Absract: This article targetted female hollywood stars. the media is critisizing women that have hairy legs and under arms. the article uses stars such as comedian Mo'Nique and actress Julia Roberts. although the media, unfortunately, degraded these women, they did not conform and shave. they had said that unshaven body parts should not be a problem. women should have a say in it and should not be look down upon. another female star comments that the critism not only affects the stars but also teens all over the world. females should not have to worry about shaving or being hairy. overall this article wrote about an interesting and on a different topic. it sure got me thinking about how we judge and look at one another.
Kelsey: I thought this article showed that some women just do not care about what others think and say about them, and how they look. I thought that it was good that women like Mo'nique were willing to stand up to fans and paparazzi for what they want; it was also good to see that these various women did what they wanted, and were some how allowing themselves to be free. Before, I never really thought that a simple task like having to shave could take away someones freedom; but after reading this article, I realized that one of the main reasons women shave is so that their bodies are appealing to the eyes of others. Reading this article was a good motivator for me, and it reminded me that I can do what ever I want despite what others have to say...but not shaving, I thought was kind of disgusting, and being hairy just does not appeal to me.
Mariah: i thought this article to be much different from the others we have read. this artcle mainly focuses on females, the females that walk the red carpet. what an interesting topic to write about? women and their hair. ever since when was it a problem for women to have hairy legs or under arms. i feel that the media is only looking for another reason to critisize hollywood stars. stars like Mo'nique are proud of their hairyness. it motivates teens to be themselves. shaving should not be a social problem, it is normal for males why can't it be alright for females? for me being hairy is not appealing BUT females should not be degraded for their hair.
Noelle: I thought this article was empowering towards women because it shows how other women are breaking the social norms. Celebrities who are exposed more to the public eye and criticism are embracing their hair everywhere and bravely displaying their hairy selves at award shows and functions. In America shaving is simply what women do; the less hair on the legs, armpits, and face, the better. Celebrities like Monique are proud and flaunting their hairy legs and they expose them with short dresses or not-so-discreet dress lifts. Julia Roberts even did not shave her armpits for one of her movie premieres and honestly I think it was a little disturbing. Not only celebrities, but average everyday women are taking a stand against shaving as well. One professor admits that her students find her excess of hair distracting, but she does not care. Although women claim they are not shaving simply to make a statement, I think they are sending a quite strong message to men and women alike. It is wonderful that women are becoming empowered by the fact that they no longer have to fit the social mold of a hairless beauty but personally I still think women should shave (at least their armpits). People, as well as myself, are not used to seeing hairy women and cringe at the sight of a woman with a bush under her arm but maybe all of this non-shaving will eventually catch on. In the mean time though, I am still totally pro shaving.
DISCUSSION QUESTIONS:
1. WHAT DID YOU THINK ABOUT THE ARTICLE?
2. WOULD YOU HAVE CONSIDERED SHAVING TO BE A TASK THAT TAKES AWAY FROM YOUR FREEDOM?
3. DO YOU THINK WOMEN HAVE / NEED TO SHAVE?
4. DO YOU LIKE TO SHAVE? (GIRLS, & BOYS IF YOU DO AS WELL.)
5. WHY DO YOU SHAVE? (GILS, & BOYS IF YOU DO AS WELL.)
6. DO YOU THINK IT'S WEIRD FOR MEN TO SHAVE THEIR LEGS, ETC.?
