Many people, especially girls, are already self-conscious about their looks so making them wear spandex just makes some people worry even more and discourages them from participating in those particular activities. Even though I don't play volleyball, I used to dance so sometimes we had to wear tight shorts. However, unless it was absolutely necessary to wear them, I would always practice in more loose fitting shorts. I never wanted to worry about whether they would ride up while I dance or if they looked unflattering. Therefore, I agree with the author that participating in activities should be based on people's interest and their athleticism not their physical image.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"67041508","dateCreated":"1397212210","smartDate":"Apr 11, 2014","userCreated":{"username":"frpaulo","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/frpaulo","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/67041508"},"dateDigested":1532140612,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"CE#5","description":"I don't play sports, but I do own spandex shorts for when I do want to work out. I feel comfortable in them because I don't give a crap about what people think of my body, I but i do understand that other girls may not feel comfortable in something deemed to be overly revealing. It's understandably distracting, as well, so if girls don't want to wear them, they shouldn't be forced to do so. Uniforms are restrictive (that's a whole other topic though). But people need to understand that some girls wear these spandex shorts for comfort and not to show off. In general, it's a matter of comfort, not aesthetics.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"67040612","dateCreated":"1397204897","smartDate":"Apr 11, 2014","userCreated":{"username":"Taokemur","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/Taokemur","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/67040612"},"dateDigested":1532140612,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"CE #5","description":"Swimmers don't really worry about wearing pants. Or tops for that matter. At swim meets, all we do is wear our swim suits, and sweatpants and a jacket to cover it. But, at most clubs practices, girls will wear short spandex shorts to their land workouts. I am guilty myself of owning two pairs of short spandex shorts even though I don't even play volleyball! I can't help it; its a trend. When I first bought them, my dad was shocked that I actually wore it just like that and not under regular exercise shorts or a skirt. I'm sure tons of guys go to watch girls\/womens volleyball just for the short spandex. I hate to say this but I wasn't surprised when I read that girls have eating disorders when agonizing over how they look in the short spandex. I can understand how girls must feel to make their bodies "skinny" and "beautiful" in those stupid spandex shorts. I think the excuse for those shorts about the net thing makes sense but at the same time, its selfish for all those people who enjoy seeing girls in tight clothes. I think the girls on volleyball teams should get to vote on what kind of uniform they wear. And if there's a girl who is really uncomfortable with it then the team should support her by wearing baggier clothes. When I was young and I didn't know about the trends and what "girly girls" wore, I use to go everywhere in long baggy basketball shorts. I remember one day looking around and realizing that those shorts were uncool and not girly. After that day, I never wore basketball shorts again; I threw them all away. Sometimes, I regret that because I remember how comfortable I was in those basketball shorts (physically and emotionally) and how uncomfortable and insecure I feel when I wear the spandex to workout. What would this world look like with everyone in baggy clothes?","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"67040492","dateCreated":"1397203249","smartDate":"Apr 11, 2014","userCreated":{"username":"rearakaw1","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/rearakaw1","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/67040492"},"dateDigested":1532140612,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"CE#5","description":"It never occurred to me that wearing spandex shorts as volleyball uniforms have become a big issue. Mostly because of the fact that girls don't just wear them in volleyball, but in other sports. I understand that it can affect a girl's own perceptions about themselves, and it might be incredibly uncomfortable to play in them, however, many girls feel comfortable and actually prefer to wear them in other sports. I assume they feel comfortable because they walk out to practice in them.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"67040392","dateCreated":"1397202895","smartDate":"Apr 11, 2014","userCreated":{"username":"Mekegans","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/Mekegans","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/pic\/1395131025\/Mekegans-lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/67040392"},"dateDigested":1532140613,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"CE #5","description":"As a swimmer who is expected to wear one of the smallest, tightest, athletic uniforms in the athletic world on a daily basis, I can see both sides to this argument. However, I can also see how a sport like swimming may be in little different circumstance than volleyball due to the fact that it is expected that a swimmer wear something with the least amount of drag possible due to physics, while volleyball is a sport that doesn't have to worry about such technicalities. I understand that comfort is a priority--just look at what gymnasts wear!