It's sickening. I don't understand how people can behave like that to one another. But then again, that's what we in the modern world have been saying about slavery. If there is a will to do something, the persecutors will find a way to justify their actions. Whatever justification they came up with, I think the gang of boys uultimately did what they did out of fear and ignorance. Fear of difference and ignorance of their actions.

It's heartbreaking to think that acts of violence like this are happening all over the country. The age of the assaulters shows how immature young men are in our society. I think the suspects made the victim beat the 30 year old man just to be cruel. They forced him to do it as a punishment. It is said that the suspects resorted to violence. Because of their immaturity, violence was probably the only thing that came to their minds. Recent attacks against gays are just horrible and disturbing. It is very depressing to know that these things are actaully happening. It just shows how low we we've become as a nation. The community should be accepting and understanding. But this will not happen. There is always going to be hate and violence against gays. A lot of people in our community aren't accepting and maturea about it. I don't think that there is any punishment that can make up for what the suspects have done. To me, torturing is worse than murder. But torturing the suspects won't do anything.
I honestly felt violated just reading this article. It feels too unbelievably horrifying to possibly be true, which is probably why the article said that this was one of the worst hate crimes that happened. It makes me angry, scared, sad, and shocked that something like this could happen to people just because of their sexual orientation. It is immoral to judge someone and then torture them based on their sexual orientation. It is no one else’s business if a man is gay; he can’t help it and shouldn’t have to change either.

1. What does the age of the assaulters reveal about society today?

The age of the assaulters reveals that in today’s society, young adults are probably the most homophobic. Most adolescents aren’t even educated or experienced enough to have a justified stance on this issue, unless they have had lots of exposure to gays and lesbians. I feel that young people are too naïve and conforming, which is why they do not really understand the issue of sexual orientation.

2. Why do you think the suspects made the victim beat the 30 year-old man?

I think they made the victim beat the 30 year-old man as punishment for being gay, which is really stupid, in my opinion. They probably wanted him to feel guilty for being gay and to show him that he would never be accepted into their gang if he is gay.

3. What do you think caused them to resort to such violence against people they don't even know?

Actually, I thought the article said that some of them did know some or all three victims. I think people are more prone to attack people they know because of something they dislike about specific people, such as sexual orientation in this case. The suspects could possibly have hated the victims for other reasons too, but sexual orientation is the main reason, which is an unjustified reason.

4. What do you think about the recent attacks against gays?

I think that recent attacks against gays could have been encouraged by previous attacks, causing some kind of chain effect. I think that in today’s society, homosexuality is only beginning to emerge as acceptable, and those who are scared of this possibility are resorting to violence against homosexuals, gays especially.

5. How do you think the community will react?

I think that the community can either react positively or negatively to these attacks. I think that most people, in general, are good, not evil; thus, I think after reading an article like this one, they will feel that hurting gays is definitely wrong. All we need is for people to be educated about this issue, then maybe more people will stand up for gays and fight for them.

6. What is the appropriate punishment, if any, for the 9 attackers?

I would say jail for life is the appropriate punishment for all of them because what they did is absolutely unacceptable. Even the article said that they committed one of the worst hate crimes ever heard of.
After reading this article I was shocked yet at the same time not really. They abducted gay people and forced unjust punishments on them. The acceptance of sexual orientations, gay or straight, is still a big topic that floats around in the air. To see that there are people like the nine attackers out there forcing what they think is the only right way is frightening. I could not even read the entire article completely, and I cannot even imagine how much pain and torture the gay man must have gone through. It is truly disappointing to hear about such acts of brutality that are taking place today just because of a person's sexual orientation. I honestly do not understand why the gang would even do this in the first place. Whether a person wants to be gay or not is their choice, and their business alone. There is a certain point where the line is being crossed on the hate against the gay and this inccident has crossed the line way to far. They probably resorted to such violence because it catches attention and is a strong warning to others. I think the reaction that is so wrong because the suspects are judging on differences doesn't have to be applied for just violence against gay people.
