This article has really made me realize how dress is a major factor in gender identity. And how recent fashion trends haves shown a convergence between the two genders.

I certainly think that cross-dressing has become less of a taboo and more of a norm. You do not commonly see men dressing in skirts and high-heels on the street everyday but there are fashions that show women are taking common trends of men and vise versa. For example, women can buy “boyfriend” cut jeans or wear the classic men’s white long-sleeve collared shirt and pair that with a belt at the waist. And as mentioned in the article it is not uncommon to see men wearing eyeliner, or a pair of tight skinny jeans, or painted fingernails. It is because of the media men and women would consider any type of fashion trend.

I would like to think that “gender blending” is the answer to gender equality; however, I think that it will be a edgy fashion trend until it begins to fade like most other fashion trend. Clothing companies will continue to create new designs and persuade the public of new trends in order to keep people buying more.

I think that in some ways gender neutral clothes can represent a sense of equality. Men and women would be able to shop I the same stores and clothing departments. I think that in their appearances they will be seen equal and this could possibly be a good start. However, I think might take a little bit more than fashion trends to complete abolish gender stereotypes and roles.
I think cross dressing, as was said in the article, stemmed from social rebellion and from people who saw past gender appropriate clothes to clothes he/she liked to wear. As society became more flexible and open to people not of the norm, the acceptance of cross dressing took off. Also, especially in America, if the stylists say something is in fashion, then there are no questions.

I think that it will take time for gender blending to grow because of many still subconsciously set on the old ways, but I feel gender blending is already on its way. Of course, the younger people will try it first, but eventually, I can see anyone wearing whatever gender blended articles of clothing they like.

Yes, I believe gender neutral clothes do stand for equality concerning gender, a kind of sharing instead of division of gender roles.

I think “men’s clothes” and “women’s clothes” was defined by society over the centuries, but they have always switched. Men wore the bright colors first, the dresses, the high heels. Some may want to wear the other gender’s type of clothes because that’s their sense of fashion. If people can decide if something is fit for a boy or girl, a boy or girl can decide to change that. Also, perhaps, at least from a female perspective, men’s clothes seems tougher and stronger.
Cross dressing had become more acceptable because people like to be individuals and not fit into any specific groups or categories, so by dressing androgynously the don't get labeled as girly or tomboy, just as Bailey or Logan or Kim or whoever they are. I don't however think that everyone should be wearing gender neutral clothes all the time to "even the playing field". I think it is empowering for a woman to wear a girly and pink feminine floral dress that shows off a womanly curves so whyyy should we all just wear neutral clothes? There is nothing wrong with it but I don't necessarily think it levels any playing field, because didn't it used to be that a woman wearing men's clothes made them seem stronger but if a guy wore any women's clothes it emasculated them?

On one hand it could be a way to just be yourself without being girly or guy-ish but on the other hand it is a way to declare no association to either gender. So by dressing neutral are you freeing yourself from male/female biases? Or are you limiting yourself by not being anything?

At first I was sort of weirded out by men wearing tights. Tight jeans I can understand, but tights seem too weird! It is really interesting because I don't see that many cross dressing in hawaii, but I guess style here is much different than the mainland. I do remember going to the mainland and noticing how young people do kind of dress all the same, it is almost a way of fitting in, in a way. In order to be like everyone they dress like a combination of the two gender norms. It also gives the idea that they are calm and relaxed and don't care about fashion, but because they dress that way they are fashion aware.

Yes I do agree because I don't really see people growing old and still wearing that same type of fashion. As people get old in general their fashion sense seems to change and I am sure it will change as this generation grows old as well. I don't think gender neutral clothes represent a type of "evening of the field" in my opinion because I think it a kind of trend and not a statement, but there are those who think it is a type of equality because they are not choosing one over the other gender norm, but it also is not equality because just because you mix the styles doesn't make the genders any more equal in other aspects. I think people are wanting to dress in other clothing because maybe it started with people trying to be manly or feminine for fun and then actually liked it. I am not really sure why I don't have a desire to dress like a boy, but then again what is considered boy clothing anymore?
I think that cross dressing, or androgyny has become more acceptable because, as the article stated, our generation is more open than the last. We were brought up in a way different than the generation before us, learning that it's okay for girls to play a "boy sport" and for guys to wear eyeliner like Johnny Depp. Johnny Depp makes it seem really cool because he's a pirate and pirates= cool. I think it could remain a marginal trend. After a while you will want to wear clothes to impress people rather than wearing clothes to be cool. I guess it could represent a type of equality between men and women, but I think it's just the trend right now. It's what all the celebrities are doing. When a guy wears tight jeans or eyeliner, he's not thinking about how it's womanly to do so, he's thinking about how it's the trend. When a girl wears a "guy" shirt, she's not thinking about being equal with guys, it's just the current style. I sometimes like to wear guys shirts because they're super comfortable. However, like I said before, I don't think that men are thinking about wearing women's clothes necessarily. In general, there is less discrimination in the United States as years pass, but it still very well exists. “Cross dressing” is considered a norm in the way that many more people are doing this in public. Just because it has become a norm does not mean it is normal to “cross dress.” Well, I am definitely freaked out with men dressing in women’s clothes and putting on makeup. On the other hand, women dressing up in men’s clothes do not seem as extreme. As long as the “cross dressing” is not too extreme, I fully support it.

