Any sex scandle is always a disturbing act of violence, but when it is inflicted on a girl of only twelve years, it makes it even worse. Recently, a student at Kamehameha Schools was reported to have been repeatedly sexually assaulted by two of her classmates, 13 year old boys, in the dormitories three days in a row. She had reported the assault to authority figures with in the school after the third assault, but the police were not contacted. As Ann Botticelli said, We begin an immediate investigation of the allegation, and as soon as we have reason to believe a serious incident occurred we notify the students’ parents,”. They also believed that this was a family issue and was to be dealt with by the family. But by law, it is the responsibility of the school to report any type of sexual assault to the official authority immediately. In the end, it was her parents who contacted the police. It was also reported that the attorney, Seitz, had also once defended five other students for inappropriate videotaping on campus.
I find this event quite appalling mostly because of where it takes place, and what was not done in response. For children, their school is a place they rely on for safety, along with the teachers and school officials. When Kamehameha Schools did not take action, they displayed a lack of concern for their children. It also really made me wonder about the supervision of the campus and dormitories.
Why do you think Kamehameha schools went against the state law in this situation, do you believe embarrassment had a main role in their decision?
Why did the girl only tell about the act of violence after the third time she was assaulted? Does this same reason keep other women and girls from telling about sexual assault?
Do you think that the lack supervision of the children, especially at Kamehameha but also other boarding schools, is the reason for sexual assault?
Is sexual assault a matter of just the family or family and school?
