I have always known Hawaii has had a high rate of teen pregnancies but I wouldn't think the abortion rate would be that high because so many high-school girls have their babies. When the topic of abortion comes up I try to avoid it. My feelings about this topic are so mixed. If I knew someone that was getting an abortion I would feel bad for the baby but if I put myself in their shoes I would probably do the same thing. Under certain circumstances I feel abortions are acceptable but some aren't. The article stated that teen pregnancies are cause by lack of education. I disagree. I feel pregnancies are cause mostly by carelessness, the heat of the moment, and alcohol. Many girls feel it won't happen to them therefore they don't bother using contraceptives. Being in the heat of the moment, its hard to say no. After drinking, its hard to determine what's right and wrong and bad decisions are made.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"43344778","dateCreated":"1317276637","smartDate":"Sep 28, 2011","userCreated":{"username":"tatortakahashi","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/tatortakahashi","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/43344778"},"dateDigested":1532141279,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Kasey's Response","description":"After reading this article, i was flabbergasted to read that we are ranked higher than the national average for teen abortions. Abortion is a very hard topic for me to talk about because i am torn between two thoughts. I feel that is inhumane to have an abortion because you are indeed ending a child's life. Some people can even view it as murder. However the other thought i have is that it is sometimes the smart thing to do. having a baby at such a young age can ruin\/change your life completely. Most teens aren't ready to have a child and can barely take care of themselves. It is good to see that there are many programs set up to help teens and plan a parenthood. Also i like how Hawaii is trying to help teens and accommodate them with education and supplies for a safe abortion. However, this led me to think that because we are making it so easy to have an abortion, many teens feel that it isn't a big deal to have a baby. By Hawaii making it easy for teens to have an abortion they might be fueling the flame for more teen pregnancies. Also finding out that sexually active teens don't use a condom is a shame. This is the number 1 reason why teens are becoming pregnant.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"43341230","dateCreated":"1317266220","smartDate":"Sep 28, 2011","userCreated":{"username":"Kekuroda","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/Kekuroda","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/43341230"},"dateDigested":1532141279,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Kelsey's Response","description":"I was also shocked to learn that Hawaii's rating for unexpected teen pregnancies is so high compared to other countries. I think that growing up in Hawaii, we're almost used to seeing young women becoming single mothers and seeing girls unintentionally getting pregnant in high school or college, but we don't realize that this isn't so common on the mainland. I definitely agree that the lack of sex education in our schools is one of the problems. Becoming pregnant, especially if it is not intended and as a minor, is very serious. In Hawaii, were lucky to have such easy access to clinics, like Planned Parenthood, where safe abortion services are offered. However, this may be because the unexpected pregnancy rate in Hawaii is so high. Everyone has their own opinions and beliefs, and it's up to the individual to decide if an abortion is morally right for them. I think the state can definitely broaden the sex education system and inform and enforce to teens how dangerous unprotected sex is and what the consequences are. Also, the rate of unexpected pregnancies could be reduced if contraceptives were easier to access to teens.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"43326014","dateCreated":"1317246609","smartDate":"Sep 28, 2011","userCreated":{"username":"catchu909","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/catchu909","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/pic\/1317882302\/catchu909-lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/43326014"},"dateDigested":1532141279,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Catherine's Post","description":"After reading this article, I found it surprising that Hawaii has the highest number of abortions in the nation because to me, it always seemed like everyone surrounding me have numerous family members on the island and most of my classmates all have brothers and sisters. It is rare to find an individual who is an only child. Personally, I am not against abortion because I think that every woman has their own individual rights to do what they want with their body. I've read many articles on this in the past and I agree with science when it comes to reproduction. When a woman is pregnant, a human being is not formed yet. An indication of pregnancy is just a combination of the sperm and egg. So, with this in mind, I think that if the fetus is not developing in the uterus, there is nothing wrong with abortion bcause by one's moral standards, no human being is being killed in the process. In the article, it mentioned that there are clinics in Hawaii that allow girl as young as 14 to get abortions without the consent of parents. I think that the clinics are both understanding about the fear girls have when they have an unintended pregnancy but at the same time, it also tells the girls that "It's Okay to get pregnant because there is always a solution." In a way, the availibility of the clinics encourage premature sex. At the end of the article, it said that the abortion opponents are looking to cut Plan Parenthood funding which could potentially lead to higher abortion rates. I completely agree because people who go to Plan Parenthood are the ones who are more mindful of their actions and they are more cautious of what they are doing. Yes, birth control does regulate the menstrual cycles and is 99% sure that it can prevent unwanted pregnancies, but there is still that 1% chance that both the girl and the boy have to deal with when having sexual intercourse. I think that boys need to realize that they have to be respectful to the girl and they should use a condom or another contraceptive device for both safety and health issues. If there is no other contraceptive, both people should weigh their pros and cons. It might be fun now, but what about the future? If couples don't pay attention to details like this, it could easily lead to an unwanted pregnancy. Another thing guys should think about is if they are willing and able to support the girl and their baby if an accident does happen. I feel like Hawaii as a whole is more understanding than other places in the United States but not everyone is accepting and liberal. I think the reason why many girls get abortions is because they don't want to face society and they feel the only way to avoid being looked down upon is to get an abortion.