It's amazing to see to what lengths people will go to when commiting crimes against other humans. I think that the bystanders were in shock, or somehow found themselves "mesmerized" by the incident. I think that they were fascinated by what was going on and probably could not get themselves to register what was really going on. At the same time, I think that as citizens and witnesses to a butality, it is their duty to call 911. For schools to prevent similar incidents, I think that they should have security guards patrolling the campus; although I realize that this may be hard for public schools. During functions such as this one though, chaperones and police should have been stationed throughout the campus. I think that there should be harsher penalties for these crimes because the criminals are very young themselves, and without sufficient punishment, they'll end up back on the streets unphased by small penalties. I think that it's always hard with these laws, but it should always be evaluated case by case anyways. It's good to have these laws, but like in some other cases, kids under 18 are tried as adults because of the crime that they committed. I think that the final statement is not reassuring for sure. I would think that witnesses have a duty and would do the right thing, but I would also classify not reporting an incident as with holding information or something along the lines of "embedding a fugitve" because they are well aware of what's going on, but do nothing to promote justice.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"16183865","dateCreated":"1256942419","smartDate":"Oct 30, 2009","userCreated":{"username":"dekristin","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/dekristin","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/16183865"},"dateDigested":1532140831,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"off with their heads!","description":"Rape is never the answer. I think its terrible that no one called, but this shouldnt necessarily be considered a "sexist" act. YouTubers, remember when the video of the man being hit by multiple cars was THE video to see? No one did anything. People just watched him get hit by car after car. It cant just be women, its men too. The terrible thing about it though, is that she was raped, and not just raped, but gang raped. Those men should have some respect. Its bad enough she was violated by one man, but how about multiple men? Its that many times more traumatizing for her. Men, please let women keep what is sacred to them. At least give them a chance.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"16183193","dateCreated":"1256940633","smartDate":"Oct 30, 2009","userCreated":{"username":"bryap","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/bryap","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/16183193"},"dateDigested":1532140832,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Terrible","description":"That was just terrible how one 15 year old girl was raped while 20 people either watch and dont do anything about it. I mean dont they have a conscience. And poor thing her, she is probably going to be scarred for life. I really hope that the police can find the people who were invovled with the rape. I mean where were all of the staff during this time? I really hope these gang rapes decrease in the near future so this place would not be so dangerous.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"16182889","dateCreated":"1256939947","smartDate":"Oct 30, 2009","userCreated":{"username":"africanqueen","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/africanqueen","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/pic\/1251186290\/africanqueen-lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/16182889"},"dateDigested":1532140832,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"What has our world come to???","description":"When I firs heard of this event, I could hardly beleive what I was hearing. Not only was the gang rape terrible in its' self, the fact that viewers did nothing for this poor girl is even worse. It really makes you wonder what our world has come to when people decide to take pleasure in this type of event rather than help protect the victem. It said that not reporting an event of this sort for a child under 14 is illegal but really it should be illeagal for all ages. When, not only women but everyone, is taken advantage in this manner something must be done. I fear that the media and the environments we live in these days has had a terrible influence on the moral of humans. In video games, tv, and music demeaning someone or harming them has become a sign of strength and is praised. Women are constantly being seen as sex objects not people which leads to these types of events. Our world today is costantly being seen in a positive light but this event is wha it has sadly also become.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"16179849","dateCreated":"1256934527","smartDate":"Oct 30, 2009","userCreated":{"username":"spluther","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/spluther","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/16179849"},"dateDigested":1532140832,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"THE CHAIR!!!","description":"I think that this is absolutely horrible. The fact that a) the crimes would be committed and b) that people looked on without doing anything. If you see someone being raped, you don't stop and look on! You call the police (thankfully somebody did), and\/or you attack them! Find a branch, a brick, a lead pip, a knife, a gun, and stop the offenders! as for the police, I hope they catch all the criminals, and convict them! I hope they fry! I do! They should die for what they have done. In my book rape is an unforgivable sin, one that should be punished by death. Not painful death - just death. I am utterly horrified at the inhumanity of the rapists.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"16174717","dateCreated":"1256928540","smartDate":"Oct 30, 2009","userCreated":{"username":"nipeltze","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/nipeltze","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/16174717"},"dateDigested":1532140832,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Unbelievable","description":"The people who just stood around and watched the rape incident should be just as liable as the boys in the gang who raped her. There is no way any one of those gang members who participated and bystanders should get away without penalties and still call it justice. I was shocked that at least 20 people stood by and watch this happened without having the urge to call the police or to save the girl. Maybe they thought this wasn't that big of a deal because having sex was often seen on TV, or that stuff like this happened very often at school. We moved from one extreme to another, from conservative to too liberal and wild, and the main reason that caused this was the power of media that influenced teenagers in a bad way. I definitely think the law should extend to protect teenagers older than 14 years old and the witness who didn't do anything should be punished.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]}],"more":false},"comments":[]},"http":{"code":200,"status":"OK"},"redirectUrl":null,"javascript":null,"notices":{"warning":[],"error":[],"info":[],"success":[]}}
