I do not support nor do I oppose the idea of transgender people. For me it is a very touchy subject. I do however agree with the fact that the parents supported their child all the way through his\/her transition. I believe that sometimes parents need to let their children do what makes them happy, and be there for support, even though they may not necessarily approve. Wyatt\/Nicole was also very brave throughout the whole change. I thought that the dad's response was interesting: "I have to tell you, Kelly\u2019s the leader in our family...I just went with the flow." This isn't usually what a typical husband would openly admit, especially if he had a lot of pride. Could it be that Nicole's change occurred because of her father's compliant behavior toward Kelly? He\/She never really had a father figure, and therefore wanted to be a girl because she had a lot of power of the father. Although a very possible option, this topic was very uncomfortable for me, because I believe that God made everybody a certain way for a reason. I think that if God had wanted Wyatt to be a girl, he would have given him a girl's body.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"50427228","dateCreated":"1329124537","smartDate":"Feb 13, 2012","userCreated":{"username":"kichock","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/kichock","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/50427228"},"dateDigested":1532140771,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Kamea's Response","description":"Why aren't girls looked upon differently for playing with toys that are considered "male" such as action figures and swords. I was aware that at a young age some children feel different about there sexuality then others, however, I never realized that at such a young age a child can know they aren't a boy or they aren't a girl. It's amazing to see how strong Nicole was when she realized that she wasn't the right gender. The strength Nicole has and had to stand up for who she truly was is amazing and I never thought someone so young could ever be able to do so. Watching Nicole's parents go through this as well is very humbling. The fact that they understood there child's needs and did everything they could to help her is truly incredible. I believe strongly in finding your true identity and I think what Nicole did was the right thing to do and what her parents were helping her do as well. However, hearing about the school Nicole and her brother went to and what occurred there shocked me. I think schools, of all places, should be a safe place for students to go and feel welcome, not feel different. I think it's right that a law suit was held against the school for there unjust actions. Overall, this article opened my eyes about children everywhere and how they should show there true identities, just as Nicole did, in order to express who they truly are. I think Nicole and her family are very inspiring and need to continue to share there story with other families as well.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"49974094","dateCreated":"1328213970","smartDate":"Feb 2, 2012","userCreated":{"username":"jolike","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/jolike","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/49974094"},"dateDigested":1532140771,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Jona's Response","description":"This article was shocking, interesting and to be honest a little sad. Sad to think that the way you we're born defines the type of person you will become. Nicole and Jonas share identical appearances, however view themselves as individuals in the sense that Nicole was born with the hormones of a girl and Jonas with the hormones of a boy. In my opinion this article was disgusting because people shouldn't ridicule kids because of the sexuality or their outlook on life, due to the fact that they dress, act or look differently then what society makes it out to be. People in the United States along with the world should have the freedom to express their sexuality in any way they want, and not be judged for it.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"49973710","dateCreated":"1328213455","smartDate":"Feb 2, 2012","userCreated":{"username":"nisteine","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/nisteine","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/49973710"},"dateDigested":1532140772,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Nick's Response","description":"I found this article very interesting. Personally I thought that the article touched upon a really difficult subject for parents. To me I found that it must have been really difficult for Wyatt, or "Nicole's" parents to choose between allowing him to express his desires freely, and trying to change him so that he could be accepted by society. In the end I was impressed with "Nicole's" parent's decision to support him. I was also very impressed with the fact that "Nicole's" identical twin brother supported him so much, even though he probably was ridiculed for it. It took a lot of maturity on his part. It is very unfortunate that "Nicole" was bullied for her actions, because to "her" she was born this way and could not control what she was. I was very impressed with "Nicole's" resilience, courage, and self awareness. I think it takes a lot of guts, and courage to stay true to oneself despite the pressure to conform to society.