The idea that the French government could make a law forbidding women from wearing pants and that this law is still around even if it isn't really forced is crazy. I guess this article shows how much we as American's take for granted because we don't have a government the controls every aspect of our lives. I think at the time this law was created they were trying to show that the government was still in control and that rebellion wouldn't work, but there is no reason it should have still been around. There should not be laws about what people wear. The clothing a person wears is a type of expression and everyone should have the right to express themselves. I even think cross dressing isn't really a big deal if that's how a person wants to express themselves let them. On the same note as clothing being a form of expression, I think how you dress does have an affect on how masculine or feminine you are. That is why we have the terms tom boy and girly girl. Because how you dress affects how people look at you.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"61417328","dateCreated":"1360277552","smartDate":"Feb 7, 2013","userCreated":{"username":"kylieokamura","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/kylieokamura","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/61417328"},"dateDigested":1532140448,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Kylie's response","description":"I think that this article was very interesting, informational, and worth reading. I think that this law about women in Paris not being able to wear pants should have been removed sooner because it is only fair to women, to show their equality to men. I think that the government would hang to control what women wear because status and equality is easily expressed through clothing, and maybe they are afraid that women would take advantage of that privilege. However, I personally don't think that it is okay for there to be laws regarding what people wear because I think that everyone should be able to wear anything that they want, as it is a way to express yourself and your beliefs. I think that cross dressing can be offensive if it is done as a joke, but if it is truly how you believe you want to express yourself and your personally, then I think it is acceptable. I think that what you wear is a factor in your masculinity or femininity because you can show either one of these traits through what you wear, and make sure that you don't dress like the other one.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"61416152","dateCreated":"1360270451","smartDate":"Feb 7, 2013","userCreated":{"username":"dapascua","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/dapascua","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/61416152"},"dateDigested":1532140449,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"kama's response","description":"I think it is good that they took away this law because everyone should have the chance to be free to do what they want and wear what they want. Clothes do not express power but it does portray a person's individuality. Cross dressing is questionable because to the society girls wearing guys clothes is totally fine but when guys wear girls clothes they are portrayed as being gay. Clothes do portray masculinity and femininity but it depends on who the person is. Although Europe and the United States may have different culture barriers regarding clothing this article was eye opening to how big this difference really is. It doesn't really make sense to me as to why wearing pants would be such a big deal in France, especially since pants doesn't expose legs. I don't feel that pants are masculine either. If anything, they are a conservative type of clothing. I'm thinking the government wanted to control what women wear because they want power. I don't think that it is right though to make a law against what people are allowed to wear. I feel that people should be free to express themselves by the way they want to dress. It makes me wonder if the French men have a law against dressing a certain way as well. I'm just glad that someone like Najat spoke out and was finally able to get the government to repeal the law. Cross dressing can be both offensive and acceptable in our society. To me, it's not a big issue and people shouldn't be judged or questioned about their femininity\/masculinity by the way they dress.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"61409072","dateCreated":"1360221764","smartDate":"Feb 6, 2013","userCreated":{"username":"andrewoki","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/andrewoki","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/61409072"},"dateDigested":1532140449,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Andrew's Response","description":"When I first read this I knew that immediately there would be negative reactions to why the government made it a law for women to have permission to wear shorts. But, I tried to look at it from the other point of view, like why would anyone make this type of rule in the first place? I thought of Arabic women and how they completely cover their skin and hair as a choice of religion. But then again, it is their choice. Government should not force women to cover their legs and not wear shorts. I think clothing in public should be enforced because
\nnot everyone wants to see other people private parts. I'm surprised that law was in effect for so long, I would think that women would have fought for it to be changed along time ago. I think it was quite necessary that the law was changed because I feel like the government could have taken advantage of women more in the future. What if they wanted to make more restrictions?
