It poses an interesting and difficult question on who is to blame and how much punishment should be given. Although high school students should know the difference between sex and rape it is sad that we are under educated. Rape is a very touchy subject but education could possibly end or at least cut down the amount of rape in the US. I feel the two boys should be punished for their actions because they did break the law and no one should be able to defy the rules set by our government especially a law that helps protect young woman and their bodies.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"61766468","dateCreated":"1364504234","smartDate":"Mar 28, 2013","userCreated":{"username":"jrsele","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/jrsele","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/61766468"},"dateDigested":1532140917,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"JR's Response","description":"I am not shocked that the three boys are being punished. Statutory rape falls under the category of sexual assault, and if the girls felt violated then there should be a consequence. This shows the lack of sexual education high school students receive. I feel that the boys deserve a good amount of sympathy because they did not know better, but they should have a good conscience in the case. I feel that the school should allow the students to protests; however, the school should not support it. I do feel that part of the blame goes to the young girls as well.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"61766424","dateCreated":"1364503905","smartDate":"Mar 28, 2013","userCreated":{"username":"dapascua","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/dapascua","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/61766424"},"dateDigested":1532140917,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"kama's response","description":"Reading this article, I am on the fence on the extremenous of this case. No one was forcing power upon each other, and the reason why this is considered rape is because of the age differences. I feel it is kind of weird for them to interact in such a way, considering their ages. In a way I believe that they are making this case more serious then it should be, but both sides where wrong in this case. The boys and the girls should have known better.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"61765676","dateCreated":"1364495738","smartDate":"Mar 28, 2013","userCreated":{"username":"Naomiko","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/Naomiko","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/61765676"},"dateDigested":1532140917,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Naomi's response","description":"This was just what I was talking about in class yesterday. The whole statutory rape subject is iffy. These students are supporting the boys which goes to show that they are uneducated. They are ignorant. I think the school should condemn the rallying in school, but if students want to express their feelings online, so be it. I saw comments for and against the two football players. Gender roles come to play in this rallying because it is the 13 year old girls faults for going with the older boys. Shouldnt the boys have known better? After all they are legal adults and a year from adulthood. I think the boys are to blame because 1) they are older, they should know better 2) the girls were 13 for Christ sake, thats like 7th grade!!! I wouldnt know what to do if one of my friends went through it. I blame both parties but mainly the boys for taking advantage. The girls should have known better than to hang out with the senior football boys, what do you expect? The question is: what do you expect?! I could have seen this from a mile away, but it depends on their knowledge, did these girls even have any idea what sex is????","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"61764908","dateCreated":"1364492138","smartDate":"Mar 28, 2013","userCreated":{"username":"andrewoki","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/andrewoki","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/61764908"},"dateDigested":1532140917,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Andrew's Response","description":"After reading about the Torrington High School students rallying for their friends who were charged with rape, I had mixed emotions. I feel for the boys because they are being charged with a very cloudy crime in statutory rape. It is cloudy because the law changes depending on the state and the statutory age is different ranging from as low as 12 years old to as old as 21. It is hard because the boys were probably unaware and uneducated about the statutory laws of the state. However, the boys should not really be having sexual intercourse with girls who are barely teenagers because it is inappropriate. But, the law is very controversial because it determines what age girls are able to clearly make their own decisions. What if the statutory age was 18 and the girls were 17? Then technically it would be illegal, but I think the girls are capable of deciding whether or not to have sex.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"61764172","dateCreated":"1364488461","smartDate":"Mar 28, 2013","userCreated":{"username":"keoshita","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/keoshita","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/61764172"},"dateDigested":1532140917,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Kelis' response","description":"I think that these students can be compared to the Steubenville trial because the are a unaware and not educated on these different kinds of rapes, which only shows how schools should be teaching and talking about rape and how serious of a crime it is. On one hand, I feel that they should not receive such harsh punishment because the girl may have consented and they are simply being punished due to her age, which in some sense seems unfair. On the other hand, what they did was inappropriate and irresponsible and they should have known better then to become involved with someone of such a young age. Like rape, Statutory rape is certainly a controversial and touchy subject, however, I do feel it is something that needs to be addressed. However, if the minor willingly and openly consented, I do think that the offense is far less severe than violent and unwanted rape.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"61760738","dateCreated":"1364457080","smartDate":"Mar 28, 2013","userCreated":{"username":"amkornit","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/amkornit","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/61760738"},"dateDigested":1532140917,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Amanda's Response","description":"When I read this article I was shocked, not just because of what happened but because the headline read "Torrington High School Students Rally for Rape defendant, and Blame Victims." I lived just the couple of towns over from Torrington, CT just two years ago and actually know people from that area. I think the students are trying to defend the defendants because they are their friends and because many don't see statutory rape as rape many times because it can just be based on age; even though in my opinion it most definitely can be just as bad, and should not be taken lightly. I think the school should condemn the rallying, sure they are just trying to support their friends but it makes them and the school by allowing it, look like they don't completely condemn rape of any sort. This article in someways shows how people still degrade women and that being raped is their fault because of how they act, dress, and who they hangout with, but that doesn't make what happened to them their fault. Do I think this was mostly the boys fault yes, they chose to have sex with two thirteen year old girls when I'm sure they knew it wasn't legal and if anyone found out they could get in a lot of trouble. However, I don think the victims could have avoided the situation maybe by not hanging out with those people who were much older than them and who might try to influence them in a negative way. If I was a friend of one of the victims, I would be furious that people were blaming her for what happened, and for threatening her for telling what happened and "ruining the boys life" she didn't ruin their lives they did it to themselves. If I was a friend of one of the defendants, I don't know as though I could support them and say they did nothing wrong, because clearly they did, and how can you teach people that statutory rape and any kind of rape it wrong if there aren't consequences.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"61760664","dateCreated":"1364453050","smartDate":"Mar 27, 2013","userCreated":{"username":"aspoziembo","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/aspoziembo","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/61760664"},"dateDigested":1532140917,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Ashlei's Response","description":"This article was really different compared to the Steubenville rape case articles. It seems as if the boys had more public support from their peers through media such as Instagram and Twitter. I think that the other students are supporting the boys because the girls probably consented to having sex with them. It may have been only because of the state\u2019s law that the girls came forward. I think that both the victims and the boys are at fault because they were not educated in the laws that pertain to rape. I do believe, without a doubt, that those two boys are guilty. The law plainly says that the girls can't consent to having sex since they are three years older. Yes, the girls may have consented, but it's what the law says, not what anyone else says. It's also interesting because here in Hawaii, the age of consent is 14 ( I think) but the guy can't be 3 years older than them. I believe that the states should get rid of these stupid laws and make one law saying how old you must be to have sex - without any "catches." I do feel bad for the boys, but they should let their brains think instead of their testosterone taking over.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]}],"more":true},"comments":[]},"http":{"code":200,"status":"OK"},"redirectUrl":null,"javascript":null,"notices":{"warning":[],"error":[],"info":[],"success":[]}}
