After reading the article, the movement is more about educating people about rape. I think the name of the movement is confusing because i think "slut" has its own story. The definition of the word slut is a slovenly women or a promiscuous woman. I don't think slut is an appropriate word for what they are trying say for this movement. However, I understand that in today's society, the word has different meaning. So shouldn't we educate what the really means because everyday people toss the word around as a joke. I think the name of the movement should change but I really like the purpose of the walk.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"62088186","dateCreated":"1366927003","smartDate":"Apr 25, 2013","userCreated":{"username":"kechoy","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/kechoy","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/62088186"},"dateDigested":1532140811,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Response","description":"The word slut makes me think of a girl who dresses skimpy and sleeps around a lot. I know that my idea of a slut is wrong however I can't help it. The concept of the slutwalk is a great idea! I do not think slut can be redefined positively, almost like the term player cannot be redefined. And then I got confused when I realized it was a movement for women who were sexually victimized. I think it's a terrible name. I get that they are trying to change the derogatory meaning of the word "slut" but I think that's impossible and stupid. If you want to change the meaning of the word "slut" to something positive, it's like changing the word "fuck" to the word "love." You can't just go around saying, "I fuck you" because it's just not right. I don't think people would take them seriously with the term "slut" in the name. I think almost every girl in our school, let alone any high school, can say they've been called a slut before. Some are hurt by the term and others shake it off as a common insult. I think the name of these walks just helps to unload and ease the term "slut" to the point where it may not be as much of an insult, though I also believe that it will inevitably have a negative spin to it. It's very commonly used and that itself is unfortunate. The use of the word can be both inappropriate and in other ways appropriate. We live in a generation where nudity has become the norm, sex tapes have become worths millions of dollars, and advertisements of women in Bikini's\/minimal clothing have become appropriate to be shown in the windows of local malls. I can't say that these slut walks will work, because truthfully, I don't think it has a chance to change anything about the way society will view women. It's sad that people use these terms so loosely because they can be really hurtful. It gives a bad stereotype to girls who are very classy and respectful of the way they represent their sex.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"62071750","dateCreated":"1366877963","smartDate":"Apr 25, 2013","userCreated":{"username":"alyssaa2013","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/alyssaa2013","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/62071750"},"dateDigested":1532140811,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Response","description":"The word "slut" will always have a negative connotation despite it being used more or more casually, as in slutwalks. I think that the idea of these slutwalks is positive and encouraging and should be kept up. It is important to empower women and for such women to protest together. I'm not really sure how I feel about these protests being called slutwalks. I understand that people are trying to make the word slut seem not as degrading or negative but I don't think naming a protest this will change that. It is interesting to me that some women will openly call themselves sluts. To an extent, I admire this courage and confidence but on the other hand, I'm not sure it is a totally positive thing.
