"Can a Boy Wear a Skirt to School" was an article that I came across while looking for another article for my dad in the New York Times. (Sorry that it is really long, but) this article caught my eye because it mentions about teens who dress against the "norms" of society. It is about how there has been "a growing number of teenagers have been dressing to articulate — or confound — gender identity and sexual orientation." Two weeks ago, a senior boy was sent home because his wig violated the boy’s hair portion of the dress code. It says that school officials want to be able to discipline students whose wardrobe express their sexual orientation, but what the schools must realize is that they must also consider antidiscrimination polices.

1. Do you think that schools should make rules about “gender bending” for their dress code?
2. Should schools prohibit or discipline kids from dressing like the opposite sex?
3. Do you think our generation is more open-minded about this issue?
4. Do you think kids today are less bound by rules about what boys should wear and what girls should wear?
5. Do you think that there are students at ‘Iolani who are afraid to dress the way that they want, and therefore dress “just like everyone else?”
