I understand that it is a cultural thing but it is time to move on from old traditions that can be so harmful and that violate women so much. I think FGM absolutely violates your right as a women. It may not be a law but in a society where you will be outcasted if you don't go through with it it basically is, and no women should have be forced to have FGM or anything in the same idea of genital mutilation. By cutting up and sewing up a women in this manner, i believe you do take away some of her femininity because you are change part of what makes her a women, and she should be able to enjoy sex with out it being painful and harmful. I think that it's crazy that women actually go through that procedure in order to be socially acceptable in some cultures. It is most certainly violating women's rights. Women should enjoy sex as much as men. Women already have to go through painful child birth, having to go through painful sex as well doesn't seem fair. I feel like this makes men more powerful, I feel like they are the ones who determine whether to have sex or not because obviously the women don't want to because it's painful. I understand that this is a cultural decision and every culture has their traditions but I don't think this is right. It's unfair that women have to give up their right to be free at such a young age when men don't and are allowed to enjoy it. Of course its hard to change things when they are related to culture but these surgeries are also very dangerous where people can and have died. I do not see the purpose of making an activity less enjoyable when its purpose is for sexual enjoyment and intimacy with their significant other. I am happy that it is not a law but I think it is wrong to "fix" something through surgery that does not need to be fixed. I think it does violate our rights of being a woman because this procedure basically says that women are not equal and cannot enjoy the same things as men.
