In Haiti it is extremely sad that these men take advantage of the women who are already broken as it is. with no home and barely any food or water she is already physically and emotionally vulnerable. What also makes me super angry is that the police are not doing anything. They are part of the problem because it is there job to protect but they aren't doing anything. I think the country needs to rebuild and the problems will decrease however as long as there is a power struggle and gender inequality in Haiti there will be a struggle to make this madness stop.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"47800518","dateCreated":"1323314042","smartDate":"Dec 7, 2011","userCreated":{"username":"annikastreng","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/annikastreng","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/47800518"},"dateDigested":1532141253,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Current Event Response. I would never have assumed that because of the natural disaster, the number of crimes would also increase. I think a lot of women felt especially vulnerable after the earthquake because men, the ones with the ultimate power, were in a state of desperation and panic. I think that there is a relation between Haiti being a third world country and the number of crimes. The lack of education in men is evident. Men in Haiti should be taught to respect women and that rape is not a normal offense. Although our culture is different than Haiti's and most of our men know to respect women, as my peers have stated: rape is rape. It was surprising to hear of the story when a women wanted to report a rape to a police officer and he did nothing about it. I think that the authority of Haiti are powerless at this point for the situation, sadly to say. At this time, conditions are so poor there that the main thing that needs to be changed are the men themselves, not the police. It is also sad to know that the asylums for women to turn to also suffer from poor conditions and most women indeed do not want to go there.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"47799030","dateCreated":"1323312568","smartDate":"Dec 7, 2011","userCreated":{"username":"brfreema","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/brfreema","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/47799030"},"dateDigested":1532141253,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Current Event Response ","description":"We are all too familiar with the turmoil and destruction Haiti has faced in recent history. The escalation of sexual violence towards women and girls has only increased with the destruction of Port au Prince. The governmental and social structure of Haiti has never been stable and the effects of natural disaster in Haiti have only increased their problems. The initiatives pro-bobo organizations are taking to the problems of sexual violence is incredible. More of the larger bed sheet camps in Pot au Prince should establish a security system like the one talked about in the article. This would insure security and allow women and girls to not to have to worry about being sexually assaulted at any time of day. There needs to be a push for quick response to rape victims however, most victims try to conceal their pain which only leads the offender to believe he\/she can do it again. Education of the women and girls is necessary and should include self-defense maneuvers. A willing and caring group of individuals needs to be assembled to assist and comfort sexual assault victims as the sex offended did not only do physical damage, but damage to the soul. Only with the action of many hands coming together to fix a common good will mend and prevent acts of sexual violence in Haiti.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"47795818","dateCreated":"1323309695","smartDate":"Dec 7, 2011","userCreated":{"username":"saphyre_rezentes","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/saphyre_rezentes","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/47795818"},"dateDigested":1532141253,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Current Events","description":" I read through this article and it just brought both sadness and frustration to me. It is horrible that women in Haiti, as well as many other women around the world, have to go through the terror and suffering of rape. I can't imagine the physical and emotional pain that women have and have had to go through.
\n And what is even worse is that after Haiti experienced such a nasty natural disaster, men had the nerve to go out and commit such an act to women. Would you not care about rebuilding your community and your country? But instead, men rather go out and do such evil things to innocent women and girls. Who does that? Do we not use our heads? Do we not have hearts? This is why men have so much stereotypes, especially when it comes to topics such as sex. It is up to the government to act upon this issue. Even though there may be other issues that need to be dealt with, no issue should be thrown under the carpet, no matter how small. I know it is hard because places such as Haiti are third world countries who are not as fortunate, but there is always a way. We, especially those of us from the United States, just need to keep praying and keep trying to help in any way that we can.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"47775806","dateCreated":"1323293732","smartDate":"Dec 7, 2011","userCreated":{"username":"johannum","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/johannum","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/47775806"},"dateDigested":1532141253,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Current Event Review","description":"I was really surprised to find out that women and girls are being raped after such a terrible disaster like the one in Haiti. In a place of ruin and rebuilding, women shouldn't have to worry about being abused and raped, they should be able to rebuild. There should not be the chance of their lives to continually be ruined. Its sad that the people who are trying to help, can't. Without support they have no chance in protecting and supporting these women. The rebuilding efforts in Haiti should also consider helping women who are effected by rapists and abusers. Even though it may not be the most obvious after a disaster, women in countries like Haiti need to be protected and given the chance to rebuild again. They have no sense of security even in their own tents. I am glad people are trying to help them by teaching the women techniques towards defending themselves and police officers about rape. The idea of placing more women as police officers is a great idea to spread equality throughout Haiti, where men treat women like nothing. Hopefully by gaining more equality and respect the number of rapes will decrease. However, this would be very hard to do as the security force in the asylums are not substantial enough. It is too easy for a man to sneak about at night, knowing it would be very difficult to be identified. On top of that, the government needs to sift through the civilians and find criminals who are raping girls and women. Right now, Haiti is the ideal place for crime and rapists are taking advantage. Refugee camps are also a problem when the sun sets and the lights are out. The easiness to commit a crime and get away with it makes it all the more enticing. In the end, no matter what you call it, rape is a crime and it needs to be addressed and dealt with. Women and girls already have their survival to worry about and they are in a lose-lose situation. This article emphasizes the unfortunate and underground circumstances on after-earthquake rape victims in Haiti. These living conditions already make it physically and mentally difficult to live but adding the fear of being raped is definitely troublesome for these women. Women in Haiti are facing an increase in sexual violence because of the unprotected campgrounds and living conditions they are in. Prior to the earthquake, they had more protection and less to worry about when it came down to sexual violence.
\nHaiti is struggling with disaster reliefs from the earthquake. On top of that, Haiti, being a third world country, has already struggled with economic, social, and political control. After a natural disaster, most citizens don\u2019t think of the safety of present and future rape victims. This is why the increase of rape victims is because rapists are more likely to get away with the act because the government\u2019s attention is elsewhere.
\nI thought it was interesting that Haiti and organizations are addressing this problem over other standpoints, such as providing enough food and water. I believe that the groups addressing this problem know that an increase in rape victims could lead to an even more disastrous future for Haiti. Protecting the safety of citizens is important because it allows the people to have trust in the government. What these organizations are providing for rape victims in Haiti is essentially what will help decrease rape incidents. Educating more of these women in the overcrowded campgrounds and providing an understanding community will allow women to have strength.
\nGirls under 18 probably struggle with recovery the most out of all rape victims because they are not yet dependent, strong women. Of course any rape victim can recover from such an unfortunate event but the process and needs provided, such as counseling, are quite expensive. Haiti is struggling to support the needs of under 18 rape victims.
\nRape is rape. There is no rape that is worse than others. The U.S. rape victims might have more accessible resources to recover, but all over the world rape is an issue that needs to be solved.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"47723496","dateCreated":"1323239581","smartDate":"Dec 6, 2011","userCreated":{"username":"sacarlil","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/sacarlil","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/47723496"},"dateDigested":1532141254,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"CE Response","description":"It is so sad to see that rape in Haiti continues to be such a huge issue.
