And the ration between male and female casters. I feel like it is wrong on so many levels and that, women don't have the physical attributes to compete with men so they have to make it up somewhere and with men overwhelming women in other things like new broadcasting I think is unfair. People in general shouldn't look to much into this factor of gender inequality however be aware that it is happening right in front of our eyes on our own television screens.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"51501684","dateCreated":"1331287046","smartDate":"Mar 9, 2012","userCreated":{"username":"biancabystrompino","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/biancabystrompino","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/51501684"},"dateDigested":1532140444,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Bianca's Response ","description":"This article relates to the male gaze that we learned about in class. However, this article really gets down to the nitty gritty and talks about specific statistics of women and men portrayed in the media. It's shocking to see that women aren't apart of the media as much as men are because it doesn't seem that way to the naked eye. Although I do believe that the statistics are true because gender equality will always be an issue throughout our world. It's hard to change something that has been going on since our world was created. Yes, it is unfortunate for women and I'm glad to see that there is a change but it's gonna take even longer for women to be completely equal to men not only in the media but throughout every aspect of life.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"51461810","dateCreated":"1331226982","smartDate":"Mar 8, 2012","userCreated":{"username":"raveym","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/raveym","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/51461810"},"dateDigested":1532140444,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Raven's Response","description":"The Global Media Monitoring Project (GMMP) works hard to find statistics about gender in media. Unfortunately, the statistics show that media is a male dominated field. The report showed that only 24% of the people we hear about in television, radio, and print are female. I found this very interesting. I expeted it to be higher, but maybe that's because I am a woman. That got me thinking, do we mentally just focus on news about people of the same gender as ourselves? I do not know how to answer this question yet, but I hope that women in media as well as the world will balance out with the currently male dominated version.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"51443542","dateCreated":"1331194984","smartDate":"Mar 8, 2012","userCreated":{"username":"nickisilva808","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/nickisilva808","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/pic\/1337203052\/nickisilva808-lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/51443542"},"dateDigested":1532140444,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Nicki's Response","description":"This article was not a shock to me, because its fairly obvious that men control and appear more in the media. As a topic frequently discussed already, if women ever appear in the media, they are portrayed as sex symbols, and come across as sexual. I think that it is an abuse of power, and is ultimately very unfortunate that women are portrayed that way. Because the media has such a large impact on women and how society portrays the "ideal" women, makes other women fit to that standard. Which results in anorexia, bulimia, and suicide, because these women feel they cannot live up to those expectations. However, there are some cases, where the media does not always use women as a sex symbol. I believe that each person is beautiful the way they are, and its just very sad how the media has such a power impact on how women are viewed.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"51443330","dateCreated":"1331193782","smartDate":"Mar 8, 2012","userCreated":{"username":"tlau808","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/tlau808","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/51443330"},"dateDigested":1532140444,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Taylor's Response","description":"This article was very interesting. I new that the media favored male athletics, and male stories, but it was informing to see actual numbers and statistics of the men to women ratio in our media. My final topic has to do with men's basketball and its popularity which far surpasses women's basketball. This article helps give me more knowledge on that topic. I think that because media is a large part of our lives we don't notice the off set proportions of men to women air time. However by looking at these statistics it is easy to see the there is favoritism towards the males. There are a couple reasons why i think that males get more air time than females. The first is that men sports, for example, have been around much longer that female sports. People have grown up in a male dominated world and therefore want to see more male presence in the media. The second reason is that male stories are more exciting. Physically men can do many things that women cannot. going back to the basketball example, a men's basketball game is way more exciting than a women's game, as is seen in the crowd size. The overwhelming amount of male media compared to female media must be fixed. I think that tv shows and other medias need to find new ways to make people interested in female shows and sports.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"51442644","dateCreated":"1331189527","smartDate":"Mar 7, 2012","userCreated":{"username":"esarslan","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/esarslan","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/51442644"},"dateDigested":1532140445,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Esma's Response","description":"The current event goes over statistics that the GMMP, Global Media Monitoring Project, has gathered every five years since 1995. The statistics highlight the fact that women have been strongly under represented in the media all over the world. If we thought that America was the land of equality, then we need to think again. Even though the numbers for women have slightly improved, there is still an incredibly large gap between male and female representation.
\nPersonally, I am shocked. I never knew the media was so biased against women. It's almost as if they are against us, like they are trying to hold us down and control how we act and what we say and how much the world gets to see of us. This is unfair to any women who has ever worked in the media business. These statistics prove how flawed our society is and it also proves that these biases go back a long time. Prejudices like this are not made over a couple years. They are a culmination of decades of trying to suppress women in their roles in this world. Is it so difficult for men to accept that women exist in our society? Keeping us at home is not going to stop us. You can't silence half the population of the world. It just goes to show that you can NEVER trust the media.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]}],"more":true},"comments":[]},"http":{"code":200,"status":"OK"},"redirectUrl":null,"javascript":null,"notices":{"warning":[],"error":[],"info":[],"success":[]}}
