I believe she can be both feminine and masculine depending on the setting that she is in. For example, on the soccer field she is viewed as masculine, but in modeling and dancing with the stars she is viewed as feminine. This belief that athletes are more masculine is a false assumption. There are not many athletes that are seen as beautiful, but it's evident that Hope Solo is definitely worth watching. She is pretty and is feminine in my view. She is now put into the position of being a model to young girls pursuing their dreams of being a soccer star.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"43344460","dateCreated":"1317275141","smartDate":"Sep 28, 2011","userCreated":{"username":"dupauli","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/dupauli","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/43344460"},"dateDigested":1532141277,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Current Event Response","description":"I think this article is interesting because although Hope Solo is fit, she is still criticized as not feminine enough for the dancing. That is because she is an athlete and is muscular unlike the other women on the show who are not in sports. I believe that Hope Solo is in a way feminine because she is very pretty for a woman in sports and also she has done some modeling where she poses in more feminine ways. The show stereotypes her for being an athletic woman that is not so much feminine and that could negatively influence the younger women watching the show.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"43333066","dateCreated":"1317254221","smartDate":"Sep 28, 2011","userCreated":{"username":"kekoakat","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/kekoakat","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/43333066"},"dateDigested":1532141277,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Hope solo","description":"This article was interesting to me because it made some valid points but other parts were somewhat disturbing. Soccer is a fairly aggressive and dangerous sport as evidenced by the seemingly constant injuries that Womens soccer players have, so a certain degree of masculinity is necessary to preform well in a game. This is different from dancing because when dancing, even men need to be fluid and soft in their motions, because of the nature of dancing. Some may define this fluid soft motion as "feminine." So expecting a womens soccer player to have a difficult time transitioning between the two activities is justified. But what makes this article bothersome is the fact that at times instead of saying she should be more feminine it states she should be more ladylike. This is interesting because it implies that sports where strength and aggression is necessary are not for women, and activities like dancing are not for men. The second interesting part in the article is where she states "there is too much muscle in that arm to be pretty." Though this article makes a valid point in the difference between soccer and dancing, much of its word choice shows a gendered view towards certain activities.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"43311558","dateCreated":"1317233189","smartDate":"Sep 28, 2011","userCreated":{"username":"carinada","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/carinada","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/43311558"},"dateDigested":1532141277,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Current Event Response","description":"This article talks about how the show does have problems with stereotyping female athletes. I feel that it is true that people associate female athletes with being masculine just because they are more fit and a tad bit more muscular than the "red carpet" women. Just because she is an athlete, it doesn't mean that she should be treated different than the other women on the show. I watched the result show last night and I realized that she had a very sporty and some what of a masculine dance. She had to perform in an outfit that looked like a soccer jersey and pants that looked like soccer shorts. After her performance, there was a woman who performed in a beautiful white gown. This shows that she is really being stereotyped.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"43311554","dateCreated":"1317233187","smartDate":"Sep 28, 2011","userCreated":{"username":"carinada","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/carinada","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/43311554"},"dateDigested":1532141277,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Current Event Response","description":"This article talks about how the show does have problems with stereotyping female athletes. Just because she doesn't look like the other ballroom dancers or have the same style, doesn't mean that she can't dance just as well. In some cases, being muscular can help women to show strength through dance. Although the Viennese Waltz is a very "feminine" dance that is supposed to show tenderness, sensitivity, and beauty, the judges should be glad that they are able to see the waltz from a more athletic standpoint. Being athletic doesn't make Hope any less of a woman. She just expresses a different side of femininity than most women in the world of dance.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"43285736","dateCreated":"1317200988","smartDate":"Sep 28, 2011","userCreated":{"username":"brpham","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/brpham","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/43285736"},"dateDigested":1532141278,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Current Event Response","description":"Hope Solo has some crazy moves on the field, so why can't it be translated onto the dance floor? The article is saying that Hope Solo needs to act more 'feminine' in order to deliver the sensual message that the female dancer expresses, but only because they know that she is an athlete. Would they perhaps say the same things had they not known that bit of information? There were women on the show\/are on the show who did not model the perfect feminine physique, whether it be body type, shape, height etc, but there are no criticism like Hope Solo's. One of the reasons I found this intriguing was because as a soccer player myself, I am a huge fan of Hope Solo and the Women's National Team and I also know what it's like to be an athlete. I think that Hope Solo is an interesting case though, because she has such a pretty face, which I think is unusual in professional women athletes. Personally, I think that she looks like a model, however, due to her more athletic body type, society disagrees. The fact that the judges of Dancing With the Stars told Solo that she needed to have a more feminine touch when dancing could be interpreted in different ways. I think they could say the same thing to someone who was not an athlete, but was more forceful than the norm. However, I do believe that because being an athlete is what makes Hope Solo who she is, they were more inclined to relate what they saw to what they know about her. Although the judges believe that Solo's athletic background is causing her downfall, I believe that it is actually the athlete in her that could help her to win the competition. This is because she is so used to taking direction and executing it under pressure, that it should come easy to her. As for her looks, I was glad to see that she was un-phased by the comments and knows that her body type is normal for what she does, and that she is confident about it.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"43284498","dateCreated":"1317195416","smartDate":"Sep 28, 2011","userCreated":{"username":"saphyre_rezentes","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/saphyre_rezentes","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/43284498"},"dateDigested":1532141278,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Current Event Response","description":"I too found the article very interesting. I was actually lucky enough to watch "Dancing With The Stars" and I got to see Hope Solo dance. After she and her partner danced, however; I found it rude that the judges actually said that Hoe was too "athletic" and "masculine". Yes, she is a soccer player and she does have a fit body, but that does not mean she can't be feminine, girly, and a good dancer. I agree that dancing and playing soccer are two totally different sports, and one may involve being more on the athletic side than the other, but that has nothing to do with the people doing it. Just because a woman plays a more physical sport does not make them less feminine. The game and the player are two different things. You can't judge the player based on the sport. Yes, maybe in order to be a good player then one must be athletic and physical and even aggressive, but off the field or court, players tend to have a whole different side. Just because a female is more masculine on th court does not make her masculine as a person everywhere else. People nowadays are so hooked on to looking at female athletes as masculine, that they tend to be close-minded about the female's other sides, which can be femine. And yes, to be a dancer, females are usually more feminine but that does not mean someone who plays sports can't be just as good as a regular feminine dancer.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"43284320","dateCreated":"1317194274","smartDate":"Sep 28, 2011","userCreated":{"username":"mieminami","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/mieminami","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/43284320"},"dateDigested":1532141278,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Current Event Response","description":"Hope Solo is an amazing athlete, but I believe she can be a good dancer also. Just because a woman is a talented athlete, doesn't mean her abilities to be a ballroom dancer are hindered. I think the judges, media, and her are being too hard on herself.
