A school should never tell a child especially a six grader that they should have plastic surgery to keep kids from teasing them. That is not the schools job. It is their job to teach to teach kids that bullying anyone for any reason is wrong. It's not the child who is being bullied's job to change so they stop being bullied. We should teach kids to be comfortable in their own skin and to not bully those who are different. I think schools should definitely have programs to teach about bullying.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"62106942","dateCreated":"1367004914","smartDate":"Apr 26, 2013","userCreated":{"username":"Naomiko","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/Naomiko","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/62106942"},"dateDigested":1532141324,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Naomi's Response","description":"No, she should not get a breast reduction surgery! Especially if the school suggests that to stop the bullying. It is like they are saying it is her fault she has big breasts. That is unfair to the victim. Usually 6th graders are only beginning to develop into adults but this girl was ahead of them. the school should understand this and deal with the bullies, not make the victim change.
\nthei suggestion sends a message that it is okay for bullies to bully when the victim is 'flawed'. We dont need people pointing out our physical flaws, but really she has no flaws at all. This makes the victim more insecure as well as think something is actually wrong with her. They should have a class course on how the body develops so there is no teasing and immaturity. The school should re-evaluate their morals because what they suggested is rude and immature.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"62095102","dateCreated":"1366965710","smartDate":"Apr 26, 2013","userCreated":{"username":"krpoei","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/krpoei","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/62095102"},"dateDigested":1532141324,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Kristen's Post","description":"There is no reason why the school should suggest such a thing. Gabrielle obviously could not help how her body develops and control the size of her breasts. It is absurd to hear that students bully her for the size of her breasts. She is too young to get a breast reduction; therefore, she needs to embrace with what she has and needs to block what others perceive about her.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"62087406","dateCreated":"1366924116","smartDate":"Apr 25, 2013","userCreated":{"username":"cawhang","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/cawhang","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/62087406"},"dateDigested":1532141325,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Caitlyn's response ","description":"After reading this article I was shocked that a school would suggest such a thing. Not only is it out of place and should never be asked off you g girl but in the end it's her choice. To say that it would prevent further bullying and making the firm ge bad about herself it breaks the morals and values that a school should have. By making this girl feel bad about her own body it makes her feel as if something is wrong with her body. this is the way that she was born so this is the way she should stay. I'm a firm believer in this statement and I don't think anyone especially authority figures at school should have a say in making her do otherwise. I laughed because this is ridiculous that kids are so immature that they would openly tease a girl about her body. What is even more ridiculous is that the school would suggest to change her body instead of addressing those who are teasing. There are many other solutions to the situation such as trying to prevent the bullying in the first place by talking to the kids who were doing the bullying. I feel like bullying is inevitable but a solution that is so brutal such as surgery can have much more psychological damage. I couldn't believe the statistics on plastic surgery on young teens. I firmly believe that Gabrielle should not get the plastic surgery. No one should have to change their body to "fit in". It is not okay for the school to be suggesting this to her in the first place. They are targeting the wrong part of the bullying problem. The school should be talking to the people who are bullying and not the victims. This conveys the message that it's the victims fault and they should succumb to the bullies. I think that schools need to educate students about the emotional dangers of bullying. I feel like young teens don't even realize they are bullying someone sometimes. They may make remarks that aren't intended to hurt, but sarcastic and joking remarks can really offend someone.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"62072726","dateCreated":"1366882423","smartDate":"Apr 25, 2013","userCreated":{"username":"mecarlil","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/mecarlil","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/62072726"},"dateDigested":1532141325,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Melanie's Response","description":"I was appalled to read about the entire situation. I thought it was completely ridiculous and out-of-place for the woman working for the school system to suggest surgery. At such an impressionable age, middle school students should be taught to respect each other and understand that everyone's bodies are changing. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the young girl and she should not be changing anything about her body. Rather than finding a solution by altering the appearance of the young victim, the school board should go try to fix the problem by preventing bullying in the first place. Education and awareness would probably help alter the mentalities of these young middle schoolers, both bullies and victims.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]}],"more":true},"comments":[]},"http":{"code":200,"status":"OK"},"redirectUrl":null,"javascript":null,"notices":{"warning":[],"error":[],"info":[],"success":[]}}