--and I know that to perform your best you have to feel your best, physically and emotionally. Which brings up a point, what if players don't feel comfortable or secure in tight clothing? Wouldn't that work against the whole purpose of have stretchy material that conforms to your every curve? In my experience, not many athletes complain about their uniform, it's simply all part of the sport and culture, they are usually surrounded by it so much that it doesn't even phase them. I feel like the only people who tend to be upset with uniforms are those looking in. Recently USA swimming began enforcing a rule about how much the bottom portion of a swim suit covers a female swimmer's bottom. As swimmers we were never really phased by our uniform or how some girls decided to wear theirs, the people who were upset were refs or spectators. We were more upset that there was such a rule and that we were being judged by how we wore our suits. I feel like it is completely up to the personal comfort of the athlete.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"67040334","dateCreated":"1397202233","smartDate":"Apr 11, 2014","userCreated":{"username":"Kelinatw","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/Kelinatw","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/67040334"},"dateDigested":1532140613,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"CE #5","description":"I have played volleyball for about ten years now and I have definitely grown accustomed to spandex. Also, volleyball is not by any means the only sport that has people wearing tight and short clothes. Track people use spandex all the time while running jumping and all kinds of other activities. Why? Because it really is just an innovation in clothing technology that helps people to move freely. I mean, even football players wear extremely tight clothing all over their bodies because it helps them to perform at the highest level possible. I know that I'm biased because I'm a guy but I think that people should look at it with more of a performance beard view rather than a social or sexual one.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"67039568","dateCreated":"1397193768","smartDate":"Apr 10, 2014","userCreated":{"username":"Syhalcro","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/Syhalcro","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/67039568"},"dateDigested":1532140613,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Ce 5","description":"After reading this article I totally agree! If guys are allowed to wear semi baggy board shorts why can't girls? The excuse to prevent hitting the net is very minor. I don't useably wear spandex, but only wear it when playing basketball but under longer shorts. Personally I am not comfortable wearing shorts shorter than mid thigh. I don't play sports so I am not too familiar with what is comfortable\/uncomfortable to play in. However, in ballet, every girl AND boy is required to wear a leotard and tights. Everything shows in this attire and if you aren't fit, it's embarrassing. I understand the argument the author is making. Girls really shouldn't have to wear shorts that make them feel uncomfortable if they don't have to. Athletics should be a gender neutral area. Unfortunately, our society still forces us to gender ourselves. It's wonderful more opportunities are being given to women to play sports and participate in this supposedly male dominated field. However, women will have to face the repercussions of being in a male dominated society. For volleyball girls, this unfortunately means the length of their spandex shorts. Hopefully one day the world can look past the superficiality of women's bodies and recognize the strength and power that lives within us.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"67038414","dateCreated":"1397185220","smartDate":"Apr 10, 2014","userCreated":{"username":"HoakaleiDawson","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/HoakaleiDawson","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/67038414"},"dateDigested":1532140613,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"CE #5","description":"I play volleyball. I've wear the tights. And I remember the transition from basketball shorts to spandex. Playing at a young age that's all I knew, basketball shorts. I never minded them until competitive volleyball came around the corner. I refused to wear the tight, skimpy, bathing suits bottoms we were forced to wear, but after a few years I grew out of the hatred for them. It wasn't until my first volleyball tournament I realized how comfortable they were and that it really didn't affect my play at all. I became self conscious the moment I stepped off the court and saw everyone around me just stare... at my butt! In the mainland especially, some people don't have a filter when they open up their mouthes and literally can say the nastiest things about a girls butt. Over time though, I really don't care what people say and if they do say something, I turn around and say something right back! Plus I've realized my uniform covers more than some girls outfits.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]}],"more":true},"comments":[]},"http":{"code":200,"status":"OK"},"redirectUrl":null,"javascript":null,"notices":{"warning":[],"error":[],"info":[],"success":[]}}
