Maybe I had it coming since I was somewhat aware of the sex trafficking business in Southeast Asia, but to know the full extent of the damage that this "industry" has caused is ridiculous. The vicious cycle of children, who sell their bodies because their parents cannot afford to keep them, giving birth to a new generation of children who will sell their bodies because their parents cannot afford to raise them. The tragedy of having half of the population under the age of 25 only contributes to the problem. These children are the ones who will be leading the country in the future. These uncared-for children who know nothing but begging and stealing and prostitution are the future of Cambodia. It certainly paints a very bleak picture.
I was deeply saddened after watching this video. Living in such a luxurious places such as Hawaii and having the opportunity to attend a school as prestigious as Iolani, it is hard to believe such horrible things are happening in other places such as Cambodia. No child should have to deal with poverty or pedophilia on a daily basis. It is just sickening. I believe this is the reason Cambodia is in the situation they are in. If the children are the future and such horrible things are happening to these children, what does that say about the future of Cambodia. I think things such as prostitution and pedophilia exist because there is a lack of education and support for the youth. I definitely think pedophilia is a major problem that must be solved. Also, I think Camile Hardman's work, along with McGinley, is a good step towards solving this problem. The story of the three motherless girls made me realize the severity of this problem. I think the documentary, The Altruist, is a good way to notify many people of this problem. I agree with the ideas of the M'Lop Tapand organization and support their efforts to protect innocent children from sexual predators and violence. Overall, this article made me realize how harsh and scary the life of some children may be and how much of a difference organizations can make on their lives.
I honestly cannot understand why people accept pedophiles and the disgusting acts that they commit or why these pedophiles exist in the first place. On one hand, you have to believe that these people are only pedophiles because they have some sort of mental but, at the same time, they cannot be let off the hook. With the young people of the population continually going through this problem, the future of the nation is bound to meet failure. This is such a terrible problem and it should be fixed and I admire for McGinley for attempting to fix a problem that seems so deeply rooted in the population. People who enjoy child pornography are pedophiles. Some pedophiles are sexually attracted only toward children and are not at all attracted toward adults. Pedophilia is usually a chronic condition.( http://www.psychnet-uk.com/dsm_iv/pedophilia.htm) Pedophilia is obviously wrong! When I think about pedophiliait makes me sick because there are so many people like them and we don’t even know it. They are harmful to the children and our society. These people affect children both physically and mentally. They corrupt the minds of young kids and lety them believe that their safe and in good hands. They convince them that they will take care of them. This is simply wrong and disgusting! I was shocked when I read that this is the “pedophile capitol of the world” but when I read that half of Cambodia’s population is under the age of twenty-five years old I wasn’t surprised that it was. I cannot even imagine children being prostitutes like not even the average age of the child prostitute which would be like teens, but that is STILL bad. It is pretty sad that these families depened on pedophiles for basic neccesities. What also I thought was so gruesome was that the little kids have aids and hivs. I cannot wrap my mind around this nasty fact. It is so unthinkable. We need more people like John McGinely who will be the good samaritan and helpd these poor children. I just feel so bad for those children being that I have a little sister myself. In this case, I don’t think they use sex to get pleasure out of the experience. Instead, they see it as if they have sex, and the more they do, the more power over others they have. More so if they are abusing people they know, because they have a personal relation to their victims. Because the country’s population is so young, it gives the older ones more people to do these crimes to. Sadly, the age difference makes the younger ones powerless and more vulnerable to the abuse of the older population. Also, most are orphans, and have no parent figure to protect them. In other cases, the parents are the ones abusing them. When the word pedophile comes to mind, I always picture a creepy man. However, this may not be the case all the time. I now see why Cambodia is sometimes called the “pedophile capital of the world.” I think they call John McGinley “the altruist”, because the definition of the word directly coincides with his work in Cambodia. The statistics are staggering. It was extremely shocking for me to hear that 90% of the population has faced some kind of violence. From the stories in the articles, it seems like a lot of that violence comes from family members, particularly the alcoholic parents. Because my parents have always supported and loved me, I find it hard to believe that there could be a country where so many parents seem to either physically or sexually abuse their children. It is a strange concept that is still difficult for me to grasp. What makes this problem even worse for Cambodia is that HALF of the entire population is under the age of 25. If Cambodia wants to rebuild itself, that new generation are key in its success. But if those younger generations are continually abused, it will be not only be detrimental to the individuals but also the country as a whole as well. I really admire McGinley for his efforts to help the children of Cambodia. His actions just go to show that there is hope. I also think that the documentary they are making is a great idea. Not only does it make money to help the Cambodian children, it raises awareness around the world. The fact that we are discussing this article in class must mean that the documentary has already been effective.
I think pedofiles exist because they have this in my opinion strange love for children, but they express it in a very sexual adult way. I think it is wrong to be a pedophile because they rob children of their innocence. Children don't have the mental development of an adult as shouldnt be abused by putting them in situations that if they had knowledge of what was going on, they wouldnt be doing. With half of the population of cambodian being under the age of 25 it certainly makes it difficult to start a family, if that is even the pedophiles intention, which I believe it is not. I think morally the pedophiles need to look at themselves and consider their intentions. The only way to raise the age of people in Cambodia is to wait for them to get older, but with the offenders knowing the children and constantly being around them their moral judgement may think the close relationships make it ok to have sexual relationships as well.

5.Why do you think John, the investment banker who left his job to help Cambodian street children, is called the “altruist”?

An altruist is someone who is unselfishly devoted to an issue. Seeing as John left his life behind to help Cambodian children, he is clearly not doing it to get rich and live a better life for himself, but to solely help the children have a better life
