I thought it was super interesting how the men wanted to stop gay and lesbians by raping them. It was shocking to know that people would actually try to do that to someone. The police officers and government obviously does not hold their own and the system is corrupt. It was horrible to know that people are scared to trust officers because they're scared they'll be raped by them too. It was disturbing to know that some people would actually whip out their stuff to people and threaten them with it. I think that in order to save this society, they will have to be educated.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"47841444","dateCreated":"1323370379","smartDate":"Dec 8, 2011","userCreated":{"username":"Ericaa21","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/Ericaa21","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/47841444"},"dateDigested":1532141255,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Erica's response","description":"When i read this article i was not so much shocked (because so many awful things happen to women in this part of the world) as I was sad. It is so sad that these people do not feel that they can express themselves or even be themselves because they will be raped and hurt. It is so sad that the abuse they recieve is viewed as being normal and that the officials who do it have no punishment. Reading the story about the girl who was raped four times to be shown she was a woman was awful and I wish we could do something to help them and give them a sort of refuge.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"47838226","dateCreated":"1323368808","smartDate":"Dec 8, 2011","userCreated":{"username":"Adriann28","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/Adriann28","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/47838226"},"dateDigested":1532141255,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Adrian's Response","description":"It was very disturbing to learn that homosexuals are in so much danger in South Africa. Here in America there are many stereotypes against homosexuals but not nearly as much violence. The most disturbing part of the article to me was the stories told by victims at the end. I was disgusted when I read Puleng's comment about her experience. She stated that she got raped by four men while walking back from a club. But the part that is the most upsetting is what they said to her. They said they raped her just to show her she was a woman. I think that this problem will be extremely hard to fix because it is a concept so deeply rooted in their culture.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"47808582","dateCreated":"1323336870","smartDate":"Dec 8, 2011","userCreated":{"username":"catchu909","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/catchu909","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/pic\/1317882302\/catchu909-lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/47808582"},"dateDigested":1532141255,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Catherine's Post","description":"This article made me completely speechless. People have fought hard for gay rights throughout history, hoping that one day the world will accept them for who they are. In a democratic nation such as the United States, the voices of those people who supported gay\/lesbian rights have finally been heard in the past few years. Just recently, several states have legalized gay marriage. Why is it that in South Africa, people have to view people who love others of the same gender with scorn and disdain? Why do the people of this country have to cower in fear about their sexuality?
\nIt's horrifying and heartbreaking that people will go to such great lengths such as rape or murder to display their prejudice towards homosexuals. Homosexuality has always been a touchy subject, whether in a social surrounding or in private. I believe that when people are born, they do not have a choice of whether they want to like people of the opposite gender or those of the same gender. In the article, there were incidents of men raping lesbian women because they thought that it was what they "needed". It's disgusting that men would target these women and make them feel more ashamed of themselves than society already does. There was another story in the article that was enraging. Tanesha, a 13 year old girl was called a derogatory term (stabane) by one of her classmates. Not only did her principal say that stabane will not go to heaven, her teacher tried to chase her out of the classroom because she would not teach a stabane. Parents and teachers are supposed to be the people who guide a child through their childhood years. In Tanesha's case, the adults surrounding her (excluding her parents) are showing her hatred and scorn. They are not supportive at all and their actions will be the reason behind her emotional scars in the future. Religious issues were raised in the article as well. Tendai, a 28 year old girl was forced to have a boyfriend because the "church made her accept Jesus" and they said that she was "demonized but now she was saved." If Christians believe that God created everyone equally, then why are homosexuals treated any differently? They don't look look different from the rest of us. They don't act differently either. Why should it matter that their preferences differ from what is accepted as the "social norm"? No one has a right to judge them.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"47807920","dateCreated":"1323333623","smartDate":"Dec 8, 2011","userCreated":{"username":"xoxomika","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/xoxomika","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/47807920"},"dateDigested":1532141255,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Mika's Response","description":"I think it's absolutely horrible that lesbians, homosexuals, bisexuals, and transgendered persons in South Africa are being discriminated against. I feel that it is almost unrealistic that they are being treated differently regarding law enforcements. It is absolutely unacceptable that police personnels actually make fun, ridicule, and harass those who come to them for help. It almost seems like a bad horror story. I think it's weird how men in the neighborhood rape lesbian women because of their sexual orientation. I think it's because they feel that lesbians are looked down upon so much, that men want to exert power over them to remind them that they are people of the lowest class. I thought it was terrible how a lesbian woman was brutally raped by multiple men. Their reason was "to remind her that she is a woman". I think the discrimination against lesbians especially need to stop. I thought it was also terrible how even teachers, the people who are supposed to set examples for the students, say that if they gave birth to a stabane (hermaphrodite), they would kill it. They would also refuse to teach any student who is a stabane. I think that people in Africa need to be more accepting of homosexuals, and need to empathize how they would feel if they were in their position. I feel that men need to be more accepting than women because the men are the people who are actually doing something to prevent the increase of lesbians in their society. I think that everyone needs to be accepting of others in their community, regardless of their sexual orientation.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"47783220","dateCreated":"1323299434","smartDate":"Dec 7, 2011","userCreated":{"username":"marinahirokane","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/marinahirokane","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/47783220"},"dateDigested":1532141255,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Marina's Response","description":"When reading this article, I found it disturbing that men think that women must be with a man. Especially the additional comments ont he bottom about how these women were raped and forced to believe that they shoudl be wtih a man. I think that someone should not have to be forced to be with someone of the opposite gender if they don't want to be. I think we are lucky to live in a country where being gay, lesbian or transgender is not as harshly judged as in other places. Although these do cause problems around the world and in the US, I think that it is important that we accept others for who they are. If I were these women, I would be frightened, and emotionally scarred for life if I were raped because someone did not like the way I was as a person. The thinking behind this is absurd. I feel like it is more difficult for women to stand up for themselves because of the culture that the South Africans live in. Here we are in America, arguing over the legalities of gay and lesbian marriages while in Africa, these people aren't only not allowed to be married but suffer from extreme discrimination and abuse. I realize that in America homosexuality is not exactly welcomed with open arms, but at least things are changing. Protest movements as well as mainstream television series have begun promoting the acceptance of homosexuals. In South America these people suffer from vulgar verbal and physical abuse. I thought the witness accounts that explained how discriminatory teachers are, and the explicit things people say to lesbians in public were terrible. It is good that there are rights in place for homosexuals, but it is now time to enforce these policies. I also wonder why gay men don't seem to receive as much grief as lesbian women do, unless it is just not covered in this article.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]}],"more":false},"comments":[]},"http":{"code":200,"status":"OK"},"redirectUrl":null,"javascript":null,"notices":{"warning":[],"error":[],"info":[],"success":[]}}
