This article discusses sexual harassment towards women in public. It begins by explaining that
men command women in public to do things they do not want to do. It further moves on to
discuss verbal harassment women endure in the subways of merely walking on the street. For
example, the survey announces that 80-98 percent of women reported to have been aggressively
sexually harassed. Lastly, there are specific examples to illustrate extreme cases of the sexual
harassment that have gone wrong. These cases of sexism and assault towards women illustrate
the problems that are hidden in society today.
Sabrina: I was very surprised about the examples of extreme cases of sexual harassment that
went wrong. I was also very surprised that it was not publicized more. Furthermore, women
are being harmed in public environments which is scary because there is limited to do to stop it.
By educating the public, we can try to stop the sexism problems and protect women. I could not
believe that men would hurt other women when they responded negatively to the verbal abuse.
Women need to help to stand up for themselves. By sticking together and standing up for each
other will be able to help women stay safe. In order for women to be protected, men also need to
realize that sexism is not okay.
Courtney's Reaction: I first read this article when Sabrina showed it to me when we were
looking up topics for our CE. The topic of sexual harassment toward women in public is a
very big problem in our societies. Although I did know that sexual harassment was an issue, I
didn't realize how big of a problem it was. This article stated that 80-98% of women experience
persistent street harassment. The fact that they can't voice their opinions to the harasser, in most
cases, or they will be physically abused is upsetting. What I took away from this article is that
women aren't in control of themselves. Their actions and behavior are dictated by the reactions
of men. An example for this is that women, no matter how they dress are victims to sexual
harassment. This is giving women the idea that you can't be confident in public with who you
are. I feel that we should figure out a way to reduce sexual harassment against women in public
because women should have the ability to act, dress and state their opinions without any fear of
being attacked by men.
