I mean, I know many mother's are extremely protective of their daughters and NO mother would ever want their child raped, but there are other ways to prevent that from happening. I believe that although this practice is in their knowledge as "acceptable", to me it is extremely degrading. I was surprised that through out the world there is so much pain that women go through. We change our bodies to suit the viewer. If women have to change, why not men? I think that we, as women, are sensitive enough about our outer appearance more than the men. In the natural world it is usually the complete opposite where men are the "peacocks" and the women get to chose their mate. The article was hard to read as I visualized the mutilation of a woman's breasts. I feel for the mothers as they would remember their own experience with the stones.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"42136644","dateCreated":"1315457780","smartDate":"Sep 7, 2011","userCreated":{"username":"aminuth","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/aminuth","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/42136644"},"dateDigested":1532140874,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Anela's Response","description":"This whole article was very disturbing and I was astonished to think that mother's consider themselves doing a favor to their girls by ironing their breasts. The whole outlook of the culture is also very troublesome. The fact that if a young girl gets raped it's her fault is ridiculous. I think that the Cameroon people are in desperate need of education regarding sex, rape and what it means to be a woman. Ironing young girls' breasts demeans their femininity and the girls shouldn't be responsible for the way men look at them. It's the men that are the predators and will probably go after young girls no matter how big their breasts are.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"42135104","dateCreated":"1315454772","smartDate":"Sep 7, 2011","userCreated":{"username":"Ericaa21","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/Ericaa21","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/42135104"},"dateDigested":1532140874,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Erica's Response","description":"I was so disturbed reading this article. For one thing it definantly makes me appreciate growing up in the United States where practices like this are unheard of. I am horrified that the mother's would do this to their young girls, but also by the fact that the rape of young girls is so prominant in their society that the mother's feel like that is the only way to protect their daughters. It so sad that the girls are put through all this pain because of their breasts growing, something they can't prevent. It's disgusting that the men in this society will look at young girls and engage them in a sexual way either with the girls concent of without. I think the mothers could find a different way to protet their daughters from this sexual contact at such a young age rather than burning off their breasts and scaring them for the rest of their lives.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"42129100","dateCreated":"1315445898","smartDate":"Sep 7, 2011","userCreated":{"username":"xoxomika","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/xoxomika","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/42129100"},"dateDigested":1532140874,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Mika's Response","description":"After learning about breast ironing, i found it very unfortunate and astonishing. It demeans them in a shameful way by forcing them to remove their breasts. Alternate ways of preventing rape and pregnancies is to enforce programs for African American women to teach them about contraception and to be more wary of rapists. Their mothers who put them through this are affecting their daughters not only physically but mentally. There are both tangible and non-tangable scars that will remain there for the rest of their life.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"42122534","dateCreated":"1315439620","smartDate":"Sep 7, 2011","userCreated":{"username":"tatortakahashi","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/tatortakahashi","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/42122534"},"dateDigested":1532140874,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Kasey's Response","description":"This article really disturbed me. Many girls still get raped even though their breasts were ironed. I feel that the mother daughter relationship will change after a mother would do that. It was appalling to read about how they burn the girls breasts at ages as young as 11, especially by their own mothers. It's a cruel and disgusting practice and it needs to be put to an end. Its alarming that the Cameroonian mothers think that burning their daughter's breasts are in their best interests. I agree with Bre and Malia that its completely unfair that the girls are forced to go through with ironing their breasts just to avoid possibly being raped or sexually abused. There are numerous other solutions the mothers in Cameroon can do to protect their daughters with out torturing them.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"42113434","dateCreated":"1315428628","smartDate":"Sep 7, 2011","userCreated":{"username":"miki10","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/miki10","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/42113434"},"dateDigested":1532140875,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Miki's Response ","description":"As I read this article, I could not believe the fact that mothers would do something so painful just to protect their daughters from being raped or having sex at a young age. I understand the view of the mothers, but I would never go to the extent of burning my daughter's breast. Just picturing this idea is hard to imagine and is plainly just disgusting. In my opinion, God made us the way we are and we shoud enjoy it, not change it. Breasts are a very important factor of a woman and I don't believe that should be taken away from her. The scary part was that about a quarter of all the girls in Africa have their breast ironed! I can't even imagine the pain each of the girls must have felt while the ironing. It is just unbearable. I hope that later mothers will find a different way to protect their daughters from sex and rape which does not cause them so much pain.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]}],"more":true},"comments":[]},"http":{"code":200,"status":"OK"},"redirectUrl":null,"javascript":null,"notices":{"warning":[],"error":[],"info":[],"success":[]}}