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"43285510","dateCreated":"1317199966","smartDate":"Sep 28, 2011","userCreated":{"username":"nikaidoL","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/nikaidoL","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/43285510"},"dateDigested":1532141280,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Lauren's response","description":"I was surprised to read that Hawaii is 17th in the nation for teenage pregnancies and 7th in the nation for abortions. Many of my close friends have had an abortion or a baby at the age of 14. It was no surprise to find out that Hawaii was nationally ranked because in the place I live alone, at least 1 out of 5 girls are pregnant, is going to give birth, is trying to get pregnant, or has had an abortion. Off the top of my head, I can give you 20 names of girls that are around 17 to 19 years old and has had a child or is pregnant. It really is disappointing because as a person looking from the outside in, all you can think about is how their lives could have been if that couple had waited to have a child. And abortion is really a sad thing, depending on how you look at it. I can tell you from personal experience that the feeling isnt pleasant. This article is proof that Hawaii needs to do something so teenagers dont cut their life short.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"43284742","dateCreated":"1317196639","smartDate":"Sep 28, 2011","userCreated":{"username":"xoxomika","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/xoxomika","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/43284742"},"dateDigested":1532141280,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Mika's Response","description":"As heartless as this seems, abortions to me are okay considering that poverty is a common outcome of teen pregnancies. If teens are not ready to take on motherhood i don't see how it is wrong to abort an unexpected baby that might possibly ruin a teenager's chance of a steady job, good grades, and a normal lifestyle. It is partially their fault for having sex when they are not aware of the consequences such as STDs and pregnancies. It is on the other hand partially not their fault for the absence of proper guidance and teachings about sexual education. To educate teens on sex, i suggest schools require sexual education to be taught to students which will hopefully lower the percentage of abortions. They will take precaution because of their new understandings of the consequences being put at risk. Yes, girls who are 14 should be allowed to get an abortion if needed. I don't feel that because we live in Hawaii, people are more accepting. Honestly, it depends on your community, school, and group of friends to determine weather or not it is "accepting" because every community's view on social acceptance is different.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"43284440","dateCreated":"1317195182","smartDate":"Sep 28, 2011","userCreated":{"username":"Careesebr","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/Careesebr","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/43284440"},"dateDigested":1532141280,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Careese's Response","description":"I am not sure how I feel about this article. I have super mixed feelings about abortion thats why. To be honest, I was not super surprised by the statistics of unexpected pregnancies, but I was maybe a little shocked for the number of abortions. As much as I think abortions are not morally correct, I feel like if I was a pregnant teen at the age of 16 or 17, I would not even think about having my baby because I know that I wouldn\u2019t be able to take care of a baby at that age. I think it is important for people to remember that abortion is not always extremely wrong because everyone\u2019s situation is different. Teen couples who choose to have an abortion because they know that they cannot handle the huge responsibility of taking care of a baby make the right decision because they are not only thinking about themselves, but the future of the baby as well. When I first started reading this article, the first thing could think of for the reasoning behind the statistics was that Hawaii is different from everywhere else, which corresponds directly with Reardon\u2019s quote. My thinking is that the statistics for the number of abortions is so high because it is in correlation with the number of unintended pregnancies. Maybe teens in Hawaii are smart about unintended pregnancies because they choose to have an abortion, which may save the child from an unhealthy family. I think abortion is a very controversial topic and in the future it will never be settled. Abortions can be prevented, though, if unintended pregnancies are prevented as well. I do not think that more sex education is needed for teenagers because every teen knows the consequence of unprotected sex. What I do think needs to be emphasized is the responsibility of having a child as a teen. I feel like this would be more effective in preventing unprotected sex.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"43284228","dateCreated":"1317193622","smartDate":"Sep 28, 2011","userCreated":{"username":"Ericaa21","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/Ericaa21","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/43284228"},"dateDigested":1532141280,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Erica 's responce","description":"Before reading this article I had no idea that Hawaii was rated to high nationally for teen pregnancies and abortion. I personally do not agree with abortion and think that if the girl was responsible enough to make the decision to have sex, she needs to be responsible enough to deal with the outcomes. Most girls and boys don't think about the consiquence of having a child when they have sex which i feel is one of the main causes to this. Although we do get taught sex education in school, we are most of the time just told over and over again not to do it but in reality most will at some point during high school. I think that schools need to edjucate and provide teenagers with more information on prevention. Just as Anela said though I do not think that lack of edjucation is the only problem, I also think that kids are very careless now a days because an abortion, especially in Hawaii is so easy to have.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"43283968","dateCreated":"1317192521","smartDate":"Sep 27, 2011","userCreated":{"username":"cakagawa","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/cakagawa","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/43283968"},"dateDigested":1532141280,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Cara's Response","description":"I was surprised about our state's rates for unplanned teen pregnancies and abortions. I hope that we can solve this problem soon. I think that we should educate teens more. In Iolani we are taught about sex education in 7th grade which would be equivalent to a 13 year old. I believe that teaching about sex education is important before the cause, but i also think that we should teach sex education when we are older, around sophmore or junior year. I think this is the most important time to target teens because a lot of teens would become sexually active around this time and in college. We should teach more about contraceptives because sometimes the girls are scared to tell someone that they are having sex. I think that this could solve a lot of the issues by using education. I was sad to hear about the cutting costs of Planned Parenthood. This program has helped a lot of people and it is a "safe house" for teens and couples who are not ready for a child. I was introduced to the "I have sex" video's around youtube. They had young men and women standing up for Planned Parenthood and fought to keep Planned Parenthood alive. I think that although abortion isn't the best solution to a problem, it is up to the woman who is going to have the child. If she wants to keep the baby she can but it is up to her because she is the one who will go through the pregnancy and financial affairs after the baby is born. Overall, this article has opened my eyes to this problem in our community.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]}],"more":true},"comments":[]},"http":{"code":200,"status":"OK"},"redirectUrl":null,"javascript":null,"notices":{"warning":[],"error":[],"info":[],"success":[]}}
