I am most definitely surprised by Lady Gaga's decision to become celibate. After singing to my friends that "I wanna take a ride on [their] disco stick[s]", it's shocking that the artist of such a song would choose a lifestyle the exact opposite. It's disheartening to realize that "in order to be masculine, one must be hypersexual. In order to be feminine, one must be an opposing, nonsexual entity". This is also true for other societies, not just America. The men are the ones who are supposed to be the sex-driven species while the women must save themselves till they're married. Therefore, the women are more pressed into becoming celibate so that they can maintain their purity whereas the men don't give a thought to such a decision. It's a sad world we live in.

I was surprised when I heard about Lady Gaga and the announcement on her celibacy. Her songs, most notably LoveGame, contains lyrics with several sexual references and I always thought that it was because she, like many others, has had sexual desires and relations. I respect her open decision to be celibate, especially because in today's society, we are surrounded and exposed to many songs with sexual references. Lady Gaga's announcement tells her fans that sex isn't everything, even if you are a celebrity. She has become a sort of role model because she "isn't afraid to occupy the middle ground; but more importantly, teenagers need a figure that isn't defined by their sexuality." I was also interested in reading the other half of the article, which talks about the differences between men and women in terms of purity. It was disappointing to read about how people look down more on women who are no longer a virgin in comparison to men who are no longer a virgin.
