Every is blessed with their own unique figures. Girls should not turn to the media or elsewhere to make themselves who they are. People are not supposed to be worried about how to look like a model on a magazine because it is not always realistic. In the article, it says how many people try to achieve a "Barbie-like" figure. It is sad that people want to do this because it is impossible. I believe that Barbie may be a factor in the way kids expect themselves to look, but i do not necessarily think they are focused on that at such a young age. I do not remember asking myself why my Barbie's hair was not like mine or why Barbie was so skinny unlike some others. I do not believe kids are worried about those things. Parenting plays a huge role on how kids see themselves because of how they raise them. The type of toys kids play with, for example, can dictate their attitudes toward their body if they only play with unrealistic items. Parents should pay attention to what kids think because that can greatly effect their future and life ahead.
There are two main things about this article that I find disturbing. The first is that beauty company's exploit the insecurities of women of all ages to sell there products. Beauty products are no longer about feeling good about yourself but instead feeling less inadequate compared to the models which are all over the media. This article pointed out the obvious fact that the use of models to cause a lack of self esteem is a conscious marketing tool by many company's.When a society comes to using belittlement as a sales tactic than something needs to be changed. The second thing that disturbed me was the statement that "In 2003, Teen magazine reported that 35 per cent of girls 6 to 12 years old have been on at least one diet." As far as I am concerned that part of childhood should not include the pressure of looking good. For most children this is before boys begin to like girls so the idea that 6 year old's are worrying about their appearance is terrible. Later in life, when heart conditions and clogged artery's begin to be a reality, then eating more healthy foods is probably a good idea, but when your aged between 6 and 12, your nutrition should be your parents worry, and kids this age should eat as much healthy foods as possible in order to grow strong. Its disturbing that adult women are that concerned about their appearance, so when young children start to feel society's pressure then we definitely have a problem.
It is sad to think that a woman compares herself everyday to other women to create a perfect body image. The fact is everyone was made to be different according to God, not to the media. The medias high standards made toward women degrade there confidence everyday. The modeling industry puts these women into unhealthy diet experiences just so that they will be accepted by the rest of society. The fact that women want to always change something in their appearance is saddening and that they should be happy the way they are.The perfect body image given out by the media has a big effect on the girls image. For example, if she sees women on TV that are beautiful because they are skinny and that are being put on this pedestal, its likely to believe that they will want to look like them. The media wether in the form of a magazine or on TV has to be perfect and every little imperfection makes that person less beautiful. Which is honestly quiet sad to think that girls need to be perfect because nobody is perfect. By being thin does not necessarily mean that your healthy. Because like models they take it to the extreme and become in fact to skinny.
Sad, but true, standards for women are getting tighter and tighter as time goes on. One of the easiest examples to compare are movies from the seventies and modern day movies. Aside from the black and white vs color, the apparel that the women are wearing in the older movies are much more conservative than more modern movies. The amount of dietary aids or quick-fix work-out machines commercials are getting to the point of unbearable. I couldn't care less about those commercials, but I could see how someone struggling with a weight issue would be inclined to buy a product that promises amazing results in little to no time, with a money-back guarantee on top of it all. The worst part is when women feel pressured to look better and go to extreme lengths to attain it, such as starvation, but in the end look much worse than they originally did, which was perfectly fine to begin with.
It is sad to think that a woman compares herself everyday to other women to create a perfect body image. I think that it is horrible that so many women are taking body shape and perfection to these extreme extents. I think that the Barbie doll, something that many young girls play with, is great as a toy, but not for a role model. It would be impossible for a human being to exist with the exact proportions and measurements of a Barbie doll. And this image that Barbie portrays is not that of perfection. I think that media has a huge influence on self perception, and that it in one of, if not the, leading cause of poor body image in women. They have these unattainable goals to reach in the shape of their body and the number on the scale, or the size of the dress. Although I think that it is important to stay fit, taking it to this level is harmful and dangerous. There are ways to help the situation however. One way is to promote a healthy lifestyle, without the extremes. I also think that in order for women to eradicate this image of perfection from their minds, media needs to take a step back and realize that people do follow their examples, sometimes past what is good for them.
perfect body" is nearly impossible to achieve yet nearly every girl falls victim to trying to meet it without even noticing sometimes. This is a stereotype that people are trying to stop yet the media continues to portray it by excluding those who do not meet the standard. I feel that it is a terrible standard and is unhealthy and detrimental to a persons health. However, I really am not sure if this problem can be fixed. While people constantly say how they are against it, the majority of woman look at themselves and notice their flaws and try to fix them in order to fit this image. It is a sad truth and I hope it changes. The media needs to stop trying to push this on people and we as woman need to stop thinking that this is the only way to be "attractive."
perfect girl/ woman" to be slim and thin. If God wanted us to be all skinny and thin, then that is what He would have made us. We were all born in different shapes and sizes and we should be proud of who we are and how we look. And it should not matter if a person isn't as slim as they should be because it is up to that person to decide how they want to look. Media should not make it seem that everyone should be slim like a barbie doll in order to be beautiful and satisfying. If a person is comfortable the way they are, then thats should be the only thing that matters. But when media comes in and tries to "set" and "own" the standards of how women should look, that is where the problems come in. Women start taking pills and going on diets which is in the long run very unhealthy. Then it will eventually lead to depression, stress, unhappiness, low self esteem, and low self pride. On the real, no one is perfect, not even a barbie doll itself. Being perfect is what you make of it. No one should tell you that you aren't beautiful because of how you look. There are hundreds and hundreds of different definitions of beautiful and society should not be the judges of that; YOU yourself should be. So if you aren't happy with how you look, change it (as best you can) either by eating healthier or excercising more. If you are happy with how you look, then don't change!
This article is very depressing but it is true. Unfortunately the media plays a great role in our society today especially for young teenagers. It is unfortunate to hear stories of people trying to starve themselves in order to be approved of their image; the image that is seen across magazines and advertisements. In advertisements, women see models have this media ‘perfect life’ and they crave to have the same. Women, along with men, become marionettes controlled by the hands of producers, magazine companies, etc. They believe if they could just be like those models in image, they could have what they have.

I have always been a strong supporter of seeing everything in different shapes and sizes but it is unfortunate to see that not everyone is on the same page as I. I was confused when I read that the Australian population approved of a plus size model on a magazine but companies did not. I always believed that the best companies, no matter what circumstance, follow the rule: “The Customer is Always Right.” Unfortunately in this scenario, the companies ignored the customers, or the Australian population, and went with their own opinions. On the other hand it is nice to see that advertisement companies, such as those in Quebec, are taking steps to including images that relate to the common buyer, such as less bone, less youth, less tan, and overall less Barbies.

It is unfortunate from a young age girls are given Barbies to play with. These dolls are just seen as toys to them but children play with their toys and act out scenarios that they imagine and want to act out. Soon these girls begin to take on the “Barbie” role. The image of the Barbie could greatly effect what a girl thinks she should look like in order to get her dream Ken, dream house, dream car, and dream clothes. This product is sold as a package for disaster to children.
This article was really sad.
