There is dispute among committee members that the Olympics are not upholding the equality of sports by allowing countries, specifically South Arabia who do not allow their Muslim women to participate, to enter the Olympics with only male competitors.
\nAlthough it is very undesirable for women to be unable to compete in the Olympics, I do not think it is the responsibility of the Olympic committee to enforce gender equality. As long as they take a neutral stance, meaning they neither promote not lash out at what these countries are doing, than they cannot be held accountable when clearly it is the government of South Arabia's fault that these women are unable to compete. If the Olympics were to force countries to enter women simply to highlight gender equality, then they would also have to enforce this rule on other countries and its not fair to impose another countries traditions on the whole world. The problem needs to be solved from the roots of the issue which begin with a need for government reform. Even if the Olympics were to require a competitor from each sex to enter, I believe that this would cause more harm than good because then religion, beliefs, and government are brought into the sports world making it an all around messy situation.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"51225268","dateCreated":"1330733016","smartDate":"Mar 2, 2012","userCreated":{"username":"jolike","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/jolike","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/51225268"},"dateDigested":1532140605,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Jona's Response","description":"I thought that this article was very interesting and I that people in the Olympics should do whatever they want to do. I think this is because for one, Olympic athletes are awesome and very athletic and two, because people want to see the worlds best competitors compete and strive to be the best. That's why I totally think they are all pointing fingers at one another. And I just think that is extremely wrong and should never happen, to protect the integrity of the Olympics.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"51224080","dateCreated":"1330730186","smartDate":"Mar 2, 2012","userCreated":{"username":"nisteine","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/nisteine","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/51224080"},"dateDigested":1532140605,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Nick's Response","description":"After reading the article I thought it was a very good thing that the Olympic committee wanted to promote and encourage inclusiveness. I found it shocking and deplorable that places like Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Brunei have not yet sent female athletes to the Olympics. However, I feel that the Olympic committee's stance to encourage these nations to send female athletes to the games might lead to improvements in female rights back at their home countries. Overall it is good that big organizations like the Olympic committee are stepping up to combat discrimination.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"51223638","dateCreated":"1330728945","smartDate":"Mar 2, 2012","userCreated":{"username":"nickisilva808","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/nickisilva808","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/pic\/1337203052\/nickisilva808-lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/51223638"},"dateDigested":1532140605,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Nicki's Response","description":"When I read this article, I was super disappointed that women are still denied the right to enter big events, such as the Olympics. This definitely shows how different societies and cultures view and treat women. I think its sad that countries such as Qatar still view women below men. I also agree with Sebastian Coe when he said: "I think you can use sport in a way to encourage social change at a sensible rate." I think that sports bring people together and can definitely have a major impact in social changes. If anything, the Olympic games should be bringing these cultures together and sparking equality, and I hope in the future that it will happen.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"51223506","dateCreated":"1330728673","smartDate":"Mar 2, 2012","userCreated":{"username":"cacaron","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/cacaron","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/51223506"},"dateDigested":1532140605,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Camilles response ","description":"Honestly this article was not that surprising. I agree that excluding women from these sports are is not the Olympics' fault. Although discrimination is a common problem in events like the Olympics, I personally feel they do pretty well in being fair. I remember hearing that in order for a sport to be put into the Olympics, it has to be open to women as well. This was a concern to the female skateboarding industry when skateboarding was being considered to be in the Olympics. The root of the problem stems from the countries themselves. The countries lack of support of women is perpetuated into these games because they lack women participants. I think the blame should be directed at the negligent countries rather than the games itself. The need for change may be in these games but the problem is elsewhere and needs to be addressed before women can move forward.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[{"id":"51221196","body":"Sorry I forgot to put my name... It seems very hypocritical that women are excluded from the games in some countries when the games were created to spark equality and oneness throughout the world. I think that if someone's dream is to play in the games then there is no one that has the right to stop them. If they work hard and train, then they should be able to compete. However that is my opinion, it is a very westernized thought, that everyone is equal, but in other parts of the world religions and cultures teach people that men and women aren't equal, and that men are superior to women. Hopefully the Olympic games can help break those cultural barriers and create gender equality for all.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"51174338","dateCreated":"1330638699","smartDate":"Mar 1, 2012","userCreated":{"username":"raveym","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/raveym","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/51174338"},"dateDigested":1532140606,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Raven's Response","description":"I realize that countries around the world do not treat women with respect nor give them equal rights. The purpose of the Olympics is to bring all the different cultures of the world together and show off what they got.
