I think that the literary front the authors protray depends on their subject matter. There is a great difference of perception between say Stephanie Meyer's Twilight and Olympe de Gouges' Rights of Women and Citizen. The work of a political activist will be taken seriously no matter who the author. It will provoke an emotion and excite an audience.

To me women and men authors have equal standing. I don't tend to read either over the other. I guess the most distinguished works of literature in our history have been written almost exclusively by men but that is because women never had the opportunities in those times that they have now. Most of the time yes women will write with a direct voice towards women and target a female audience, but there is no rule saying men cannot learn or relate to these messages as well. Both genders should be treated equally for their writings and should not be looked at as more superior than another. We should be happy that both genders were blessed to have the talent to write for our entertainment and not judge the book by the artist.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"29385545","dateCreated":"1288575201","smartDate":"Oct 31, 2010","userCreated":{"username":"kelseyhung","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/kelseyhung","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/29385545"},"dateDigested":1532140549,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Author Bias","description":"I think it is ridiculous for people to think that a woman\u2019s words are less credible. I think the stereotype that women are dumb and uneducated play into the cause of this. I don\u2019t think it matters in the end whether a book is written by a man or a woman, because ultimately we are focusing on what they can do with the book rather than who they are or what gender they are. If people change their opinion of a book just because the gender of the author, they are being extremely sexist, and need to return to the 20th Century where legally women have the same rights and capacity of men. This article did not alter my view of women writers in any negative way. If anything, it made me want to stick up for them more because of the sexism they have against them. I think we could try to fully get rid of this bias, but ultimately we aren\u2019t able to change people\u2019s minds, so guarantee some would be steadfast in their beliefs. Like we discussed in class, the authors of the Twilight Series and Harry Potter Series are very successful at the moment. They are a good representation of the women in the writing world.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"29332775","dateCreated":"1288391812","smartDate":"Oct 29, 2010","userCreated":{"username":"jeremybautista","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/jeremybautista","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/29332775"},"dateDigested":1532140549,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Gender and Literature","description":"I am not sure if this is truly the way that the works of female and male writers are viewed in society, but personally, I don't believe that it should matter who is writing a book as long as the book is worth reading. If a woman had written the book, would it have been sidelined rather than celebrated? However, while my naive mind may answer Picoult's question with a no, I feel as though many people do look towards female writing negatively. I don't think that this problem is one that can be fixed by anybody except for the readers because critics are going to think what they want to think, ultimately. This article did make me notice the trend happening regarding women's role in literature and it is unfortunate. I am personally now more motivated to read more books written by females. I don't think that the author of the books matter, but the narrator in the story might matter. I know that I personally, I have always steered towards stories narrated by men because I feel like I can relate better to them. I don't think that there is a question about the credebility of women's writing, and if there is, there really should not be. Women are just as educated as men and should not be taken as anything but educated. Actually, the sentence at the end just means that she is not a regular writer for the newspaper, I don't take it as anything but a note on her role for the newspaper.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"29296075","dateCreated":"1288349583","smartDate":"Oct 29, 2010","userCreated":{"username":"stephanieung11","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/stephanieung11","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/29296075"},"dateDigested":1532140549,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"author bias","description":"Unfortunately, I do think that this bias exists in the world today. It is caused by the mere but true fact that many or most great literary works are written by men. Ideally, if a women had written the book, it should not be sidelined because a well-written book is a well-written book. Realistically, however, gender bias does play a role in how books are perceived. I would not necessarily say that the book, if written by a female, would be sidelined, but it would definitely not have received as much attention. Unfortunately, I do not really think there is any way to get rid of this bias. Gender bias will always exist because the dichotomy of male and female exists. And although quality of writing should be objective, it is essentially impossible to judge a literary work without being subjective because it is true that women and men both tend to have specific writing styles.

