I don't understand why the people in Uganda ar so afraid of homosexuals, and it shocks me that they would go through such lengths like these just to get them out. The death penalty is a huge step in the wrong direction I think. usually the death penalty is used in cases of a person committing unforgivable crimes, but since when is being homosexual a crime in itself? Unfortunately the United States isn't much bettere regarding this issue and thats a big reason why they're not doing anything about it but I think someone needs to step in and do something because what the people in uganda are doing is a crime against humanity
This article was shocking and not something that should be taken lightly. I don't think that the US feels like it is in their right to intervene, but the US does tend to gtet involved in a lot of international affairs. If th US were to get involved, it could have repercussions back in the states at home or elsewhere throughout the world. THe US serves as a leading nation and by intervening, they'd be sending a message to other nations that meddling in international affairs is okay. I think that the US ministry visit led to the death penalty because the government wants to assert power over the people and power over Americans. I don't think that Africa should be able to do this to families because it is penalizing them about something that isn't in their control. I think the rationale behind this has to do with the country's background and cultural beliefs. Image is important and mainintaing a strong image is crucial to remaina powerful amongst other nations. The situation in Uganda seems unfair and cruel, but I feel is we want to help we need to target the people of their nation and bringing up awareness of gayness. Seriously? I think the US missionaries had the right idea in mind, but didn't realize how out of hand this could get. Maybe they really DO aim to get rid of all gays; we don't know. Places such as Africa see other countries (not necessarily successful ones) as above them, and especially for the US, everything that they do, they want to copy and make better. The US missionaries' ideas were seen as models for an already "successful" plan, and the Africans just wanted to better it. Because of the way the US is, I don't think there is much that can be done about the situation. The US is covered by their rights, but the rights of Africans are in the hands of their own government. Personally, I think intervention would make the situation even worse, because it would only seem like we are contradicting ourselves, and the situation could heighten in ways unimaginable. It's not fair that homosexuals are treated this way; imagine if a gay radical group went around killing straight people for being straight. There would be an outrage. Now if the situation is flipped, all of a sudden nothing is wrong and it becomes a real-life conflict? It just doesn't seem fair. I think the Africans themselves need to speak out. Maybe risk all they have. If it's a cause worth fighting for, then they will find a way to make it happen. Fate doesn't lie.
Gay people do not deserve the death penalty. The Ugandan government is simply trying to suppress the gay community from coming forward. Instead of solving their "problem" of gays, they are going to create an uprising. In addition, family members and landlords shouldn't be threatened to turn gay people in. They have nothing to do with people's sexual preference, and shouldn't be punished for it. Other nations need to step up and condemn Uganda for even considering to pass this bill. It is an outrage, and honestly, this is not an area that a government should be able to have power over. Gays deserve to have the same rights as straight people. Let people love whoever they want without question. It is their life to live, so let them live it how they want to. I mean, would you want someone to dictate who you can date without being killed? I don't think anyone would, so let's end this craziness once and for all.
Just when I thought that everyone was becoming more accepting of the gay community, I read this. I was appalled that any government would even want to pass a bill like this. Beating and arresting people because of their sexuality is bad enough, but to even think about wanting to pass a bill that would put someone to death and punishing that person's family because of an individual's sexuality is just going way too far; it's far pass the line of bad and horrendous. I think that it takes a lot for anyone, let alone a man, to come out and admit that they are gay. But punishing that person for getting the courage to be honest about themselves is uncalled for.

And really... having therapy called in for gays in order to make them heterosexual just makes the entire situation worse.

I don't think that there is anything that the US government can do to prevent people from going to Uganda and try to make the gays there heterosexual. And if there is something the US government can do, I don't see why they would want to. The US doesn't condone gays here in the US, so why do it in another country?? I think that it shows a bad image of the US if our country is, in general, open to homosexuality, but would be willing to go to another country and intervene with one's life in this matter.

And why the Ugandan government would go as far as the death penalty for homosexuality, is just one of those things in life that no one will ever understand, except for those who are actually involved with the decision process.

I think that the only way for the Ugandan government to realize what a bad idea this is, is for this to affect one of them or one of their family members. If it affects them personally, I think that they would be able to see the matter from a new light, and realize what a bad decision it is not only to punish someone for being a homosexual, but also punish their families and friends.
This article was absolutely shocking. Although many of us know how major the issue of homosexuals is in our world today, I do not think we realized how seriously people are against it. The fact that people have this much hatred for difference is appalling. I was surprised that there are people who feel it is so terrible that the homosexuals must be killed in order to solve the problem. But this will not do anything but create even more hatred in the world. It seems that in our societies we are always looking for a group of people to diminish in the society. In the past we have seen similar acts of violence with blacks, jewish, and different religions. I really believe that people must start to teach their children to accept others that are different from themselves. Things such as gender, ethnicity, and religion you cannot change about a person it is who they are and were raised as. This issue in particular is argued many times under the words of the bible. Homosexuals are thought to be sinners and god does not love them, they are not worth anything. The truth really is no person knows who god loves and therefore we are no judges of this. Just as straights cant change to being homosexuals, homosexuals do not have the power to switch their preference, it is an inherent part of who they are. And no one should be punished for being themselves.
I don't think the Uganda government should impose the law of death penalty or imprisonment to homosexual and the people who support them. Unlike murderers or thieves, I don't see any harms that gay people can bring to the society. It is individual's right to love whom ever they want. I think the United State should definitely intervene in this matter but not in a forceful way. America can negotiate and suggest other solutions to the problem of homosexuals in Uganda. Yet, America isn't doing anything about this because America won't get any benefits from this intervention, and plus, a lot of Americans are still conservative about gay issues as well. I find it pretty disappointing that as a nation that claims to be the most openly free and forward in ideas, America won't help the homosexuals in gaining their equality. It is interesting how Uganda prose the death penalty after the visit of US ministries. Maybe the US ministries encourage Uganda to enforce the death penalty to see if this will work out in eliminating homosexuals so that one day the US can also have similar measures against gay people. However, I don't think people can control themselves from not being gays or lesbians. Biological and environmental influences cause people to have different sexual orientation, and this is clearly not a crime that should be punished. As a more traditional based nation, Uganda government may only see that heterosexuality are the only natural or right relationship. The only way to stop this is for US to intervene or the Uganda people, not just the homosexuals but also the heterosexuals, to stand up against the law.
I completely understand the harsh discrimination that is presented in this horrible event. However and quite unfortunately, having been educated in a great school, I am also aware of the graver consequences of another United States intervention. As the article and Mackenzie explicitly stated, the probable cause of the unfortunate situation is the intervention of US conservative Christian ministries, keyword: “intervention.” Therefore, I believe that any direct efforts by the United States and maybe even any other foreign nation will simply exacerbate the situation. Any attempts to regulate another nation’s customs usually lead to more complications, then to war, then to graver punishments to the particular group.

Regarding whether or not Africa should be able to do this, the most obvious answer is NO! But then again, I am strong towards this position because of 18 years of upbringing in a free nation, and 18 years of education on equality. Therefore, one can not fully blame the Uganda administration or people for having this rational. I believe the blame should be put on the US ministries. Don’t get me wrong, I am not opposed to religion (I am actually Catholic—beat that!) But, these particular groups should be more careful in what they are teaching. On top of that, the family, friends, or the landlord, who do not let the authorities know that someone is gay, may be arrested and put in jail for seven years. That is insanity. A family member or friend cannot even help or support through a rough time. If they think they are extinguishing the problem by killing them, it will only make a bigger problem. Another problem in the US is that US conservative Christian ministries try to change homosexuals to become heterosexual through therapy.
