Captain D. Michael Abrashoff is the former commander of the USS Benfold. When he first became the commander of the Benfold it was the worst ship in the navy. It had the worst statistics in test runs and its crew was dissatisfied. As the crew members cheered on their former captain's departure, he said to Abrashoff, "It's your ship." Despite this seemingly bleak situation, Captain Abrashoff was determined to make his ship the best in the navy. He began by creating very personal relationships with every single member of his crew, even eating with them in their quarters. They gained a respect for him and worked harder to improve their ship. The captain addressed many problems his crew faced and he listened to their advice. Soon, his ship was the best in the navy, with record-breaking scores in tests and a near perfect percentage of crew members who returned the following year. Captain Abrashoff was an incredible leader and I am fortunate to have read his book, It's Your Ship. He is an exemplary veteran.
