I personally would never want to be circumcised, but for someone who has grown up surrounded by the idea that circumcision is normal circumcision would be a logical next step. However, I was shocked by the young age of many of the girls being circumcised. Some girls looked too young to even speak or voice their own opinions. I feel that, while it would be very difficult if not impossible to ban a religious tradition so deeply ingrained in this society, all people should have a say as to the mutilation of their own body. I also found this practice shocking because of the reasons given for the circumcision. In the article, it was said that the purpose of the circumcision is to stabilize the woman’s libido. As in Persepolis with the veil, men and women are seen as primal beings with no self control over their passions. I feel that this view is very backwards and misinformed. I also find it interesting that, again like Persepolis, the women are forced to change their lifestyle, and in this case their bodies, in order to combat the primal nature of humans. Why are men not forced to change rather than women? I also found it disturbing that all of the reasons for the circumcision were purely philosophical rather than medical. With male circumcision, there are some health benefits. However, with female circumcision there is no attempt to conceal the patriarchal motives behind the mutilation.
After reading this article, I was shocked to see that it happens in other places than where I had heard of. I knew circumcision on females occurred in Africa, but I never knew it occurred elsewhere. I initially thought that it was very inhumane and I don't agree with this custom because it is putting restraint on women as if we have hormones that cannot be controlled. However, I don't think that circumcision should be banned as a law because it is part of the Muslim religion and is something that those people think is right and justified. I think that it is part of their religion and it wouldn't be right to get rid of it because each religion has its different customs. By banning circumcision, the Muslim religion would suffer because the people's right to practice their religion freely would be restricted. Overall, this topic is very touchy because although I don't agree with circumcision, it is truly up to the parents of the child and the customs of a certain religion that dictate whether this painful procedure is morally just.
After reading about this kind practice for the first time in my life, I was shocked and found it a little sickening. When health risks come along with religion practices, it becomes very difficult put restrictions on rituals like this. What saddens me is the fact that the daughters who go through this do not have a say in the beginning and I also wondered why it was the mothers who requested this procedure to be done, not the father. Is it some sort of bonding experience that draws the mother and the daughter closer together? Whatever the true reason behind this procedure, outsiders who do not understand the Muslim religion are not in the right postion to judge, criticize, and prohibit this tradition in the Muslim culture.
I used to think that circumcision was only for boys, I didn't know that FEMALES could be circumcised, too! I dont understand why females have to follow in the practices of men especially when there is no medical benefit to it. I think that circumcision is unnatural for women. If it is not feasible then why go through the pain? The clitorus is a sensual spot for a woman and taking that away is like taking away a part of the woman's self. I am absolutely against this mostly because of the misconceived medical benefits but also because this surgery is taking away from a female body. contrastly, a man is not having anything taken away, just a reorganization of some sort...eww to think about it but yeah. i dont think that it should be banned because girls should have their own choice for everything to stimulate women empowerment. However mothers, like in Indonesia tradition, should be banned. this tradition marks the celebration of muhammad. Honestly the banning of circumcision won't affect the Muslim tradition much because it is just a belief of honoring ancestors and goes through pain to do so. Most young girls don't even know why. it should be banned
Personally, I don't see the point in circumcision in male or female alike. The process itself seems pointless and unnecessary. I honestly don't know what parts of the body are cut off exactly, but I don't see the benefits of it (maybe I'm just ignorant). However, as this is a cultural practice, I can't judge against the Indonesian girls who undergo this procedure and the Indonesian women who aid them. In my american eyes, I dont see the purpose of this practice. But to the women, there must be some sort of meaning behind this.

On the debate about whether circumcision should be banned or not, I think it depends on the circumstances. For cultural reasons that have long since been installed, then this procedure should be okay. But for any other harmful reason, and agaisnt the patient's will should not be allowed.
When I first think of circumcision, I think of males taking part in this procedure. So I was completely shocked to find out that in Indonesia, about 96% of families have had their daughters circumcised by the age of 14. As I continued to read the article, I really wanted to know if there were any health benefits to this procedure. Laura Guarenti states, “There is no medical value in circumcising girls. For boys, this may reduce the risk of infection and the protection against HIV”. I would understand a bit more for the reasons of circumcising girls if there were added health benefits. Now knowing there are no health benefits, I believe it should be the right of the individual to choose whether or not to partake in the procedure. This type of decision should not be enforced by others, especially on young girls who don’t know much. But if female circumcision is a part of the Indonesian tradition for girls, I can choose to disagree with the ritual but I cannot stop them from doing what they believe in. In Indonesian culture, female circumcision is viewed as a right of passage, to purify and restore gender identity. I felt really bad for the girls who have to go through the procedure, especially at such a young age. I wonder if traditions like female circumcisions are going too far.
I personally would never have my daughter circumcised, because it is not a part of my religion or ideology to do so. Reading the part about how they do these circumcisions was....interesting, but nonetheless it is a part of the these people's religions, and as long as it is not harming these girls in the long run and it does not hurt anyone else, I do not see the problem. If males do find these females with circumcised genitals more attractive, it will benefit them when they do wish to get married. We should not be imposing our own ideas on someone else. What is the point? There is none! I do not see the reasoning behind even starting a ritual like this. Not only are there absolutely no medical values in doing this, but so little is cut off (ex. "the size of a quarter-grain of rice, the tip of a leaf, or the head of a needle.") Those sizes prove that there is no point to even doing a circumcision on a girl. I can see why boys are circumcised. It is because there is actually a reason and it benefits them by reducing the risk of infections and helps protect against H.I.V. What benefits are there for girls? The benefits that the article listed do not make sense at all.

Also the way that these procedures are taking place is very unsanitary. The location is in a school where desks are pushed together to make a bed and a blanket (probably used for every patient) is put down. These women are not even doctors, which makes them uncertified to perform a procedure like this. And if no other hints were given as to the pointlessness and ridiculousness of these circumcisions they should have noticed that circumcisions have been outlawed in 15 other countries in Africa and others have been prosecuted in France and the United States. What does that tell you? It tells you that circumcising girls is wrong. The United States is one of the most medically inclined countries in the world, why not follow their advice or even follow their footsteps and stop doing circumcisions?

As for being "a rite of passage meant to purify the genitals and bestow gender identity on a female child" isn’t the child already pure and doesn’t become impure until she has had sex? Also the male and female bodies are very different. I am 100% sure that every little girl knows that she is a girl and is not confused over what gender she is.
