because it effects the mindset of the people. If the media could cause us to withdraw from the war with Vietnam, then I am sure that the media can expose the injustice of women's rights in these foreign countries without getting the United States government directly involved.
I'm speechless. Honestly, my mind is spinning in circles as I try to make sense of this article. I'll be honest; I didn't expect a woman's life to be SO humiliating, difficult, and ridden with poverty. I couldn't help but squirm in my seat reading the horrible stories of the young women beaten, criticized, and left to die. The most powerful and frightening story was of Abbas Be, because she had to visually see someone like herself being stabbed to death for disobedience. I'm happy she is now a skilled bookbinder. The most moving story was of Saima Muhammad. I'm proud of her for being able to seek help when she needed and eventually started her own business.

I didnt see educating women, or more like having more women in the world, would make as much of a difference as this article says. Women play important roles in the world. With education, women can work jobs men cannot (or as easily) and bear children. The United States should make an effort to support these women and girls around the world to gain the education they need for life.

I have to say though, I dont think it's fair to punish the men for everything either. The article blames men for unwise spending on alcohol, prostitutes, or lavish things. "Men are to blame for rape, beatings, abuse, death to women." I'm not sure what else to blame, but men isn't the only problem.

That one word basically sums up my reaction to the article.

You hear about the discrimination women used to face and how they overcame it. My mom constantly reminds me of the reason she became a doctor. She was interning at a hospital and a man asked her if she was training to become a nurse and my mom immediately replied "no, i want to be a doctor." She had never considered being a doctor but the fact that the man assumed that because she was a female she would be a nurse made her want to prove him wrong. Those are stories we hear about in the past but i had no idea discrimination against women was still so severe today. What striked me most was the story of the girls going to school. It said that when girls started to menstruate they would skip school, so people decided to help them out by providing them with sanitary napkins and bathrooms. I was shocked to learn that girls originally didn't have simple luxuries like sanitary napkins or a bathroom. Things that I take for granted and assumed everyone else did as well.

Empowering women is definitely important to the development of our society. As it stated in the article, when Saima started her embroidery business, people started to respect her. Now that she was generating the highest income in the family, her husband stopped beating her and instead she started ordering him. It said that when men make money it is usually spent on tobacco and alcohol whereas when a woman makes money it is used for more useful things like children's education and food to feed the family. I think this is probably because women often don't acquire the income for a family. It is thought that a woman works much harder for money since it hardly ever happens, therefore the money is used for much more valuable purposes.

As citizens of the United States, we generally have more than people in developing countries. We are generally more wealthy and better educated. As the old proverb states, if you give a man a fish you feed him for a day, if you teach a man to fish you feed him for life. Giving these people in need material goods will help them for the time being but if we teach them how to acquire goods themselves we help them for life. If we help women like Saima start small businesses they can generate an income and support their family.

I read this article during my free sitting in the library carrel.