\nI also found a paragraph at the end of the article very interesting that I agree with. The whole article basically debates whether there is a gender bias when it comes to the success and celebration of a novel. But, in fact, it is impossible to say whether or not gender bias is directly responsible for a book's success. Just because a novel written by a female author is not chosen as the winner does not mean that it is strictly due to the author's gender. It could just plainly be because the quality of writing is not as high. And vice versa, if a novel written by a man is chosen, it is not necessarily because he is a male.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"29295611","dateCreated":"1288347752","smartDate":"Oct 29, 2010","userCreated":{"username":"kterayama","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/kterayama","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/29295611"},"dateDigested":1532140549,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Women Left on Bottom Bookshelf","description":"It hurts me to know that even in the media and book world, there is gender discrimination. I dont agree with the idea that novels written by men can be read by anyone but novels written by women can only be read by women because "a feminine voice is for a feminine audience". The article states that "this idea also has legs in the world outside of fiction". this is true because whatever men say or do is the norm but if women say or do something, it can only be related to other women. T believe that there is a way to end this bias but the only way to do it is if authors don't write there names. that way, all novels can be read equally without a before judgment. Knowing the gender of the author may put a lot of different views on his or her own book by other people. This is because women are always in favor of another women and men are always in favor of men, so there will always be controversy on the opinions and views of a book.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"29293819","dateCreated":"1288336740","smartDate":"Oct 29, 2010","userCreated":{"username":"DaniCalifornia7","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/DaniCalifornia7","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/29293819"},"dateDigested":1532140549,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"author bias","description":"Possibily due to my own openness to wheather a book\/movie was written by a male or female, I don't believe the bias exists. The two most popular movie series Twilight and Harry Potter were both written by females if I am not mistaken and have sold millions of copies both in books and movie tickets. Additionally, everyone knows who Emily Dickinson is or has heard her name as a famous poet. However, author gender I will agree use to be an issue when women had to publish their books under male names, such as Shelly who wrote Frankinstein. Now though, women can publish their books with their own name. I think the question whether the book would be sidelined if it was written by a women is a valid one because there is still mild sexism, however; I don't see it as a huge issue considering the events listed above of which gained great acknowledgement regardless of the fact that the books were written by females.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"29293427","dateCreated":"1288335136","smartDate":"Oct 28, 2010","userCreated":{"username":"tihategirl22","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/tihategirl22","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/29293427"},"dateDigested":1532140549,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Women Authors","description":"This article really opened my eyes to current gender issues in media and literature that I thought were very overwhelming and surprising to me because I didn't really think that the issue of male vs. female in writing was at such a high competitio level. I definitely do think that there is still the bias goig o ad it could possibly be caused by the type of writings men put out and the type women put out. Men and women have both a different style of portrayig things throught their writings. Picoult's question really also showed the bias. I think that it shouldn't have mattered if a man or woman wrote the piece, the content is what should be judged on whether it should be celebrated or sidelined. I don't really think that we can completely rid the world of literature of this bias, if aything, the drastic measure would to have anonymous writing. This article altered my views on women authors because I give them more credit for having to deal with the bias people put up and having to fight for their word against that of men's.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"29292903","dateCreated":"1288332851","smartDate":"Oct 28, 2010","userCreated":{"username":"Nikkixyokoyama","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/Nikkixyokoyama","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/29292903"},"dateDigested":1532140549,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Women Authors","description":"I think this article is every interesting and I agree that there still is bias out there. However, I believe people are improving. For example, at the end when the article states that just because a woman does not win the award, it does not mean they are being ignored and if a man wins, they are being bias. I think it is possible to achieve a bias-free society, but it is impossible to convince everyone the society truly is free of bias. This is because I believe that people will always feel they are being treated unfairly if they do not win or is not recognized. There is no way to make people stop feeling this way when they are not credited with the amount of praise they desired. In conclusion, I think this article discusses a very important and interesting issue in our society today.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]}],"more":true},"comments":[]},"http":{"code":200,"status":"OK"},"redirectUrl":null,"javascript":null,"notices":{"warning":[],"error":[],"info":[],"success":[]}}