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"49963334","dateCreated":"1328203917","smartDate":"Feb 2, 2012","userCreated":{"username":"hpup17","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/hpup17","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/49963334"},"dateDigested":1532140772,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Hunter","description":"It must have been difficult for Nicole to grow up being compared to his twin brother. I wonder if the pregnancy (chemically) altered his biological make up. But still it took a lot of courage to face all of the struggles she had to go through (bullying) to become a girl. I think that many kids struggle with identity and curiosity about sexual orientation has a lot to do with it. I think it is amazing that Wyatt knew from a young age that he was a girl. He felt that he was a girl born in the wrong body. Through enormous amounts of courage and bravery, Wyatt accepted the fact that he was a girl and changed his name to Nicole. I thought it was great how much his identical twin brother and eventually his parents supported her and understood what she was going through. It must have been a difficult and unusual circumstance to overcome for Nicole and her family. Unfortunately, the bulling that Nicole faced added to the social pressure and confusion. Through their strength and love for one another, Nicole and her family have become an inspiration. I have never personally met a person that was transgender nor have I heard much about people like Nicole. I believe that information is power and everyone needs to learn more about transgender people.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"49947028","dateCreated":"1328175166","smartDate":"Feb 2, 2012","userCreated":{"username":"heyjordan","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/heyjordan","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/49947028"},"dateDigested":1532140772,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Jordan's Response","description":"This article was very interesting, shocking, and inspiring. It was very moving to read about how a family is so supportive of such a controversial topic, transgender children. Wyatt has so much courage in standing up for what she believes in. Specifically, her name showed me her true femininity. The change from Wyatt to Nicole is not just a name change, it is a identity change. Nicole is not just a name that tells others she is a girl, it solidifies Nicole's true self of being a female. Not only was it shocking to read about Nicole's change in gender, but I was also surprised that research has shown that plenty of children have had thoughts of transgender operation. The GeMS clinc is a great outlet for children to seek attention on help. I think that people are striving to attend to children needs no matter what the issue is and that is very reassuring. The bullying issue seemed realistic, but to think that some parent would take the issue to a court level is preposterous. Issues such as Nicole's should solely be left up to her and her families decision, not some random person. Overall, I think Nicole is doing a great thing in what she believes in and I hope all the best for the Maines family.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"49946502","dateCreated":"1328171191","smartDate":"Feb 2, 2012","userCreated":{"username":"cacaron","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/cacaron","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/49946502"},"dateDigested":1532140772,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Camille's Response","description":"This story was amazingly inspirational. I've never knowingly known a transgender, and I think sadly there are a lot of horrible stereo types associated with them. Stories of such people like Nicole need to be spread so that people can better understand transgenders. I think it was described best as Nicole was a girl who was simply born with a birth defect. It is sad that so much harm can be done to her simply as a result of the ignorance of others but she is just like any other girl. People fear the unknown and the fact is that we just don't know enough about people like Nicole, and I hope that changes soon. These people aren't sub human and they don't deserve to be treated as any less then we ourselves expect to be treated.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"49945978","dateCreated":"1328166632","smartDate":"Feb 1, 2012","userCreated":{"username":"tlau808","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/tlau808","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/49945978"},"dateDigested":1532140772,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Taylor's Thoughts","description":"This story is a great story of perseverance. It must have been really hard for Nicole to grow up with all the teasing and bullying she must have received. It is amazing how medical treatments and technology has grown, which makes procedures like these possible. Something stood out to me in the beginning of the article, the writer talks about Wyatt's brother being "all boy" liking spiderman, action figures, pirates and swords. I admit that when I was young i used to play with toy swords and guns too, but now swords action figures and superheroes have been built up to symbolize boys, and the male gender. Not all boys play with swords, or love super heroes, yet if you are "all boy" you are interested in these types of things. Also when the family tries to make Wyatt more manly, and l more like normal boys his age they give him action figures, and enter him in sports. Girls play with action figures too, and do sports too. But for some reason society thinks that sports are a mans thing, and action figures are for boys. This social construct is one that is apparent all over today's society. I think that is has a lot to do with power, more specifically male power. Superheroes, action figures, pirates, and swords all have one thing in common, power. They are symbols of strength and power. Strength and power are both very closely related to men. This article is another example of how society is built around social constructs.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]}],"more":true},"comments":[]},"http":{"code":200,"status":"OK"},"redirectUrl":null,"javascript":null,"notices":{"warning":[],"error":[],"info":[],"success":[]}}
