It is one thing for two countries to decide to dress up soldiers and send them out into battle to fight each other to the death. It is another altogether to rape the women. The extent to which rape is used in the Congo War is horrifying. Women and children who cannot feel safe in their own home country suffer immensely. Also, the spread of HIV is extremely destructive and dangerous.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"47378856","dateCreated":"1322781216","smartDate":"Dec 1, 2011","userCreated":{"username":"marinahirokane","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/marinahirokane","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/47378856"},"dateDigested":1532141260,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Marina's Response","description":"I feel that rape as a "weapon" is horrifying and can only imagine how life-scarring that could be. Yes women are important in a community, but attacking the women of a village is inhumane. Emotionally rape is terrifying and will only worsen tension between two sides when used as a weapon. I feel lucky to live in a country like America where I am allowed to choose who I want to be with and not have to worry about being raped due to anger. Being raped because it is a "weapon" is terrifying because it is not always because these men find these girls attractive, but its because they do it to anger the other side. The idea that rape being a weapon is disgusting. Rape alone is horrible, but to have a purpose to hurt someone and their family makes it seem so much worse. 60% of the militia men who rape these women and girls have HIV, making this "weapon" all the more deadly. It's sad to think that these innocent women are usually shunned from their families after being raped, especially when they didn't even do anything wrong. The community is completely affected by the problems of the militia officers, however, they make no advances to stop the destruction. 60% of the officers are infected with HIV\/AIDS and they spread it to girls of all ages. I thought it was extremely dirty of the officers to just steal away girls for weeks, even months, and rape them continuously. Families are scared of their daughters getting raped and the girls are scared of being displaced from their homes if they do get raped. The problem is that the girls think that their rapist isn't the problem, but they are. The family and community shun the raped girl instead of the officers. The real problem is who they put the blame on. I think that girls and families, especially the community, should fight for their rights.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"47311526","dateCreated":"1322715686","smartDate":"Nov 30, 2011","userCreated":{"username":"miki10","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/miki10","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/47311526"},"dateDigested":1532141260,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Miki's Response","description":"After reading this article, the first thing that I said was WOW! I had a hard time believing that women everyday are being raped by not just men but soldiers! Soldiers who are trying to fight for their country. I was aware that rape is known as a weapon during war but taking it this far is just far too much. The militiamen have caused so much embarassment for these young women that they do not have the ability to look someone in the eye while speaking. How sad is that? I think that the militiamen main reason for doing this is power. All men want power and they feel that raping women is the only way to accomplish this. I hope that in the following years a man will stand up for these women and tell these militiamen that raping women is wrong and immoral. Women have the same rights as men and do not deserve to be treated like that. I feel bad for these women who are raped and I wish that there was something that I could do besides just reading an article informing me about this problem and not doing anything.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"47309334","dateCreated":"1322713449","smartDate":"Nov 30, 2011","userCreated":{"username":"xoxomika","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/xoxomika","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/47309334"},"dateDigested":1532141260,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Mika's Response","description":"I thought it was surprising and utterly disturbing how men use rape as a weapon of war. I think they rape women because it hurts the men that care about them more than a wound would in battle. Most men would take a bullet or risk their lives in war rather than seeing their loved ones get hurt. I think rape is the ultimate weapon of war because hurting men psychologically would affect them more than hurting them physically. Personally, I would rather have pain inflicted on me rather than see one of my family members hurt. Although women who have been raped are permanently scarred, i think they will eventually regain their confidence to walk the streets again without having that fear of being raped. They can do this by telling others to stay away from militiamen and reducing the numbers of rapes, which will bring reassurance to women that this horrific experience will never happen again. I don't think militiamen will ever completely eradicate the practice of rape, because they understand that it is the one thing that will hurt their enemies the most. Hopefully, they will come to their senses that raping is illegal, emotionally and physically scarring, and empathize about how they would feel if they were experiencing the same situation.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"47301180","dateCreated":"1322706138","smartDate":"Nov 30, 2011","userCreated":{"username":"catchu909","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/catchu909","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/pic\/1317882302\/catchu909-lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/47301180"},"dateDigested":1532141261,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Catherine's Response","description":"It is ridiculous that rape is used as a sort of weapon against women in this long and tedious war between neighboring countries. In a war, there are usually more male warriors than female ones but in this particular one, it seems like the women who do not want anything to do with the war dragged into this national issue as well. It is sickening that these Rwandan men are using tactics such as rape to attack South Kivu. If the Congolese Rally for Democracy group is supposed to protect South Kivu and ensure justice among the people, then why are the soldiers in the militia still taking advantage of the women? In the article, it noted that that it is "difficult to find a family not affected by sexual violence". If there are this many families being destroyed and sexually assaulted by the militia, then why doesn't the Congolese Rally group enforce a rule to rid of these men? From the article, it doesn't seem like the militia is protecting the people of South Kivu. Instead, the military is corrupting and raping these poor women who have nothing to do with the war. It was disappointing when it mentioned in the article that the females who were raped were not accepted by their families or husband. If they were not married previously, then their reputation was "spoiled" and they had no chance of marrying. It is not these girls' faults that they are raped. They are not expressing any form of provocative behavior or trying to gain attention by talking to the men. In one incident in the article, the soldiers came up to the door with a picture in hand asking where the girl was. They searched the house nonstop until they found the girl and then raped her in front of her parents. There was absolutely no logical reason behind it. The men saw a picture of her and due to their sexual desire, they raped her. The girl did nothing to deserve this kind of treatment. She is not in control of her life and from this incident, she is shunned from society. Though girls tried to avoid sexual assault, sometimes, they are lured in by trickery and deception without even knowing it. Gisele, age 13, was simply traveling to her sister's house in the mountains when she was stopped by 2 uniformed men. They pretended to be kind and help her find her way but instead, they led her back to base where one of them raped her. When her sister learned of this, she went to the base to talk to commander. The commander in return threatened the older sister.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[{"id":"47301470","body":"This shows that the militia is not only corrupting the society and treating the females badly, they also bring harm to the people.
