It is an extremely pressing issue considering that it deals with tradition versus violence. In some ways, it is tradition and some girls choose to do it. I think in that case, it is acceptable because the girls choose to do it. If the girls are refusing do such a thing, it should be considered violence. It is not acceptable in many ways to go against a human's will to do something. It is sad and really brings the first world back to realization. It also brings feelings of gratitude because we need to be thankful people in America are not pressed with rights or issues like such.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"64297868","dateCreated":"1381478035","smartDate":"Oct 11, 2013","userCreated":{"username":"sabrina_gouveia","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/sabrina_gouveia","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/64297868"},"dateDigested":1532140904,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"FGM Response","description":"The topic of female gender mutilation is incredibly sad and heartbreaking. The fact that people are trying to cover up this what is called "brutal ritual" are oppressing women by this ritual. While some people would call it a cultural ritual, I am not so sure whether I believe that or not. The question of comparing this to circumcision is a very interesting approach that I would not have thought of. However, I do not believe that it is the same thing at all. Although circumcision can be considered brutal and tough, the way it is carried out has gotten better over the years. The boys are at a very young age, and this task is not considered as "brutal" as FGM. Furthermore, there are no long term effects like FGM has, where it has gotten so bad to the point where it has become a public and outrageously numbered problem. I do not believe that FGM has any valid justification so far, but if there is something that I am missing, I would love to understand it and listen to it.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"64297660","dateCreated":"1381475814","smartDate":"Oct 11, 2013","userCreated":{"username":"Courtkennedy","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/Courtkennedy","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/64297660"},"dateDigested":1532140904,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"FGM ","description":" When I read this article I was shocked, I had never heard of this before. This article opened my eyes to rituals that are performed in other cultures, but I don't agree with the fact that its a "cultural practice". I think that it is gender violence toward women. The fact that something this cruel is forced upon women to eliminate pleasure for women and girls is unfathomable. There is no where in this article that shows an equivalent procedure happening to boys in these same cultures. When comparing FGM to male circumcision, I view it as very different situations. FGM is done to reduce female pleasure and power, also causing permanent mutilation that can cause problems with female function. FGM can also lead to fatal health conditions. On the other hand, different cultures\/ religions perform circumcision as a religions practice. Also it is done to prevent bacteria from growing in that area, so essentially the removal of the skin is beneficial to boys health. Furthermore, I understand where people are coming from when they say it is a "cultural practice", but that severe of a life threatening ordeal should not be looked at lightly and I think viewing it as a"cultural practice" is doing just that. The help that these women and girls are receiving is wonderful and getting the word out about reducing the amount of women affected by this needs to improve greatly. Overall, this subject is very intricate and looking at something from a different cultural viewpoint may obscure our perception of the situation.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"64286808","dateCreated":"1381425651","smartDate":"Oct 10, 2013","userCreated":{"username":"Ranakaga","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/Ranakaga","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/64286808"},"dateDigested":1532140905,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"FGM","description":"When I read this article I was surprised and shocked. I understand that different cultures believe in this practice even though it is violent and morally cruel. I believe that this procedure is similar to male circumcision in the sense of the physicality of it all, however, I do see that for females the reasoning for the treatment is not as strong as it is for males. I feel that through male circumcision there is a strong support of it because of its history. I had never heard of FGM before this reading. Therefore, it leads me to have complete negative thoughts towards it. I did read from another source that it is a way of showing social acceptance, marriageability, as well as religious requirement. If a woman agrees to this I suppose that it is alright; however, if it is something that is forced, I do not see how this benefits anyone in any way. I do not by any means support especially the procedures done with poor hygiene. It is unacceptable, immoral, as well as a violent act to keep these women with open wounds especially in their home countries. In my opinion, this procedure is something that is painful as well as embarrassing. Since it is done to females at a young but memorable age, it is something that a girl is aware of. This could be not only physically challenging to deal with but also psychologically as well. I do not think that FGM will ever stop because there is too much history behind it. If there were a way to promote awareness of this type of event, there is a chance that life could improve for women who are in danger of being a victim of female genital mutilation.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"64277424","dateCreated":"1381391160","smartDate":"Oct 10, 2013","userCreated":{"username":"sakim4","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/sakim4","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/64277424"},"dateDigested":1532140905,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"response","description":"Although the dangers and risks that girls face with genital mutilation is shocking, we have to also consider the act being part of tradition passed down through the family\u2019s culture. I just don't understand why there is a such a ritual like this for females including the young ones. I knew about this female genital mutilation from some research about women in one of my history classes awhile ago but I really can't believe it's still happening and getting worse. I, also, can't imagine how painful this ritual or process is and how do the women even handle this torture. I really am disgusted with this and this needs to end and I don't get the concept of taking away women's way of pleasure. This culture must not be that great if the women that went through this grow up and decide to fight against it, obviously, the women know that this is very wrong and a serious serious problem.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"64272754","dateCreated":"1381363832","smartDate":"Oct 9, 2013","userCreated":{"username":"Sullz808","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/Sullz808","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/64272754"},"dateDigested":1532140905,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Reaction","description":"This article was both eye-opening and disgusting. Although it seems like this tradition is engrained in daily life, the process is brutal. I do not agree with what is done to these poor girls in Africa, some of whom are still children. I agree with the UK in that these practices should be banned and people should be prosecuted for doing such things. This idea is a completely new concept for me, especially being male and living in America. Honestly, I probably would have never known anything about this unless I read this article. This experience, although it was simply reading words for about ten minuets, is life changing. It reminds me of the story, "The Lottery," by Sherly Jackson where people are stoned to death simply for tradition. Brutal traditions, although they may seem like a way of life, should always be questioned and changed based on the day and age. This article has opened my eyes to the many problem going on it his huge world of ours.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"64267906","dateCreated":"1381344404","smartDate":"Oct 9, 2013","userCreated":{"username":"Kleein","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/Kleein","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/64267906"},"dateDigested":1532140905,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"FGM","description":"This is wrong!!! I consider this child abuse and an unlawful act. The clitoris was designed for girls by God and if they want to enjoy sexual pleasure, they should be free to do as they please. It is not the same as a circumsicion because the penis can function with out the tip and obviously the vagina can't. If it is causing so much problems and deaths for girls as young as the age of seven, it needs to be stopped. I agree with prosecution because this is an act of violence. I find it disturbing that people would even consider such act as part of a cultural ritual. The reason for such practice is even worse. I was surprised to find out that people from the UK are sent to outer countries to go through FGM. I would like to know who takes these girls from the UK to the outer countries. If more people were aware of FGM, I ink that there would be more campaigning against it. I that society also needs to do a better job at making people feel more comfortable to open up about incidents like FGM, instead of making them feel ashamed when it was not their fault. Then, we could increase the chances of finding the criminals, prevent additional FGM, and mentally and physically help all the victims heal.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]}],"more":true},"comments":[]},"http":{"code":200,"status":"OK"},"redirectUrl":null,"javascript":null,"notices":{"warning":[],"error":[],"info":[],"success":[]}}
