As I read the article, I was appalled. Why would someone want to wear this costume and say "im anorexia" ? I think it's a sick joke and inappropriate to wear. I understand that the company is trying to make money however I think they've taken it too far. The most interesting part of the article was that Dreamgirl's was a company run by women, for women. Women who are running the company think that anorexia is something someone would want to have? I think that costumes these days are all about the "look at me" concept, rather than the old Halloween where everyone would dress up as scary people. Anorexia is not something to joke around about. This is a real disorder and it's a problem for many people around the world.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"44210678","dateCreated":"1318544831","smartDate":"Oct 13, 2011","userCreated":{"username":"catchu909","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/catchu909","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/pic\/1317882302\/catchu909-lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/44210678"},"dateDigested":1532141275,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Catherine's Post","description":"After I read this article, I was horrified by the Anna Rexia costume. It not only mocks a serious eating disorder, in a way, it also gives young girls the impression that it can be "sexy" to have an eating disorder. As Grefe notes in the article, "Eating disorders have the highest mortality rate of any mental illness, and to think that someone that understood an eating disorder would actually buy this costume is an outrage." This quote relates to the changing perception of Halloween as a teenager grows older. As a child grows older, they are influenced by societal views and more often than not, they will start to perceive All Hallows Eve as an excuse for going out and partying versus celebrating a holiday that started off religious. It is understandable that children will alter their views as they get older but this is no excuse to make fun of a serious eating disorder that takes the lives of thousands of girls around the world each year. It is even worse that Dreamgirl was the first company to advertise this costume because Dreamgirl is supposed to be a role model, something that younger girls look up to. They are not supposed to promote such a serious issue- one that may ultimately be the cause of a young girl's anorexia because she feels like it's socially acceptable. I see the costume from a different light as well. Costumes give individuals a chance to express themselves freely. Some may take this as a free-pass to dress provocatively but others, may use this as a way to tell the world what they are hiding inside. Costumes, like masquerades, give individuals a certain air of anonymity which allows them to be something they're not or to showcase someone who they really are. I can go both ways with the Anna Rexia costume because I believe that there are girls in the world who have secretive eating disorders. They are ashamed of themselves and are scared that others will not accept them if they tell. Through this Anna Rexia costume, they are able to tell the world that they are anorexic so in a way, I see it as a cry for help. Whether the girls are able to receive help is another issue but deep down, they may hope that someone will notice and ask them about it. Personally, I do not think that this costume should be sold on the racks of any store and the girls who wear this costume either don't really realize the seriousness of an eating disorder or they are hoping someone will notice and help them. Whatever the reason may be, there are numerous other costume choices that they can pick that are more accepting and less mocking.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"44200264","dateCreated":"1318535764","smartDate":"Oct 13, 2011","userCreated":{"username":"tatortakahashi","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/tatortakahashi","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/44200264"},"dateDigested":1532141275,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Kasey's Response","description":"Anna Rexia? Clever name. When i first saw the title of the article, i didn't expect to see a costume for halloween. It is sad to see that the media has created an impossibly skinny image of what girls need to look like to be attractive. I think that anorexia is the worst alternative to losing weight. I honestly feel that any person can choose to be anorexic. It is sad to see that more girls are anorexic today, and i must put the blame on the media.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"44197670","dateCreated":"1318533260","smartDate":"Oct 13, 2011","userCreated":{"username":"miki10","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/miki10","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/44197670"},"dateDigested":1532141275,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Miki's Response","description":"After reading this article, I was surprised that a costume company would even consider this costume an appropiate costume to sell. As soon as I saw the picture of the costume I knew that something was wrong. No women or girl should wear this costume, not even for Halloweeen, because it is not funny and anarexia is a serious disorder which many girls die from everyday. By creating a costume that make it seem that anarexia is a joke or ok, is promoting to girls with anarexia that their disorder is ok and that the public think that the disorder is not serious. Even though the company claimed they did not mean to offend anybody, I still think that they were stupid just to think of an idea of such a costume. I would want the costume company directors to picture thier daughters, wife or neices in this costume and see if it is still a funny joke to them. I am glad that some costume stores have agreed to stop selling this costume in stores because by doing this, they are preventing this horrible message to be spread among young girls and women everywhere and informing that anarexia is a serious disorder and should not be made fun of.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"44188988","dateCreated":"1318526525","smartDate":"Oct 13, 2011","userCreated":{"username":"Adriann28","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/Adriann28","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/44188988"},"dateDigested":1532141275,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Adrian's Response","description":"I also found it completely shocking that people had the idea for making such a costume as "Anna Rexia'. First I feel like it is making anorexia seem like a small issue when really it is a life threatening issue for many teens. The people that have this disorder do not choose to have it. They are mentally ill and diagnosed with it. I also feel like the costume is portraying what is "sexy". It is appealing for women to dress up as an overly skinny person because that is what is considered beautiful today. Anorexia is a serious mental illness that should not be made into a "sexy" halloween costume.
\nI feel that this changes the holiday in a sense that it demeans the women out there that have this illness by making a costume out of it, which is basically making fun of them by dressing as a skeleton. Apart from the skeleton outfit, bone headband, and the measuring tape belt, i think the most demeaning part of the costume is the matching measuring tape choker.
\nYes, I strongly believe costume industries are taking dressing up too far. Making an illness like this into a costume is like making sexy cancer costumes. No one would want to wear it because it is ridiculing those who actually are actually affected.
\nThis affects women and their self esteem because of society's pressures to be skinny.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"44161024","dateCreated":"1318492686","smartDate":"Oct 13, 2011","userCreated":{"username":"samiam94","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/samiam94","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/44161024"},"dateDigested":1532141275,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Sam's Response","description":"I am shocked that a company would even produce something like this. I do think the controversy about this costume is interesting because in America we problems with both ends of the spectrum. For example, we have a huge problem with anorexia and obesity. Although Halloween is a day when people enjoy dressing up as things they are not, it is not okay to mock people with an eating disorder. This is yet another example of how the media and our society sends the message to girls and women that being thin is good, and the thinner you are the better. The only thing that I have trouble with, is why people recognize this costume as offensive when some similar ones go unnoticed. Costumes that mock obese ballerinas or mentally ill people in straight jackets are just as controversial, and yet the fact that its funny to see a fat ballet dancer or scary to see a crazy killer excuses these costumes from our reprimands. I think that there are many other costumes that also degrade women on halloween other than Anna Rexia that do not have articles written about them, although perhaps they should. If our society celebrates a day where people mock the overweight and the mentally will, is it really that surprising that girls with eating disorders are added to the list?","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"44160128","dateCreated":"1318489553","smartDate":"Oct 13, 2011","userCreated":{"username":"kaulawena","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/kaulawena","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/44160128"},"dateDigested":1532141276,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Ula Response","description":"This article is pretty shocking. I really cant believe any human being could even make fun about such a serious problem, espesically here in the United States. What was shocking to find out though, is that annarexia is the highest mortality rate, I didnt know that. I would have thought it was something esle, not annarexia. It is extremely offensive to me and I do not have an eating disorder so I can't even imagine how the people that do suffer from eating disorders feel. This costume is not only offensive, but it is also advertising that anorexia, and other eating disorders, are sexy. This makes women feel as if they should be skinnier and that the way to achieve this skinny goal is by not eating.
