I understand that maybe from a business point of it may not make enough money but it is still the beginning for a lot of these women skaters. It's sad that they aren't given a shot. I hope that someone can come along who is willing to back women's skating financially so that it has a fair shot to make it. When I first tread this article I was stunned that, at first, they would have this on a very popular sports station. Not only because there are many viewers but because there are just as many male viewers as there are female. It's disheartening to see that women are still being looked down upon in certain circumstances. Women work just as hard as men do to achieve there goals and dreams and it's sad to see that these specific women are not getting the credit for it by participating in the X-Games. I also find this article relevant because we do have Hunter as a classmate who is an extremely talented skateboarder and I know for her this may be difficult to grasp because it might be one of her dreams to be in the X-games someday.
I think the people that run X Games are completely wrong, and I actually think its funny that they think they can just take out women's skateboarding and nobody will care or complain about it. Its unfair for the girls first of all, and what they did was cruel. When they first allowed girls to compete, I'm sure so many people were ecstatic, especially the girls. And when they take out the girls competition completely, that's just like a slap in the face, or like teasing a dog with a toy and never throwing it. That is absolutely cruel and selfish of X Games. They honestly have no legit reason for canceling the girl's competition. Sports should be about friendly competitions and having fun. Its sick to think that people would still choose making money over allowing kids to have fun and compete. The fact that the X Games knew that skateboarding is often portrayed as a male dominated sport, and they wanted to change that to start including females, is disgracefully, and ultimately makes them look like hypocrites.
I think the people that run X Games are completely wrong, and I actually think its funny that they think they can just take out women's skateboarding and nobody will care or complain about it. Although this move is a step back in terms of gender equality, I feel that ESPN made the right choice. It does not make sense that ESPN should continue to support a sport if the talent pool and interest in the sport is declining. According to ESPN, “the women's vert discipline struggled to sustain a viable competitive tour. Finally, the X Games was the only remaining major competition.” If this is true, I feel that ESPN should not be forced to continue supporting a dying sport. Although I know little about sports in general, I feel that ESPN should use the money allocated for the the women’s vert and park events to up the prize pool of a growing women’s sport. One of the biggest differences between men’s sports and women’s sports is the amount of money and time invested in the sport. By increasing the prize pool for a trending women’s sport, the competitiveness would rise and people would be more inclined to watch it. That is why I think that ESPN’s money would be better spent supporting a growing women’s sport than supporting a dying one.
I have never seen a real life skating competition before. But the tricks that the girls were doing in the short preview to the underexposed documentary were crazy!! I think it is a shame that the X Games are taking out women's events. The whole reason that women's skating isn't as big as men's skating is because they have less coverage. How are they supposed to be seen and discovered if they are taken out of the games?! I think that more people are realizing that women can compete with men in skating. Also that they are not cutting events because they feel women are not as talented, but because of economic issues. Right now men's skating brings in more money so that is what they are going to show. I hope that women's skating builds a larger fan base and that the women are given a fair opportunity in the skating industry.
I found this article shocking since I know a lot of talented female skaters. I think that this desision by the group in charge of planning the X-games probabley stems from the fact that they do not see many marketing opportunities in showing the skating, since not many females skate, and/or watch skating. Competitions like the X-games should not be about making money and marketing, they should be about showcasing the skills of the athletes , which women certainly have.
When I read that the woman sports industry is moving backwards I paused and thought to myself, why? I think today's sports industries should have increased numbers in woman athletes. I believe that the United States was trying to help equality in sports, but after reading the article and watching the film my mind seems to think else wise. I have so many questions about this problem. One is why doesn't the X Games industry except woman to skateboard.? If the United States is trying to build a stronger base for equality between genders in Sports than why take out woman skateboarding? Woman have different structures than most men, but I think skateboarding is two gender sport. I think skateboarding is a sport similar to figure skating, it requires grace and sometimes nasty moves.
Skateboarding is one of the few sports which men and women are neck in neck.
