Harmful to Women MTV has various shows which portray women in a negative way. The women in the shows tend to be “sluttish” and are a negative influence on the younger generation. This station is not intended for children to watch, but rather is for the mature teens who can distinguish between right and wrong. MTV’s portrayal of women as unwise, spoiled, and slutty causes younger girls to believe they should act and be treated this way. The women in Jersey Shore are seen as party animals that can’t handle alcohol. On this show, the women and men go out partying almost every night. Snooki, one of the main characters, is known for her “poof” and wears short skirts and tight shirts emphasizing various parts of her body. After this show became well-watched series, many younger girls are walking around with the “poof” and short, tight clothes. They think it is stylish and is the perfect look. Also on various nights, Snooki and the other girls are so drunk they don’t even remember what happened the night before. They wake up every morning with a different man in their beds. MTV tries to portray women in a way that it will attract TV watchers, but it isn’t the correct way to teach younger generations to act. Another show I watched was Teen Mom. This show is very negative toward women because they are pregnant and have a baby when they are supposed to be going to high school. Also on this show many of the babies seem like mistakes, and the parents didn’t really want the child. One example is Jenelle, a teen mother who liked to party, but now she has to set her priorities straight to raise her son. Her son named Jace has no dad because he left, and Jenelle must raise the baby on her own. It is very hard for Jenelle because she has conflict with her mom and her mom forces her to give her custody of the baby. Jenelle signs the baby over to her mom thinking it will be better for her and the baby, but it only makes things tougher as she is caught fighting with her mom just to see her own son. Every time Jenelle goes to see Jace, her and her mother get in an argument and she always leaves the house upset. Jenelle gets it hard from her mother because of this baby and can’t runaway from it like the baby’s dad did. She is stuck with it and must deal with the problems making her look foolish. This shows that women are unwise in their decisions. The man doesn’t get any put down because he got a girl pregnant; the girl receives all the insult and negative effects of having the baby. Like Jenelle, the female is forced to care for the baby while the father runs away. MTV’s My Super Sweet 16 illustrates girls to be spoiled brats. I watched various episodes of this show and every show tends to visualize these girls in the same way. All the girls on this show are spoiled and get whatever they want. Many of these girls don’t even have their license yet, but they receive a brand new car for their birthday. A few weeks before their party, their parents take them to the car dealership to choose out the car they want. If they don’t get the car they want they will throw a fit until they get what they want. Also there is a lot of arguing that goes on between the parents and the child. The parents usually give in and their child gets whatever they want. This show is mostly a portrayal of girls because very few guys have sweet sixteens. Girls on this show are spoiled brats, and viewers of this show become the same way. They argue with their parents and throw fits until they get what they want. MTV has a negative effect on younger generations and shouldn’t be watched by immature children. This show should only be watched by mature young adults who are able to differentiate between right and wrong. Personally I see this show affecting the public.
