I can think of many places that have secretaries and all of them are women. It is as a very popular job. I think secretarial work is so popular among women because it is something you don't always need a college degree for. Men who don't finish college often go into jobs in the labor work force, or they do things such as driving a truck. Women instead go into jobs such as secretarial work where they can sit behind a desk and do office work. To be a nurse or a teacher you need a college degree and so many don't ever get one. Secretarial work is a fairly well paying job you can get without a degree. If I had, had to come up with a different job that i thought was number one for women it would have been a nurse. My mom does not work so it is hard to say if the case is similar in my family. My dad is in the military and he provides for our family.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"62188172","dateCreated":"1367439685","smartDate":"May 1, 2013","userCreated":{"username":"dapascua","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/dapascua","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/62188172"},"dateDigested":1532140869,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"kama's response","description":"Reading this article made me realize that being a secretary is definitely a female dominated job. I've never went to a place where the secretary was a man. I can see that back then it was an intention to pay women less but now a days I think it's just the way society developed. The society developed in the way that being a secretary is a "women's" job. It's pretty shocking, but I don't believe that women are completely equal with men just yet. I think that women aren't trusted with the ability to hold a higher status job. I also don't think that it is fair for the amount of pay for women to be less than the average pay for men. 78 cents compared to the dollar is a huge difference and extremely unfair.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"62184724","dateCreated":"1367427525","smartDate":"May 1, 2013","userCreated":{"username":"Madimada","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/Madimada","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/62184724"},"dateDigested":1532140869,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Madi's Response ","description":"I remember reading this article when we had to post an article we found interesting on our blog site. When I first read it, I was very surprised to see that secretary is still the most common job for women. I think that secretaries are still the most common job for women because it is the most common job that is needed and their are a lot of job opportunities for that position. Before this article, I thought the most common job for women was maybe a nurse or a teacher because women are still making their way through the "glass ceiling." I don't think it's ever possible to completely get rid of a stereotype, which is why at times, things may still be the same. I think that even though it is the same top job since the 50's times for women have changed greatly. At least today some women are seen as company owners and other top leaders, although it is not that common it is still able to happen.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"62181308","dateCreated":"1367417226","smartDate":"May 1, 2013","userCreated":{"username":"keoshita","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/keoshita","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/62181308"},"dateDigested":1532140869,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Kelis' Response","description":"In my opinion it is easier for women to be secretaries because they are generally well organized and have greater patience. But I would expect them to get the same pay as males. Because secretaries are underpaid because of their gender is strictly unfair. Secretaries do everything in order for their bosses to be on time and organized for their businesses so shouldn't they be the ones to thank (with a large income). I am not surprised that most secretaries are females, but I have seen more and more men become secretaries too, but not the same amount as there are women.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"62177868","dateCreated":"1367398157","smartDate":"May 1, 2013","userCreated":{"username":"mecarlil","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/mecarlil","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/62177868"},"dateDigested":1532140869,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Melanie's Response","description":"After reading the article, I was surprised to find that secretary positions are still the number one job for women. I didn't know that being a secretary was still the top job for women. I think that the job continues to still be the #1 job for women is because women have done this job for so long. The usually seem to "naturally" fit. I thought that because of the technological advances and more educational opportunities for women, the jobs women would be doing would be different. I was really surprised to learn about how much less women are paid compared to men. The stereotype about women in the workplace and not getting paid the same amount doesn't seem to have changed at all, which is really sad in this day and age.
