Human trafficking has been going on for quite some time now, and I am fully against it. I don't understand why they take young girls who haven't even gone through puberty yet, that is just disgusting. I feel the police and investigators should team up to help locate and rescue the young girls and women in captivity. However, I like how society is coming up with shelters and programs to help the young women and girls recover from all the trauma they went through and help them to get back on their feet.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"42945960","dateCreated":"1316679367","smartDate":"Sep 22, 2011","userCreated":{"username":"tatortakahashi","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/tatortakahashi","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/42945960"},"dateDigested":1532140785,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Kasey's Response","description":"After reading this article, i was surprised to find out that there was sex trafficking in Hawaii. I too saw the movie taken and i thought that the idea of sex trafficking was farfetched in the United states. I knew that sex trafficking existed, but i thought it was only in the third world countries. what really was disgusting about this article was the eleven year olds that are being recruited. I feel so bad for the women that are trapped in the brothels by pimps. It is so sad that they have no other choice but to comply with the pimps. I am happy that the PASS has done a lot to help stop sex trafficking but it is gonna take more than just helping two dozen women. I hope they pass laws against sex trafficking soon, and maybe police start enforcing them on kuhio street","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"42944764","dateCreated":"1316674722","smartDate":"Sep 21, 2011","userCreated":{"username":"samiam94","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/samiam94","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/42944764"},"dateDigested":1532140785,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Sam's Response","description":"I was so shocked by this article. I have watched Taken and couldn't believe that something like that would happen in what we paradise. I was really distraught to hear that the average age of girls that are taken is twelve. What I want to know is how are pimps able to sell girls that young. Can't the buyers tell that the girl is under 18? I was happy though that the group PASS is working on getting laws for pimps in the sex trafficking. I think many parents know about sex trafficking. For example, my mom does and she was the one that made me watch Taken so that way I knew about this kind of stuff. My mom feels that both guys and girls are vulnerable to trafficking. Its just really sad that so many girls lives' are ruined due to these selfish and greedy pimps.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"42938850","dateCreated":"1316661839","smartDate":"Sep 21, 2011","userCreated":{"username":"Adriann28","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/Adriann28","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/42938850"},"dateDigested":1532140785,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Adrian's Response ","description":"Like Malia I have also watched the movie Taken and at the time I was completely unaware that sex trafficking occurs here in Hawaii. It is completely mind blowing that these traffickers can make such a profit off an innocent girl's sexual intercourse.

Even if Hawaii doesn't have legit laws against Sex Trafficking, that does NOT make it acceptable! I'm curious as to how the business even makes so much money, don't the people who are "buying" these women have a conscience?! The topic of selling a woman's body disgusts me, but to know that a number of them are FORCED into this is apalling. Something that struck me about the article was a quote: "The youngest girl is only eleven years old" She's only eleven for crying out loud! Where are her parents?! asdfghjkl. Now that i know that this is happening in Hawaii, it kind of makes me feel ashamed to be here.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"42921324","dateCreated":"1316645743","smartDate":"Sep 21, 2011","userCreated":{"username":"Malia.","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/Malia.","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/42921324"},"dateDigested":1532140785,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Malia's Response","description":"This article was very eye-opening, I have seen the movie "Taken" and heard of sex trafficking, but did not realize that it occured here in Hawai'i. Now I understand why my mom is hesitant about me going to dinner in Waikiki at night. I think it is terrible that girls as yougn as 12 years old are dragged into this trap, it is simply immoral to treat a human being as property, as clearly exhibited in the abolishment of slavery in America. I think the fact that we are one of the few states without strict policies against human trafficking reflects poorly on Hawai'i's law enforcement system. I think it is important for more light to be shed on this situation, the more informed the people are the more likely they will be to become upset and demand change. Because tourists are espically prone to be targetting for kidnap, it is probably detrimental in the long run to the tourism industry we rely on so heavily in Hawaii.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"42920794","dateCreated":"1316645340","smartDate":"Sep 21, 2011","userCreated":{"username":"marinahirokane","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/marinahirokane","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/42920794"},"dateDigested":1532140785,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Marina's Response","description":"I found this article so interesting and disturbing, especially because I am so used to seeing Waikiki as a major tourist attraction, and always glowing. It is a hot spot where families and couples go to spend holidays and vacations. I have heard stories about the dangers of Waikiki at night, but never stories like this. It is unbelievable that young girls are forced into this industry. If they refuse, they are abused and raped into submission until they agree. This is cruel and unfair because many girls with bright futures will be ruined and never be able to see happiness or the independence of adulthood. What amazes me is that these "pimps" are so bold to kidnap young teen tourists away from their families and transform them into prostitutes. Overall, this article was very interesting because it is literally happening in a community less than 5 miles from where I am sitting. This scares me and makes me appreciate what our city and county is trying to do as they approach solutions to this issue.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"42915220","dateCreated":"1316639778","smartDate":"Sep 21, 2011","userCreated":{"username":"xoxomika","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/xoxomika","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/42915220"},"dateDigested":1532140785,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Mika's Response","description":"I feel sex trafficing on the streets of Waikiki is disgusting, repulsive, and illegal. The girls who are most vulnerable are the ones who feel there is no way out, and no person to seek help from. Those who have a low self esteem are also more vulnerable. In my opinion, price is determined by the physical appearance of the girl, if she is more sexually attractive, she will probably be worth more than one who is not as sexually appealing. I doubt most parents have knowledge of what their daughter is doing because what parent would condone sexual trafficking, especially if their own child is involved. People who see them on the streets and do not report them are not fully aware of the realities of sex trafficking and what the community can do to help is to become informed about the situation so that next time if they witness this, they will report it and hopefully turn those girls onto the right track so they do not ruin their lives by depriving themselves of education, class, and a normal life.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"42907700","dateCreated":"1316632823","smartDate":"Sep 21, 2011","userCreated":{"username":"Kekuroda","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/Kekuroda","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/42907700"},"dateDigested":1532140785,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Kelsey's Response","description":"After reading this article, I was also horrified and disgusted. I had no idea that human trafficking was taking place in our own city, especially somewhere so close to our school, in Waikiki. It saddened me to read that these poor women were forced into the business of trafficking and too scared to seek help. I was also ashamed that Hawaii is one of the few states that has not set any laws against trafficking, especially since it occurs so frequently on our very own streets. I agree with Catherine that human trafficking is equivalent to slave trading and it is horrific. Although PASS is trying to put an end to sex trafficking in Hawaii, the longer it takes to outlaw it, the more women and young girls are getting physically and mentally scarred. It is all of our responsibilities to help put an end to sex trafficking completely.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"42907574","dateCreated":"1316632720","smartDate":"Sep 21, 2011","userCreated":{"username":"miki10","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/miki10","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/42907574"},"dateDigested":1532140786,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Miki's Respnse","description":"After I read this article, I was shocked and appalled that sex trafficing is such a big issue in Hawaii.