Gender blending is bound to remain a marginal trend because people dress how they want to. Since discrimination is not as bad, people will dress how they feel. Even though discrimination is low, some people may view “cross dressers” as gay or lesbian. Clothes are very important in appearance, and people can make quick judgments based on such material. Gender-neutral clothes represents a type of equality in the way that people can dress however they want no matter what their sex.

Although I have no clue why men would want to wear women’s clothes or why women would want to wear men’s clothes, a change in appearance is nice once in a while. I believe the way one dresses is based on the individual’s personality. Each person has their own opinion on how they will dress. I am still not used to the idea of “cross dressing,” but I do support the reasoning people have behind it. Everyone should have the right to do what they wish. As for the extreme “cross dressers,” I tend to try to stay away from them, but this does not mean I oppose them. I simply am not one hundred percent used to the idea. Overall “cross dressing” is good to have in society and shows society’s progress.
I think American society is becoming more liberal. Cross-dressing is a new idea. While it remains unpracticed by most of society, it is definitely a trend in the fashion world. Even here at school, many boys cross-dressed during grade Lip Sync performances. Rather than feeling disgusted, everyone laughed. Therefore, cross-dressing is not the norm, but it is shifting toward neutrality based on a general trend in our society toward liberal ideas.

I agree with the skeptics. In the end, people who have the money to be picky about clothes will dress to impress. A man who was dressed in a feminine way would not attract many women, and vice-versa for a woman dressed masculine. Furthermore, “gender blending” is a trend that can only stay within certain age limits of probably 13-30 at the most for the general population.

Women and men are different. Nevertheless, we are equal. There is nothing wrong with gender-neutral clothes, but having them represent equality would lead to women and men using the same bathrooms. For example, Kamehameha School requires gender-neutral uniforms for its students, who also use co-ed bathrooms on their track.

I think women want to wear men’s clothes because there is some masculine power that comes with an outfit intended for men. I once wore one of my dad’s suit coats for a history trial and I liked how the shoulder pads made me look menacing. There has been a recent trend of girls’ clothes labeled “boyfriend jeans/undergarments/blazers/etc.” In the case of “boyfriend ,” girls want to give the idea that their boyfriend lent them something to wear, just as if a boy gave his girlfriend his letterman jacket.

Some men may want to wear womens’ clothes because they flatter that particular man’s figure more than mens’ clothes. The only boys at `Iolani that wear skinny jeans are boys who are on the slighter side. I think it is only the fringe of male society that shops in the womens’ section. For example, it was considered scandalous for a woman to have her arms showing back in the day, however, now it is acceptable. I think that this particular issue has become more acceptable simply because of the media's attention on the androgynous clothing. This attention is due to the public's interest. The public's interest probably stems from our deep desires to want to be able to break out of the norm. In a sense, since we many people in society have a deep urge to break out of the norm, the norm itself shifts. I think that the skeptics are probably incorrect. This marginal trend is slowly shifting our thoughts. Back in the day, cross dressing was shunned upon, however, now it is more acceptable. Doesn't this fact in itself show that this marginal trend is shifting the average? I feel that these skeptics do have a valid idea that it could possibly be a marginal trend, however, I feel that this trend will slowly shift into the general populace. I think that gender neutral clothes could represent a type of equality or an "evening of the playing field." I suppose it is vindicating to know that an individual is not as tightly bound by the social expectation to wear a particular type of clothing. I think that it is more equal in a literal sense as well because the neutral clothes would be the same for both parties. These neutral clothes could even show the world that women and men can be similar and can be viewed as more equal. Image plays an important role on the stereotypes of gender. These neutral clothes could end many of the stereo types, assuming that a majority of both parties begins to wear these neutral clothes. I think that men want to wear women's clothes or vice versa to get attention. Another reason they would do this is because they feel that they should not be limited by society and be told what to wear. This would also tie into the fact that a person may feel more comfortable in another article of clothing. If this trend continues, pretty soon "cross dressing" could indeed become a norm. The term may even disappear.
I really enjoyed this article. Hawaii is not exactly a high fashion place. Sure people, especially young girls, like to keep up with the latest trends but the type of clothing that people wear here is much different than in big fashion cities such as New York or parts of Europe. Consequently, I was not aware of this extent of cross dressing.

I think cross dressing has become more acceptable recently because people are finally starting to become more accepting and less stereotypical. I liked what Dr. Ehrensaft said at the end of the article, "Adults have long dictated the way young people dress, but now the young are giving us a different dictation.” We've discussed earlier in class how children are often born into a very stereotypical society. Most parents dress girls in dresses and boys in t-shirts and shorts and give them certain toys to play with. Even newborn baby welcoming signs have designated colors, blue for boys and pink for girls. This has been the way of society for a long time but recently children have become more forward in choosing their own style.

I'm not sure if this cross dressing trend is just a phase or if society will completely transform. I will be interesting to see what happens.

I think gender neutral clothing displays an equal society. In earlier times, men would wear pants and shirts because they were working and it was probably more practical for what they were doing. I don't know exactly why women traditionally dressed in dresses or skirts but it soon became a feminine style. Now that men and women have begun to wear similar things, the barrier between men and women is gradually coming down.
I am not sure why cross-dressing has become more popular.
