First of all, I didn't even know it was possible for a girl to be circumcised and whenever i hear the word its something that i would automatically associate with males and a surgery that has to do woth their reproductive organ. One question I have is: Why would the parents still carry out the surgery if they know how painful and scarring (physically and mentally) it can be for their child?!","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"46003098","dateCreated":"1320910004","smartDate":"Nov 9, 2011","userCreated":{"username":"tatortakahashi","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/tatortakahashi","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/46003098"},"dateDigested":1532141265,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Kasey's Response","description":"While reading this article, is at here in my seat cringing at the thought of female circumcision. The worst part, is that there aren't any medication used during the operation and the tools are inadequate. It is really easy to see the double standard between men and women in this society because women are not allowed to experience sexual pleasures. Also sexual intercourse feels good for men but on hurts the women in this culture. Once again this is a hard topic to try and fix because it is a cultural belief deeply rooted in the minds of these people. Education could probably help but this will probably only anger the men or the people will pay no attention to the information because they believe so strongly in female circumcision. lastly, i think the thought of this is kind of gross and unacceptable since the women feel like they have to do this operation to become a women.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"45994292","dateCreated":"1320892908","smartDate":"Nov 9, 2011","userCreated":{"username":"nikaidoL","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/nikaidoL","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/45994292"},"dateDigested":1532141265,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Lauren's Post","description":"I wasn't too shocked about reading this article, I have heard about the circumcision of women before and as before I think it is disturbing, how people can put so much pain on something super sensitive to girls. I really don't like how it's part of a persons culture to do this. I understand that culture is a necessity to a person, but some cultures that hurt or traumatize young girls emotionally, physically, and mentally I just don't understand that. I also don't appreciate how the fathers of the young girls can accept this trauma to their seven year old daughters. They actually want that to happen to their daughters, or else they won't be able to marry, and the father doesn't get the marriage gifts. How selfish of there own family members.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"45980072","dateCreated":"1320880745","smartDate":"Nov 9, 2011","userCreated":{"username":"Adriann28","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/Adriann28","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/45980072"},"dateDigested":1532141265,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Adrian's Post","description":"I found the idea of these women being forced in to circumcision completely horrifying. I am always shocked at the practices and beliefs of other cultures because they are so different than what I am used too, but this practice seems over the top. It is so saddening to hear that these women have to endure so much pain. Even in many everyday activities such as using the bathroom. The article really shows the dominance men have over women. Women have to be put through so much pain in attempt to make sex more pleasurable for their male partner. Unlike in America, women do not have many rights in Africa, and they are forced to do the chores that men want them to do.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"45974942","dateCreated":"1320877542","smartDate":"Nov 9, 2011","userCreated":{"username":"cakagawa","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/cakagawa","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/45974942"},"dateDigested":1532141265,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Cara's Resonse","description":"I've heard of this before. I was surprised to find out that there are so many complications to mutilating women. The fact that women have to go through so much pain to be included into society was horrible. Women have to degrade themselves for men to be better than them. It proves that many women are okay with being submissive to men. I thought it was horrible to know that these women were prone to infection and death, but they still wanted to go through with it. I was devastated to find out that some even look forward to their day of surgery. I think that if they had better surgical tools and medical practices, maybe the procedure would be accepted more into society. With the sharper surgical tools and medical devices such as medication to ease the pain, women would have a lower death rate.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"45964954","dateCreated":"1320871028","smartDate":"Nov 9, 2011","userCreated":{"username":"miki10","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/miki10","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/45964954"},"dateDigested":1532141265,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Miki's Response","description":"I was completely shocked after reading this post becaue, first of all, I did not even know that women could be circumcised. I can not bear to live with the fact that young girls, everyday, get circumsized because of their parents and culture. I can understand young girls do it because of their culture, but I can not understand why the parents will allow it. Just like the article said, is it not the parents job to protect the child and not to deform your child? These girls and women go through so much pain and of recieving this surgery and I again, I can not believe how painful this must be. I know that a lot of men get circumsised but it is different for women because men and can still have sexual intercourses without pain. These women have to live everyday with pain while men can just walk around freely. i do not understand why parents, or jsut the women themselves, would want to put themselves through this pain. I hope that in the future the number of cirucumsised women in Africa can decrease so they will not have to live everyday with this unbearable pain.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"45910982","dateCreated":"1320826891","smartDate":"Nov 9, 2011","userCreated":{"username":"Careesebr","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/Careesebr","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/45910982"},"dateDigested":1532141265,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Careese's Response","description":"I was honestly shocked while I was reading this article, and after when I let what I just read digest, I was sick to the stomach. How can this be a tradition? I don't even want to know half of the pain these women go through. I think it is amazing that these women do endure this much pain just for a tradition. I think that this shows the women's loyalty to her family, however, I do agree that it also shows the domination of women. Hopefully with time, these cruel traditions will come to an end. I can't begin to image what pain these women suffer and have to go through during and even after the circumcision. I don't understand why this tradition is still in effect if there are so many health problems caused from circumcision. To have pain while using the bathroom is ridiculous. If women can't even use the bathroom without being in pain they need to stop this tradition. I do agree that the reason that women get circumcised is to show domination over women. What really shocked me was that women need to go through this again once they have sex or give birth. But what I thought was really awful was when I read that when the women give birth the man cuts them open. I don't understand why people think its okay to keep torturing women like that. Especially since so many girls get circumcised when they are only 7 years old. I personally think its just stupid that men think that women do not deserve to have pleasure while having sex. Its so selfish that guys in that culture believe that.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"45908520","dateCreated":"1320819802","smartDate":"Nov 8, 2011","userCreated":{"username":"Kekuroda","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/Kekuroda","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/45908520"},"dateDigested":1532141266,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Kelsey's Response","description":"I was disgusted to learn about women circumcision existing in so many places around the world today. What was most disturbing was that these uneducated and inexperienced people were performing the circumcisions on girls younger than seven years old. That is not right. I agree with Anela that if women circumcision is only continued to force women to be inferior to men is ridiculous. Circumcision for men and women are completely different however they must experience similar pain. Unfortunately these women experience life threatening diseases and mutation. But if the men in these countries understand how painful it is and the consequences, then why do they continue to do force women to do it? I don't understand how women circumcision is beneficial to men or women. This article makes me grateful for where we live. I cant immagine how painful that must be. I think theres a thin line between tradition and morals. Becuase this article is proof that these peoples morals are messed up but its over looked because its tradition. I mean you learn all your morals from your traditions, so being brought up with something like women circumcition is like how men are circumcized. However, the health risk that women face is far more greater than men and men have the option to get circumcized while women dont. I think the people who practice this tradition dont really know or completely understand the kind of risk their putting their daughters in. They probably think everyone is doing the same thing as them; thats its a normal coming of age ritual all over the world. Then in the article, it said this is done to women so that when they get married their husband has an increase in sexual pleassure. That the women arent supposed to feel that kind of "sensation", their supposed to feel pain. I honestly believe that some random man started this tradition just so he could have better sex. With the way the article out it, it sure does sound that way. And for a solution, now thats difficult to answer. There may not be any because its not in anyones power to take away someone esles tradition. Its just not possible. Yes, theres always the source of education but that will not completely eliminate the tradition, it might reduce is but not eliminate.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]}],"more":true},"comments":[]},"http":{"code":200,"status":"OK"},"redirectUrl":null,"javascript":null,"notices":{"warning":[],"error":[],"info":[],"success":[]}}
