This article is about the effect of the recession on men jobs. Because of the recent recession, the Bureau of Labor Statistics has notice a vast decrease in the amount of job-holding men. Women have begun to outnumber the men in the workforce, a first in history. Although the women are beginning to hold more jobs than men, they still work less hours, are paid less, and hold more part-time jobs. The only growing economies are health care, education, and government, which traditionally hire females. However, an economist of the University of Chicago predicts the unemployment of the men isn't going to last much longer, now that new jobs will soon be created. He predicts the number of women to increase, then decrease to accommodate the men.
Why do you think companies would rather hire women than men during this time?
Do you think women should begin getting higher pay now that they have taken over the workforce?
Do you think industries/economies will turn from the traditional female hire to relieve the growing
number of unemployed men?
What do you think will be the "new" jobs and why will the number of men in the workforce surpass the
number of women workers? ("Mulligan expects the portion of jobs held by women to peak slightly
above 50% this year, then drop below half when the economy recovers and more men find work.")
